KADEN’S P.O.V

I wanted to go to Amelia but I felt like enough time had not passed yet. She hadn’t reached out and I thought she would do so at her own pace and when she felt ready. I made sure to send her flowers every morning but I never got a response back as to whether or not she got them. As I stared at her name on my screen, I had to fight the urge to click dial.

A knock on my door snapped me out of my thoughts and I looked up just as Caleb walked in. Our friendship had taken a hit since what happened and I couldn’t blame him. I had hurt someone he loved and it was unforgiveable. If he was in my shoes, I wasn’t sure I would be able to forgive him either.

“The guards are back in formation and the border is clear, although there have been some suspicious rogue sightings,” he rattled off the news as if he was reading it off a piece of paper. “I have asked the guards to keep an eye out and I will let you know if anything changes.”

“Thank you, Caleb.”

He turned on his heels to leave and I wanted to call him back but I kept my mouth shut. His hand rested on the door knob before he stilled and turned to face me. “You look like shit so that makes me feel a little bit better.”

I cracked a small smile. “I feel like shit too, does that help?”

“More than you know,” he mused and I laughed. He was smiling too and it was as if he caught himself because his smile quickly disappeared. “What you did was incredibly stupid and insane. You are lucky that Amelia is even in this pack after everything that she went through.”

“I know.”

“I intercepted all your flowers,” he admitted and I was taken aback. I knew he was upset but I didn’t know he was that angry. “I didn’t do it to spite you, I did it because that is a cop out. She doesn’t need stupid flowers as an apology. What she needs is for you to get off your ass and fight for her.”

“I did, she said she couldn’t be with me.”

“Did she actually say that or did she say that she needed space?” the honest truth was, I couldn’t remember her exact words, all I remembered was feeling like absolute shit and not being able to look at her. “You are better than this, Kaden. I know that and so does she so instead of sitting here and moping around, you could actually get off your ass and show her.”

“How do I do that?”

“If I told you then it would show just how much you truly don’t deserve her,” he shrugged before turning on his heels and pulling the door open. He had stepped out halfway when he stopped. “I heard she was in the library. If you leave now, you might catch her.”

He left without saying another word and I knew what I had to do. I canceled all my meetings and drove as fast as I could to the library. I was lucky enough to catch Amelia just as she was leaving. Her head was bent down and she looked anxious and out of place. She was tugging at the sleeves of her dress and it was clear that she wanted to get out as soon as possible.

“Amelia,” I called out to her and she jumped. I wasn’t sure if it was because of me or if it was just her anxiety but that didn’t stop me from feeling immensely guilty. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I was just passing by and-”

“Were you?” she asked with a heavy dose of suspicion and I sighed.

“No, I wasn’t,” there was no use lying to her, she always knew. “I found out where you were. I wanted to see you, Amelia. I miss you and-”

“You miss me?’ she crossed her arms over her chest. “If you missed me you would have come to see me. You avoided me and you ignored me.”

“I was giving you space like I thought you wanted,” I whispered and she scoffed. “I know you are upset but come to dinner with me.” She started to walk away but I called out to her. “Please, just this once and I will never bother you again if you don’t want me to.”

She debated my words for a full minute before sighing and getting into the passenger seat. I didn’t realize how much I had missed her until I saw her in my space again. Everything felt perfect, she was where she belonged, only, she felt so far away. I couldn’t reach out and touch her like I wanted to, I couldn’t hold her like I used to and it was my fault.

“Don’t look at me like that, please,” she whispered, her voice sounding broken.

“I don’t understand.”

“When you look at me like that, it makes me want to touch you and I don’t want to touch you right now, so please, don’t look at me like that,” I promptly looked away. “It isn’t that I don’t want you, Kaden, but I want to take things slow right now. I still need some time.”

“That’s okay,” I assured her and I felt her confusion as she turned to me. She clearly wasn’t expecting that response from me. “All we have is time. We have the rest of our lives and I am certain that I will make things up to you, so what is a few weeks in the grand scheme of things?”

The car was silent as I drove towards her friend’s restaurant. I wanted a private meal but I wasn’t sure if she was ready to be alone with me just yet. Her friend’s parents owned the restaurant so she could count on being safe there. I wasn’t sure if she would understand the gesture but judging by how she looked at me when I stopped the car- she did.

“Do you want to order?” I asked but she shook her head. “Okay then, we can just get into the café-”

“No,” she cut me off. “This doesn’t mean I forgive you.”

“What doesn’t?”

She ignored my question. “I might be trying to feign anger with you but you’re the only one I know that I can trust with this.”

“What is it?” I asked and she turned to me.

“What do you know about the Vibrius wolves?”
