After spending a few days in the hospital, Matteo decided to check himself out early.
The day after Evelyn left, he had scheduled a divorce with Rebecca. Now that the 30-day cooling-off period had passed, he needed to finalize it as soon as possible.
That day, Rebecca sobbed, but in the end, she didn't say much.
She simply followed him obediently to process the divorce paperwork, her tear-filled eyes staring at him as she told him to be happy.
He had been frustrated with her, but seeing her so understanding at that moment, he couldn't bring himself to blame her. He even agreed not to publicly announce their divorce for the time being.
Matteo drove to Rebecca's house.
Just as he reached the front door and was about to walk in, voices from inside made him pause.
"That bitch Evelyn should've just killed herself when she saw those messages! Disappearing for a whole month? Why the hell is Matteo still not over her? What the hell is so great about that slut anyway?
"Whatever, it doesn't matter. I've been pregnant for three months already, and the baby is stable now. As soon as I tell the Gallagher family, Matteo can throw as big of a tantrum as he wants. He still won't be able to divorce me.
"Why are you jealous? You know I've only ever loved you. Yeah, this baby is his, but the next one will be yours, okay?"
Rebecca's words stabbed into Matteo's heart like daggers, one after another, ruthless and unforgiving.
His breathing grew heavier, his vision tinged with red.
With a loud bang, the door slammed open.
Rebecca instinctively ended the call. Her face turned pale as she looked toward the entrance, and she forced a smile despite her obvious panic.
"Matty, aren't you still recovering? Why are you out of the hospital already?"
"Who were you talking to?" His voice was cold, his gaze sharp as a blade.
Rebecca's pupils shrank. She tucked a few loose strands of hair behind her ear, forcing herself to stay calm.
"Matty, I was just talking to a friend. She was asking if I liked anything from King's latest collection. I got a little emotional thinking about us separating, so I just said whatever to brush her off. What's wrong?"
Matteo let out a short, humorless laugh, stepping closer and closer. "Who were you calling a bitch? And who's jealous of you?"
Rebecca's face turned deathly pale.
She grabbed onto his sleeve, her eyes filled with desperation.
"It's not what you think, Matty! You've misheard! My friend was upset that I've been spending all my time with you instead of shopping with her. She didn't call anyone a bitch…"
Matteo yanked her hand off him, his expression dark and unreadable. "What the hell have you done behind my back? Don't make me look into it myself. You must've said or done something to force Eve to leave!"
Just like before, tears started rolling down her face. She sniffled, her voice breaking. "I didn't! I only found out when you told me! I didn't do anything, Matty!"
But this time, Matteo didn't soften. Instead, he grabbed her wrist, his grip tightening.
His expression twisted with fury, his fingers digging in harder and harder as if he wanted to crush her fragile wrist.
"Rebecca, I don't have the patience to play your little games. You'd better start talking. Tell me the truth, all of it. Or else…"
His voice dropped even lower, chilling to the bone. "You know I've never been the forgiving type."
