"Do you know what you're talking about, boy?" my father-in-law chided.
Jack paused for a moment. "Look, I can wait, but Luna won't. If I don't get a house, she'll abort the baby!"
"What? How dare she?" my mother-in-law snapped, but she calmed down and turned to me. "So, when's the money coming, George?"
I put out the cigarette and tossed it into the ashtray. Smiling, I said, "Within the month. Won't be too long."
My in-laws heaved a collective sigh of relief and stopped arguing about Jack's loan. Thanks to me, my 'banker friend' showed up soon enough. He said Jack's name alone wasn't enough for the loan. He needed some guarantors. I convinced his sister and parents to take up that role.
I had my 'banker friend' to thank for approving the loan on the same day. A while later, Jack found himself 500 thousand dollars richer, and he and his family were overjoyed. Naturally, they had never seen so much money in their lives before.
The salesperson sweet-talked them, and they paid for the down payment while signing the S&P agreement. While they were happily destroying their nest egg, I sent off my 'banker friend.'
He happily handed me a cigarette. "Call me if you run into people like them again, bro."
I took the cigarette, smiling at him. 'Again? I'd rather never run into people like them in my life,' I thought.
They got a house and destroyed themselves in the process. It was a good day for me, so I proposed that we check out some cars and buy one while we're at it.
Queenie's family agreed, and they hopped into my car. They started talking about the kind of car they wanted, though they just wanted to look cool driving it. I took them to the dealership. We were going for a BMW 3 Series, but there was a 5 Series, so I told Queenie decisively, "This will give you the blitz you want."
"It's a bit expensive, isn't it?"
"Oh, we'll have the cash once I get the money. And even after paying off the car, we'll still have enough money to get a new house. A 5 Series is nothing."
"Yeah, Queenie. George can pay for this, so why aren't you letting him? Are you even my sister?" Jack came over and complained.
His mother nodded. "Yeah, Queenie. You've been trying to stop us from paying for the house, and now you don't want George to pay for the car? He said he'll pay off the loans once he gets the money. Nothing to be scared of. Or are you upset that you have to pay for Jack's house and car?"
She complained, "He's the only one carrying on our bloodline. What are you going to do with all that money if not help your brother? You might think it's unfair, but it's not. Your brother can help you out when you need him, right? He needs money to get married, so just pay for it. It's your job."
Queenie couldn't argue back. She paused and looked at me with worship in her eyes. "Sorry, honey. I didn't mean to. I…"
I looked at her lovingly. "I know what you're worried about, but I love you, and I want to give you and your family the best. Don't worry. Once I get the money, I'll pay off the loans."
"You're the best, honey!" Excited, my wife hugged me. I pulled her hand away and went to the counter with the saleswoman to finish the paperwork.
There was no down payment for the car, and the owner was Jack Rivera. Since they didn't keep inventory, we would have to wait for a week to get the car. We left the dealership, and I drove them home.
My mother-in-law happily said her husband's birthday was in two weeks and that she wanted to hold an extravagant party for him. Yes, I would be the one to organize and pay for everything. I was reminded of the chat history I uploaded to the cloud. Without hesitation, I promised my father-in-law an unforgettable party.
