BLAKE’S P.O.V
Waiting patiently had always been something I did extremely well. I was naturally a patient person and I believed in the long game but I was starting to get increasingly frustrated by how long of a game this was becoming. With every passing second, it became harder not to storm that ground and take Amelia as my own but I couldn’t. That bastard, Kaden, had everything on tight lockdown.
Something went on last night. One of our spies had told me that there was a disturbance at the border but it was quickly covered up and everywhere was locked tight. It was difficult to get in or out and there was no way to know what had happened.
I knew of one way and that was how I ended up dialing Aiden at six in the morning. He picked up on the fourth ring and he sounded grumpy as fuck.
“Is there a reason you are calling me this early?” he drawled. “What the hell is your problem? I offered to help, I didn’t sign up to be your toy.”
“Are you done bitching?” I spat and he fell silent. “What happened at the border last night? There was a disturbance.”
“It seems as though you know more about this pack than I do. I should be asking you.”
I let out a warning growl. I was not in the mood for his bullshit or his sassiness. “I asked you a question and I expect an answer not some bullshit smartass response.”
I could almost see him roll his eyes on the other end. “It was a joke, lighten up for fucks sake. I don’t know what happened. In case you didn’t notice, it is six in the morning. I haven’t left my house and I haven’t had the chance to talk to anyone yet. I can try to find out but I don’t know how far I will get. If it is very important then chances are that Kaden already buried it.”
“Unbury it,” I instructed and he laughed.
“Kaden doesn’t like me. I am more likely to find out your identity than I am to get answers out of him.”
“You are useless,” I spat and was about to hang up when he spoke.
“Maybe, but would a useless informant be able to tell you about Kaden and Amelia.”
That was enough to pique my interest. “I’m listening.”
“So Nadine- Kaden’s first mate is suddenly gone. The day she disappeared, Amelia was admitted into the hospital and from what I heard, Kaden had almost choked her to death. The guards were called in to investigate.”
Fury filled my features. I barely said a goodbye before I hung up the phone. I could barely see in front of me, all I could feel was red. He had laid his hands on her. The bastard deserved to die for that. I let out a feral growl and flung the first thing I touched which so happened to be a glass table by the side of my chair. I shattered on impact but it wasn’t enough to calm my anger.
I stormed out of the room and headed straight for the council room. Sam was seated there with some other guards but the moment she saw me, she knew something was wrong.
“Get out, everyone,” she instructed and immediately, they filed out. Once the last person was gone, she made her way over to me. “Tell me, what’s wrong?’
“He hurt her,” I growled out and I didn’t need to specify because she knew. “We need to take them today.”
“We cannot do that, Blake. Their pack is on lockdown. If we go now, we will be annihilated. We have to take our time.”
“He is hurting her!”
“I know, and if she is as smart as you say she is then she can handle herself,” I knew Sam was right but that didn’t mean I had to like it. She cupped my cheeks and brushed her lips against mine. “Just relax, I can help you with that if you want. I promise you’ll feel good.”
The idea was tempting and I might have taken her up on it if I didn’t hear a small gasp from behind us. I turned to find Brittany standing there. She had hurt in her eyes but she quickly wiped it away and rushed off. Sam simply rolled her eyes and pulled away from me. She didn’t do petty drama. She just turned away and went back to the work on the table.
I could have stayed with her but for some reason, I found myself going after Brittany. I knew she heard me following her but she was content ignoring me and trying to get away from me as fast as possible.
“Stop!” I ordered and she stilled in her tracks. “I’m not going to chase you so you better tell me what the fuck that was about.”
“I came to talk to you about my father. He wanted me to pass along a message.”
“Is there a reason he cannot do it himself?”
“He is still sick,” she spat, anger filling her words. “He hasn’t recovered from whatever bullshit you are pumping into him.”
I backed her into a wall. “You should be very careful how you speak to me, Brittany.”
“I’m not afraid of you. You have done the worst you can do to me,” her eyes were defiant. “He told me to tell you that she knows. That was all he said before he passed out.”
“What does that mean?”
“Why don’t you ask him?”
I hated the way she spoke back but at the same time I loved it. There was something about the defiance in her eyes that pulled me in. I didn’t want to snuff it out, no, I wanted her to eat her own words.
“If you would excuse me,” she tried to brush past me but I grabbed her arm and this time, when I pushed her back into the wall, I covered her body with mine. She laughed. “I would rather die than fuck you again, Blake.”
“Your body says otherwise,” she was trembling and I could smell her arousal.
Tears filled her eyes. I was shocked by that because Brittany didn’t cry. I pulled off her like I had been burned and slowly, her sobs morphed into a laugh.
“The body lies,” she said simply before storming off.
