EPILOGUE

AMELIA’S P.O.V

“Baby,” Kaden whispered, his voice soft as his stubble grazed my cheek. He placed soft kisses over my face and shoulders trying to rouse me awake but I wouldn’t move.

I mumbled a few incoherent words, nuzzling closer to him and the warmth that emanated from his body. He laughed, the sound husky and timber as his arms wrapped around me.

“You need to get up,” he told me, his lips brushing over my shoulders. “You asked me to wake you.”

“Give me five more minutes, please. I’m exhausted.”

He sighed, not fighting me on it because he knew just how exhausted I was.

After the incident with Blake, I was confined to the bed for the rest of my pregnancy. It was a miracle that I didn’t lose the baby, and an even bigger miracle when we found out that we were having twins.

The pregnancy was rough and there was a problem at every turn. Our babies came a few weeks early and the labor was so bad that I swore I would never do it again. We’d been parents for two years and even though I loved our kids, I was still adamant about that decision.

Two children were more than enough for me. They were little fireballs of energy, running around the house and destroying everything in their path. Kaden worked late last night and I had to wrangle them into bed alone. It was torture.

“The kids will be up in about an hour,” Kaden mumbled from behind me. “You can still sleep in longer.”

I thought about it for a moment before shaking my head. “It’s alright, I’m up already. I have to get everything ready.”

I pulled out of his grip, stretching my limbs as soon as my legs hit the ground. It wasn’t every day our children turned two, and I was determined to make it the best day ever.

Kaden blew up balloons while I iced their cake and flipped pancakes. They were picky eaters but they loved pancakes. I cut up their pancakes just the way they liked it and was setting the fruits in little hear shapes when I heard a sound that had a smile splitting over my skin.

“Mama!”

Kaden held our daughters in his arms. Madison and Isabella were fraternal twins. Where Madison took after me, Isabella was the spitting image of her father and it was only fitting because she was a daddy’s girl through and through.

It was Madison who called out to me and I wasted no time in taking her from Kaden’s arms and balancing her on my hip. I placed a kiss on her cheek before doing the same to Isabella.

“Hey sweetheart,” I whispered. “Happy birthday.”

She squealed, her lips widening into a toothy smile. “Mama, pancakes?”

“Yes, the pancakes are yours.”

I led her over to her high chair, securing her carefully before placing a plate in front of her. I watched as she shoved fruits in her mouth before offering one to Isabella who sat next to her.

Their bond warmed my heart. Sometimes when I watched them, it would remind me of Brittany. We hadn’t spoken in years now. The last time we spoke, it was to let her know that Blake was dead and that she was Alpha.

We agreed that it would be better for both parties if our packs had nothing to do with each other and she agreed. She apologized for everything that happened but at that point it was too late.

Some days, I was scared that my daughters would turn out like us.

Kaden pressed a kiss to my temple. “They’re going to be fine.”

‘How do you know that?”

“Because they have us. I’m not your father, I will never pit them against each other.”

“One of them is going to be Alpha, the other won’t.”

Madison was older by five minutes; the position was hers by birth. We had never spoken about it out loud but it was something that had weighed on me for a while.

“Isabella will know that she is not loved any less because she is younger.” He wrapped his arms around my hips and turned me to face them. “Look at our daughters, Amelia, do they look like girls who will grow up to despise each other?”

They smashed their fruits around in their plates, pressing sticky hands on each other’s faces. They laughed, the sound echoing off the walls. They loved each other. It wasn’t something that could be faked.

“No,” I said after a moment of silence. “They’re happy.”

“And it will remain that way,” he assured me. “I swear it. Should we bring the cake out now, or later?”

“Now, I want this to be just us.”

They had a big party coming, but that would be tomorrow. Today was our day.

I grabbed their cake, it was a small pink cake with sprinkles all over it and carried it over to them. Their eyes followed the candles as Kaden and I sang happy birthday. For that brief moment, everything was perfect and I knew that life couldn’t possibly get better than that.

There was no fear, no worry, just me with the people that mattered the most to me.

When it was time for them to blow out their candles, Kaden helped because they couldn’t do it on their own. They squealed, clapping with glee as I cut out pieces for them. I knew I’d regret it later, knew I’d hate myself for giving them sugar so early, but I did so anyway, and as they ate, I watched them knowing I deserved every moment of happiness.

I wasn’t sure if they had the same powers I did, I wouldn’t know until they got their wolves, but I didn’t care. I didn’t love them because of their status, I loved them because they were mine, because I had suffered and I deserved the happiness.

I had finally earned it.
