AMELIA’S P.O.V

When we got to the house, no one was there. It was completely empty and I never banked on being alone with Kaden. It was already hard enough to be in the same car without touching him, but being in the same house was another ball game entirely because I had memories of Kaden around this house. I had memories of him in my bed and in my space and seeing him seated comfortably on the living room couch was bringing back memories that I had tried so hard to suppress.

To his credit, he didn’t seem as bothered as I was. He had one leg crossed over the other and he was still slowly nursing his coffee from the café. I wasn’t sure if I was relieved or annoyed that he didn’t seem as bothered as I was. He had promised not to do more than I could handle so maybe he was just living up to his word.

We waited for thirty minutes before they finally arrived and to say they were shocked to see both of us was an understatement. I was pacing the room and Kaden was seated comfortably on the couch. Pamela looked between the two of us.

“Should I be concerned?” she asked and I quickly shook my head. “Did you decide to take him back?” when I said no, she smiled. “Good, because he has to work for it. Now, what is the issue? You both look like shit.”

I looked to Kaden for help because suddenly, my tongue felt heavy. He was quick to jump in without me having to say a word. “Do you know anything about the Vibrius wolves?”

They both stilled. If I had any doubts that they had answers, they were gone immediately. They cast a wary look at each other before finally turning back to Kaden and I. All form of amusement was wiped off their faces as they took the seat opposite us.

“Where did you hear that term?” Devin asked in a cool voice. “That name has not been used in a very long time.”

“So they did exist?” I asked and he nodded. “What happened to them?”

“You tell me, you were the one who asked. Why are you suddenly curious, Amelia? Some things are better left uncovered. You do not know the danger that comes with using that name. There is a reason we did not say anything to you.”

I didn’t miss his words. “You knew? You knew I was one of them and you didn’t tell me.”

“Amelia,” Pamela cut in. “The more you knew, the more in danger you were. Your kind has a scent that only grows stronger with knowledge. You are not just any wolf, Amelia, you are blessed by the goddess herself. My family has always been tasked with protecting your kind. That is why we have the powers that we do. When your kind went into hiding, we moved here, we swore never to speak of it again.”

“So you all knew I was alive and you did nothing?” I asked aloud. I had never felt such betrayal in my life. “You knew he wasn’t my father.”

“We didn’t know where you were. Your mother was secretive, she was in hiding. It wasn’t until we saw you that we knew. Believe me if we knew, we would have come for you. It is the sole reason we live- to protect the integrity of your lineage.”

“You could have still told me,” I spat and to her credit, she didn’t deny it. I crossed my arms over my chest and scoffed. “I have been living a lie that you helped with. I cannot believe that I was so stupid.”

I stood to my feet but Pamela was right behind me. She grabbed my upper arm. “Amelia, you need to be careful. I know you are upset right now but you are powerful beyond measure and there are people who will do anything to get that power. You need to stay.”

“I can’t stay here. I cannot even look at you right now.”

“You need to be safe.”

“I’ll be with her,” Kaden announced and all eyes turned to him. “She just needs a second. There is nowhere she is safer than with me and you know it. I will have her back in one piece. Just let her leave.”

I could tell that Pamela didn’t completely agree but she nodded and released my arm. The moment I was free, I shot out of the house without looking back. Clara was making her way towards the house as I rushed out and I didn’t even stop to speak to her, I just headed straight for Kaden’s car. I heard Kaden explain something to her but I couldn’t pick up the words.

A few seconds later, he joined me in the car. He didn’t say a word, he didn’t even start the car, he just sat there with me not saying anything. I wasn’t sure if it was the mate bond or just how well he knew me, but he knew what I needed at that moment was silence and he was more than willing to share it with me.

“I still haven’t taken you back,” I warned and he laughed. “You are just the lesser of two evils.”

“Whatever you say,” the corner of his lips was turned up. “I’m sorry that they didn’t tell you. Sometimes we want to protect the people we love and we do it the wrong way.”

“Is this about them or you?” I drawled and he shook his head in amusement.

“Maybe it is both,” he shrugged. “Your sassiness isn’t going to turn me away, Amelia. I am here for the long haul. I don’t care if you are screaming at me or crying your eyes out, I am here.”

I didn’t know what to say to that without tearing up so I stayed silent and stared out the window. He must have realized that too because he sighed.

“Where do you want to go? Do you want me to just drive around the pack? I can do that for as long as you want. I can take a long route and then turn back here in three hours.”

I thought about it, three hours in the car with Kaden not saying a word. It was going to be pure torture but at the same time, it was going to help me get my mind off everything. I thought about it for a split second before putting on my seatbelt.

“Can you make it five?” I asked and he smirked.
