AMELIA’S P.O.V
I couldn’t fall asleep and I knew without a doubt that Kaden couldn’t either. I could feel his worry and unease down the bond and it took everything in me not to go to him. It was ingrained in me to want peace especially with my mate but Clara was right and I had to stand up for myself or I was going to end up in an unhappy relationship for the rest of my life. I wasn’t truly going to leave Kaden, at least, I hoped he wouldn’t give me reason to leave.
Sometime around four, I found myself walking out of the room and pulling on some training clothes. I figured it would do me some good to take a small jog to the training field before anyone else arrived. I was about to leave the house when I felt a presence behind me. I knew immediately it was Kaden and I took a deep breath before turning to face him.
He was wearing only sweatpants that hung low on his lips. My mouth dried up as I took him in. He was built like a marble sculpture and framed like an Adonis. It was hard to sometimes remember that he was human like me. I had to force all dirty thoughts out of my mind because I knew ending up in bed with him would only push aside our problems and not solve them.
“Where are you going?” he asked and I was about to give a snarky response when I realized that there was no hidden malice or suspicion in his tone. He was just asking an innocent question presumably out of concern.
“I can’t sleep, I wanted to take a run and a head start for training,” I answered and he hummed with a frown. It was clear that he didn’t approve but he wasn’t going to tell me that- not now, not when we were already on very thin ice.
“Can I convince you not to go?”
“I just need some space to think,” I said softly. “Ian is a friend and a trainer, that is all he will ever be.”
He nodded slowly, still not happy about it but slowly accepting. “Alright then, I’ll be here when you get back. We still have to talk.”
I gave him a small smile before leaving the house quickly. There was something in the air, something foreign and unusual and it took me a second to realize that it was awkwardness. Kaden and I were never awkward with each other, we could sit in silence and say nothing but there was never unease. It just showed how bad things were and more than ever, I wanted to fix it.
When I got to the training grounds, it was around five and Ian was already there. He looked surprised to see me and I didn’t blame him. Anyone who witnessed what happened yesterday would have assumed that I wouldn’t be showing up today.
“You look exhausted, did you get any sleep?” he asked and I shook my head. “That’s okay, we can just do a little stretch to kind of keep you awake.”
We worked in silence- well, I was silent while Ian tried to make me laugh by speaking but I wasn’t really in the mood. I just wanted some peace and quiet and as the sun rose, I couldn’t help but wonder what exactly I was doing there. The others started to arrive and I noticed most of them whispering and pointing. I should have expected that the news would have traveled but I didn’t think it would travel so fast.
I was uncomfortable and self conscious in the midst of the teenagers. Most of them looked hungry for gossip and I wouldn’t have put it past them to walk up to me and ask me questions. Ian was addressing them and preparing to start training when I realized something. I was doing exactly what I had criticized Kaden for doing. I was running from my problems instead of talking them out. I was choosing to hide instead of being vulnerable with my mate.
I cursed and Ian turned to me. “Is there a problem, Amelia?”
“Yes, I have to go, I am so sorry,” whispers broke out at my words and I saw concern take over Ian’s face.
“Are you alright? Do you feel sick?”
“No,” I said already running towards the road. “I just need to do something at home.”
I took a cab to the house and tapped my feet anxiously as he drove. I prayed to the goddess that Kaden kept to his word and was at home. In my rush, I had forgotten that I didn’t carry my card or any cash to pay the driver. I cursed thinking about how I was going to ask him to wait while I looked for money upstairs to pay him when I felt a hand settle on my waist. Kaden reached out from behind me and handed the driver a hundred dollar bill.
“You can keep the change,” he said and of course the driver wasn’t one to argue because he tipped his hat and drove off leaving us in the driveway. His hand was still on my waist and his chest was pressed against me. I could smell his body wash and after shave. “You’re back early.”
“I-” I trailed off not knowing what to say. Kaden turned me around and all the words died in my mouth as I took him in. “I wasn’t where I was supposed to be.”
He smiled softly. “Come in, Amelia, we need to talk, truly.”
I allowed him lead me in without a peep. The house smelled like bacon and eggs. He had set the table for breakfast and he made so much that I was concerned it would all go to waste. He led me to the table and pushed my chair in for me. It took me a second to realize that he was stalling. He was unsure of what I was going to say and the Alpha Kaden that men shit their pants over was stalling in his own living room.
“When you left I didn’t know what to do so I started on breakfast. I realize it was a bit early but I just couldn’t sit down. I made chocolate chip waffles and some burritos if you want. I didn’t know what you would want to eat so I-”
“Kaden,” I cut him off and he finally looked at me. “Thank you for all of this but we really need to talk. You can’t put it off for much longer.”
He sighed. “Can I just say something first?” he asked and I nodded. “I didn’t know this made you uncomfortable, okay? I just thought I was- I don’t know what I thought. If you don’t want me to go there again, I swear I will not. I just want you, Amelia, nothing else matters as long as I have you.”
Tears gathered in my eyes and he reached out to wipe a stray one. “I don’t want to police what you do. I just get jealous when you spend the whole day there. I don’t mind you visiting her once or twice and for a few hours at most but when you spend the entire afternoon there it just rubs me off the wrong way.”
“I know,” he sighed running his hand down his now clean shaven face. “I just want to find out what happened.”
“Then let us do it together. Don’t shut me out of everything. Don’t try to do it on your own. Let us go together and figure out what happened.”
He looked up at me. “You would do that?”
“Of course, it is you and me against the world, remember? That is how it should be.”
“Okay, thank you,” he reached out to stroke my hand and before I could chicken out, I leaned forward and kissed him deeply.
We ate breakfast tangled in each other’s arms. We both had nothing to do all day and that was when I got the amazing idea to go to the hospital. He was against it at first but I managed to convince him that there was no better way to solidify our new agreement than to address the one thing that seemed to be pulling us apart.
The nurse recognized Kaden the moment we walked in and I chose not to let them put a damper on my mood. He must have noticed however because he intertwined our fingers. “She just knows me as the Alpha.”
We both knew it was a lie but I was glad that he was at least trying to make me feel better. There were three guards in front of her room and one more inside. She looked the same as she did before, she just had a lot more color in her features. The guards bowed when they saw us and excused us to give us some space. Kaden gestured for me to come closer but I shook my head.
“Have you remembered anything else?” I asked but he shook his head. “So you still don’t have any idea of who she is or how you met.”
“No, I just know she was someone important. Dr. Brown and I haven’t had time to work on my memory given everything that has been happening.”
A part of me was grateful for that. I started to walk into the room when I heard a familiar voice outside. I was confused as to what Kaden’s mother would be doing in the hospital. I followed her blindly only to see her walking into a room. No one paid her any heed. I walked over to the door and placed my ear against it.
“Kaden is here,” she said. “He is going to realize soon that something is wrong. We need to find a permanent way to get rid of the girl.”
“What do you want me to do?” Dr. Brown asked. “I have kept her asleep like you asked. I have done my part. I cannot kill her, I refuse to do that. If anything happens, I will be blamed. You should just tell him the truth.”
“You listen here, doctor,” she warned but Dr. Brown cut her off.
“He will find out sooner or later. I am done covering up your mess. I have exhausted my supply of the drugs. I can keep it up for another week or so but she will wake after that.”
My mouth flew to my mouth in shock. It made sense now, they had been keeping her drugged. I made to leave so I wouldn’t be caught but I bumped into a hard chest. I turned to find Kaden standing there and from the look on his face, it was clear that he heard everything.
