AMELIA’S P.O.V

The ride was completely silent and at first, there was some tension because I hadn’t been in a confined space with him in a while but the tension bled out soon enough leaving me feeling more relaxed than I had in a while. The truth was that I had missed Kaden. Despite everything, my wolf still called out to his and she assured me that he was fine and he wasn’t going to hurt us but that didn’t mean I could just forget everything that happened. It still felt like yesterday to me and I couldn’t just forget it.

“Amelia,” his voice was carefully soft and I turned to him. “You might want to put your wall up.”

My cheeks heated with embarrassment when I realized that I was unintentionally projecting down our bond. I wondered how much he heard and what he felt about it. I made sure my wall was firmly in place but I couldn’t bring myself to think about anything else for fear that he would overhear.

“I’m not upset,” he announced. “You don’t have to feel guilty for how you feel. It is your right to feel that way. I hurt you and you can take however long you need to get over it.”

“I don’t want to talk about this. We have talked about it too much. Can we just focus on something else like maybe how I am part of a secret werewolf line that I didn’t even know existed until today?”

He shook his head as he smiled softly. He didn’t protest to my changing the subject, he just sighed and leaned back into his seat. “Did you have any inclination that you could be different? I don’t know much about your lineage but I presume that was the entire point. If people went out of their way to destroy it then it stands to reason that there is something special about them.”

I hesitated for a second. I did know I was special, I just didn’t realize it was a big deal. I thought it had been as a result of me finding my wolf late. I opened my mouth to speak unsure of how he would take it but no words came out. I had lied to him for the duration of our time together.

“Amelia,” he probed. “Is there something you want to say?”

“My wolf can sense when people are lying and if they are good people or not,” I blurted out and he stilled. “I just thought it was a fluke but it works every single time. She just always knows which is why I didn’t trust Natasha. She also says she can get into any mind link she wants. She can break mental shields. I didn’t believe it until that day in the forest. She had her claws in your mind and I couldn’t reach it normally. My wolf was the one who broke through it.”

He didn’t say anything. He just kept driving for the next few seconds, he wouldn’t even glance over at me. At the last minute, he turned the car off the road. He did it so quickly that if I wasn’t using my seat belt, I would’ve been thrown forward. We were in the middle of an abandoned road but that didn’t seem to matter to Kaden who turned to me with an annoyed expression.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?” he asked but I couldn’t respond. “I am assuming you knew about this since the moment you shifted. You should have told me.”

“I thought it was a fluke.”

“Well it isn’t a fluke, is it?” he argued and I crossed my arms over my chest.

“You have no right to be angry at me over this. I didn’t know you then, I didn’t trust you.”

“But you got to know me, you got to trust me.”

“You didn’t tell me when you were trying to get your memories back either,” I shot back and he stilled. I shouldn’t have thrown it in his face but it was the only way to get him to listen. “You also didn’t tell me when you started to spend so much time at the hospital. You only told me when things started getting bad. You don’t get to be angry with me.”

He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. “You’re right. I lied to you but that doesn’t change the fact that you lied too.” He scoffed. “It’s no wonder Natasha could come between us, we were lying to each other.”

“Kaden-”

“I’m sorry I lied. We can’t do that again,” I opened my mouth to protest but he cut me off. “If we want to work- and I really want us to work- then we have to stop lying to each other. We need to be completely honest.”

“Okay,” I answered softly and I saw him lean forward like he was going to kiss me. I wasn’t sure if I would have been able to stop him on my own but he managed to stop himself and cleared his throat.

“I’m sorry, I never should have-” his words trailed off as his eyes glossed over. I waited patiently for him to finish his conversation. When his eyes snapped back to normal, there was concern in them.

“Is everything okay?”

“There is a disturbance at the border. I am too far from Clara’s to drop you off. I need to take you with me but you cannot get out of the car.”

I nodded dumbly because I didn’t know what else to do. He drove to the border in a panic and despite our walls being up, I could still feel his panic and unease. When we arrived, he gestured to me to remain seated and that was my initial plan until I heard voices.

I got out of the car slowly and made my way closer. I just wanted to eavesdrop a little, that was until I heard exactly what was being said.

“What do you want?” I heard Kaden ask. “Why shouldn’t I kill you right here?”

“I just want the Vibrius wolf. I have been tracking her for years.”

“I don’t know of any Vibrius wolf,” Kaden lied. “Leave.”

“I have to see her. She is in danger, please.”

I was going to turn back when my wolf stirred. “Go to him.”

“Are you insane?” I whispered back to her. “Kaden will kill us.”

“He is an ally. Go to him, now!”

“I can’t do that.”

She seemed to realize I wasn’t going to listen to her. The next thing I knew, I was thrown back as she took control and I watched as she dashed towards the open field.
