KADEN’S P.O.V

Blake was a fucking coward.

For someone who was brave enough to keep my mate for days, he ran off like a fucking wuss when he realized that he didn’t have his wolf to fight for him.

I made sure to comb the entire border to ensure that he was not lurking around. The last thing I wanted was for someone else to go missing. It was torturous enough searching for Amelia, I wasn’t sure I had it in me to search for someone else.

As soon as I was sure that Blake wasn’t hiding anymore, I rushed over to Amelia. Her mind was quiet which wasn’t unusual. Ever since she returned, she preferred to stay on her own with her thoughts. I hated it but I knew it would take some time before she went back to the way she was- if she ever did. If she never went back, I didn’t care, I just wanted her.

The moment I got to the car, I knew something was wrong. Caleb was standing next to the car but his brows were furrowed in deep thought. He looked somewhat relieved when he saw me but when I asked, he said nothing, merely shrugged, slapped me on my shoulder with a small congratulations and walked off.

“You told him about the baby?” I asked Amelia the moment I got in and she nodded slowly.

“I thought you would have.”

“I wanted you to do it on your own terms, Amelia. It’s your body and you’re the one carrying the baby, not me.”

She just hummed but there was something else in her tone, I couldn’t put my finger on it. I wanted to ask and demand an answer from her but I knew her well enough to know that there was very little possibility that she would answer me. It would only end in an argument or with her shutting down and I worked too hard to make her open up just to ruin it in one day.

I kept my opinions to myself and drove home in silence. It was the most uncomfortable car ride I had ever been in but I said nothing. The moment I parked the car in the driveway, I heard her speak.

“What would have happened if the baby was Blake’s?”

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from her but that was not it. I turned to her in shock at the words that had just come out of her mouth but she was already looking at me. There was no sign of backing down in her eyes, she genuinely wanted an answer to the question.

“Isn’t it enough that the baby isn’t his?” I asked but she shook her head.

“Your pack will wonder if it is his. I was with him for a long time and I know a few people saw you feeling the pain of- us,” she said the last word as if it burned her. “What would have happened if I walked into this pack and told you I was carrying Blake’s child.”

I tried to think about it but I couldn’t picture it. It wasn’t important to me, neither was it logical but it bothered her and I knew it was my job to calm her down and reassure her when necessary so I forced myself to picture it, to picture how I would have felt.

“I wouldn’t have been happy,” she started to leave but I grabbed her. “You asked a question, Amelia, so you’re going to listen to the answer.”

“I don’t want to hear it anymore.”

“Tough shit,” I grabbed her chin and turned her to face me. “Would I be happy about you carrying another man’s child? Of course not. But I said this before and I’ll say it again, Amelia, I don’t blame you for anything that happened in that house. You didn’t ask to be taken, neither did you ask for him to be attracted to you.”

She swallowed deeply. “Would you have made me get rid of it?’

There was a mix of annoyance and shock that she would even think that low of me. it took me a second to gather my thoughts so I wouldn’t yell.

“Why the fuck would I do that?” I asked incredulously. “It’s your child, I have no say in what you choose to do with it.”

“So you wouldn’t be involved?”

I exhaled deeply before speaking. “Amelia, any child of yours is mine too, do you understand me? Blake’s or not, it would have been mine. Do you understand me?”

Her eyes welled up with tears and before I could process what was happening, she burst out in tears. I let out a curse and pulled her over the controls and into my lap. She buried her face into my chest and shook with the force of her sobs.

It pissed me off to no end that the bastard still had so much of a hold on her. This conversation should never have happened, she should have never doubted me but somehow, he was burrowed under her skin and she doubted me. I didn’t blame her for it, I blamed the bastard.

“I’m sorry,” she sniffled. “It was a stupid conversation.”

“If it worries you, then it isn’t stupid,” I pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Come, let’s go inside, okay?”

“Okay.”

I got out of the car and picked her up so she could wrap her legs around my waist. She buried her face into the crook of my neck and held me like I was her lifeline. I traced my fingers down her spine gently, hoping that she could feel just how hard my heart was beating for her. I hoped it was enough for her to know that I loved her more than my own life and nothing could make me leave her.

“Kaden,” she whispered softly and I looked down at her.

“Yes baby?”

“Can you do me a favor?”

“Anything you want.”

“I want you to make him pay,” her voice was soft but firm. “Blake I mean, for what he did to me.”

I nodded. “I swear it.”
