AMELIA’S P.O.V

“I’m sorry,” he apologized profusely before stepping aside.

I tried to hide the small smile on my face as we made our way in. She held onto my hand and I was greeted with the smell of paper and ink. It was a rather distinct smell and wasn’t what one would usually enjoy but I loved it because it reminded me of peace and tranquility. Once we were away from the guards, I turned to her.

“Thank you, you didn’t have to do that for me,” I whispered. “I would have just left. I am truly grateful.”

“Please, you are Kaden’s mate, I would do anything for you,” I tried not to let my disappointment show but she saw it. “Ah, I can see that look. You are doubting your relationship after everything that happened.”

“You heard about it?”

“Darling, the entire pack knows about it.”

I buried my face in my hands in embarrassment. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. It was bad enough that a few people knew but knowing that everyone knew was even worse.

She led me towards a chair and helped me into the seat. “It isn’t the end of the world.”

‘Oh, I think it is,” I mumbled. “Do you know how embarrassing this is to know that everyone is aware that my relationship failed.”

“It didn’t fail, there was just a minor setback and you shouldn’t have expected anything less. Considering who your family is, I am surprised you got off that easy. Your line isn’t exactly known for having easy lives.”

This was not the first time she was talking about my family and this time, I was determined to not let the conversation die out just like that. I needed to figure out what exactly she knew about my family. It was mainly for my own curiosity but also because anything was better than dwelling on the status of my relationship with Kaden.

“You keep talking about my family like you knew them. Do you mean my father?” I asked and she snorted.

“Please, your father is the least important person in your lineage. I am talking about your mother. It is a surprise they haven’t come looking for you yet. I mean, you are their heir after all.”

“I don’t understand.”

She sighed deeply and I could see her debating something in her mind. I stayed silent not wanting to interrupt whatever process was going on. After a moment of deliberation, she stood to her feet and excused herself. I watched her disappear and although I wanted to follow her, I forced myself to remain seated. She couldn’t just leave in the middle of the conversation… right?

For the next few minutes, I sat there wondering what the hell had just happened when she returned. In her hands, she held a huge book. It was large and thick and it looked more like an encyclopedia than anything. She put it in my hands and I wasn’t surprised by just how heavy it was. I made to flip the first page but she stopped me.

“I need you to know that the moment you are aware, they will be too. I need you to be very careful on your next moves. You could put this down and live in blissful ignorance.”

“Ignorance has never helped me anyway,” I said simply before opening the first page and I was greeted with what looked like a painting of a couple.

They looked regal in formal attire and their eyes looked alive, even in the picture. Their names were scribbled down but it was nearly illegible and I couldn’t make it out. I flipped the pages and I saw that it contained details about their lives. They were the rulers of a pack.

“Who are these?”

“Your ancestors,” she answered. “They were the rulers of the Vibrius pack. It was one of the oldest packs in the world. It is believed that they were blessed by the goddess herself because every member of that pack had a unique ability. They lived in isolation and they only mated with their predestined mates because doing otherwise could ruin the bloodline.”

I flipped through the pages. “What happened to them? Why haven’t I heard about them?”

“A few years ago, some Alphas became jealous and attacked. They had fallen out of favor with the goddess because their leader at the time wanted to marry someone who was not his fated mate. They were killed and wiped out, all except two- a brother and a sister. They were young, they were able to hide and blend in but you can always notice someone from the Vibrius pack- there are signs.”

I was drawn to the story, almost enraptured.

“The sister went on to find her mate, a young man, very handsome but also very cruel. She was pregnant and he upset the wrong people. He was killed and she was taken by the very man who killed her husband. He knew who she was, he used her to find her brother and he slaughtered him leaving just her. The last I saw of her, she had died in child birth and her daughter was given to someone else to raise as their own.”

“Are you saying that the last of the Vibrius wolves was my mother?” I asked wanting to be sure and she nodded. “That cannot be right. You must have the wrong person. Brittany is my sister, my mother had two daughters. We would both be Vibrius wolves.”

“Your mother had only one child, Amelia. Your father had a mate, she was Brittany’s mother. Brittany isn’t my sister.”

“No,” I stood to my feet. I couldn’t believe that my entire life was a lie. “Tell me you are joking.”

“I am not. Amelia, you are the last of the Vibrius wolves.”
