AMELIA’S P.O.V

Tara wasn’t responding to me.

After making me run into the middle of something I had no idea off, she relinquished control to me and receded into the far corners of my mind. I tried asking her what this was about but she was more than content with ignoring me.

Aaron rode in the backseat of the car with us. Kaden kept a close eye on him and was glancing at him every few seconds. I didn’t know much but I knew he wasn’t a danger to me. There was something about him that called out to me. I wasn’t sure if it was his features or his overall disposition.

“Do you have a picture of her?” I asked making all eyes turn to me but I was speaking to Aaron. “My mother- I want to see her. I want to know how much I was lied to.”

He reached into his pocket and handed me a picture. It was old and worn but I could still make it out. The woman- my mother- looked exactly like me. She was beautiful and she had eyes that were both warm and kind. In the picture, she was pregnant and she had a wide smile on her face. I had never seen her before which meant that the woman Gregory had told me was my mother all this time wasn’t mine- she was Brittany’s.

“She is beautiful,” I whispered and Aaron nodded. I tried to hand the photo back to him but he shook his head.

“It is yours, please. I have a lifetime of memories with my sister and you never even got to meet her. You should have this. She loved you, I don’t know much but I know that she did.”

“Do you know when she died?” I asked and he shook his head.

“Word went out that she died in child birth but I know my sister. Our kind- we have a special bond- she didn’t die when she had you. I could still feel her for almost two years after. I don’t know if Gregory kept her for something but I know she didn’t die when she had you. He wanted everyone to believe that but I know the truth.”

“So what now?” I asked. “Why show up now? What am I supposed to do? Am I just meant to sit by and get killed like her?”

‘Your powers are awakened and you know who you are. You best believe that Gregory knows too. They will start coming for you and before then, you need to build an army. You need to get your allies. There are millions of people who would rush to the aid of a Vibrius wolf.”

“Hold on,” Kaden cut both of us off. “Are you suggesting that we tell everyone who she is? Are you insane? That is the quickest way to get her killed.”

“It is the quickest way to keep her safe. People will start coming for her. She needs allies. She needs to establish our kingdom again.”

“I can’t rule a kingdom.”

“It is your destiny.”

“No!” Kaden turned to Aaron. “Sit down and shut the fuck up, you have said more than enough.”

No one spoke after that. Kaden’s words hung in the air and with them, the anger and power with which he spoke. I wasn’t sure what his issue was and why he didn’t want me to do it. I knew why I was against it but I wasn’t sure about him.

He drove to the pack house and ordered some guards to keep a close eye on Aaron. Just before leaving, Aaron grabbed my hand and I heard his voice clear as day in my head. “Think about it, Amelia. This is your destiny. This is who you are. You have to do it.”

He pulled away and I realized that all that happened just took place in under two seconds. Kaden was staring at me with questions in his eyes but I couldn’t respond to any. I didn’t know how. Instead, I just got into the car and sat down to wait. Kaden took another few minutes to speak to some guards before getting in. I waited until he was sat before I spoke.

“Why don’t you want me to reveal who I am?” I asked and he stayed silent. “I need an answer, Kaden.”

“It is too dangerous. You know nothing about that life and I cannot protect you if you are off ruling another kingdom. Your life will be in danger.”

“What if it is my destiny?”

“You were mated to me. Your destiny is intertwined with mine. Your destiny is to-”

“Be your Luna?” I cut him off and he went silent. “That is what this is about, isn’t it? You cannot have a Luna who isn’t behind you.”

“No, Amelia, you are not meant to be behind me. You are by my side, you are my equal.”

“Then let me do what I was born to do.”

“Amelia-”

“I was mated to Blake first,” I cut him off and I felt his anger rise. “You might hate it but it is true. Maybe if I had mated with him, I would be able to rule a kingdom. There is a reason I met him first.”

Kaden said nothing, he just started the car. He drove back to Clara’s house in silence and I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe I had crossed a line by bringing up Blake. He didn’t speak even when he stopped the car in the driveway. It wasn’t until I started to get out that I heard him finally talk.

“You may have met Blake first but it was always going to be us,” his voice was barely over a whisper. “Not wanting you to announce who you are has nothing to do with me wanting to keep you caged. I want to keep you safe, Amelia, but if you want to do this, I will support you. At the end of the day, what matters to me is you.”

“I didn’t mean to-” he held up a hand to stop me.

“Goodnight, Amelia, I will see you tomorrow.”
