AMELIA’S P.O.V
To say that I was the center of attention the entire day would have been an understatement. I was approached by at least four different people at different times of the day wanting to know what was going on between Kaden and I and the strange woman in the hospital. For the most part, I managed to ignore them but it was more exhausting than I realized. It was almost impossible for me to take two steps without being approached by someone. Serena did her best to stay by my side but there was a limit to what she could do.
“How long until school is over?” she whispered as we hid between the shelves in the library. We briefly managed to escape the head of the school newspaper and were counting down the minutes until we would be able to leave school.
“Ten,” I responded as I glanced at my phone. “It is only a matter of time. We can leave soon. Kaden said he would be here to pick me up. I could ask him to drop you off if you’d like.”
She waved me off. “I’m going to see my parents. It is you I am worried about. These people are like vultures.”
I couldn’t stop myself from laughing aloud but I quickly slapped my hand over my mouth to prevent someone finding us. My laughter turned into a giggle and Serena joined in. Soon we were hunched over with our fists in our mouths trying to stay quiet.
The sound of footsteps had us both going quiet. I stilled hoping that it wasn’t anyone who needed me for information. I would have taken someone like Lucy over a journalist. I soon came to regret that prayer because I saw Aiden make his way over to us. It seemed like he hadn’t noticed us yet and Serena and I tried to escape but we quickly came to realize that the only other way out would have been to walk right in between some girls. I didn’t know them but I recognized them from the drama club and it was clear they lived for gossip.
We had only a split second to make a choice. I personally didn’t have an issue with Aiden, I just avoided him but Serena looked like someone had forced her to swallow her own vomit. She wanted to run but even she knew that Aiden was the lesser evil so she stayed put. We turned our attention to the shelves so we would seem busy hoping he would walk away but of course, things couldn’t be that easy because Aiden came to a stop behind us.
“I see the life of a celebrity is exhausting,” he drawled with a pointed look at me. “Everywhere I went today, your name was being mentioned. How does it feel? Judging by the fact that you are here and not with your adoring fans, I would say that it isn’t going well.”
I finally turned to him. “What do you want, Aiden? Why are you always everywhere? Are you stalking me?”
“I’m hurt that you would even come to that conclusion. We go to the same school, Amelia and in case you forgot, I am in the Alpha’s family. I might not be the hot new thing but I know what it is like to have adoring fans,” he said that last part with a pointed look at Serena. “I tend to go to the more quiet places so I can enjoy some peace of mind. It isn’t my fault that Kaden seems to think the same way.”
Serena rolled her eyes but wouldn’t turn to face Aiden. As I looked between them, it became more obvious that whatever was brewing between them had been brewing for a long time. Aiden seemed to enjoy getting a rise out of her and Serena hated him. She wasn’t the friendliest person in the world but she wasn’t hostile. The only person I knew that she outrightly hated was Aiden.
“What do you mean by fans?” I asked and he smirked.
“Why don’t you ask your friend? She knows all about what I am talking about, right, Serena?”
That was enough to make Serena snap. She leaped for him and I barely managed to wrap my arms around her midsection and pull her to a stop. She was furious, her face was a bright shade of red and there were tears in her eyes. I had never seen her like that and the fact that Aiden was watching it with an amused expression was enough to have my insides boiling.
“You are an asshole, Aiden,” I spat and he shrugged. “What is wrong with you? Why would you say something like that?”
“It is true, and she knows it is,” he said simply. He was clearly unaffected by everything that was happening and I knew if he had the opportunity, he would do it again. “There was a time where she followed me everywhere. She was one of my lackeys, was she not? Alas, she decided I was too good for her,” he leaned down until he was staring her straight in the eye, “but she will never forget where she came from.”
There was silence for a second before Serena spat in his face. I was taken aback and so was he because he remained immobile for a second not saying a single word until the corner of his lip quirked up in a smirk. My brows furrowed in confusion as I took in the exchange. It was almost like he got a rise out of pissing her off. I wasn’t sure if that was because he liked her or because he was an asshole.
Before I could ask, I risked a glance at the clock and saw that it was already time. Kaden was probably already outside. I used all my strength to drag Serena out of the library. I ignored the plenty eyes and people were smart enough not to come close once they noticed the murderous look on Serena’s face.
“Are you okay?” I asked her once we were out and she nodded. She didn’t look okay though. “You can tell me the truth. What happened between you and Aiden?”
“it was nothing,” she lied and then her eyes began to water. She buried her face in her hands and I barely had the time to pull her to a more secluded location before she started sobbing. “It’s so insane, I can’t believe I actually used to like him.”
“What happened? How did it end?”
“We all went to the same high school. I wasn’t one of the rich kids but I got a scholarship. Aiden was as close to the Alpha as anyone could get. Everyone knew the Alpha was untouchable but Aiden wasn’t. So many girls tripped over their own feet for him but somehow, he liked me, he chose me. It was like a fairy tale, it continued even after he came to college and I was still in high school. I thought I was in love, I thought we would get mated, until-”
She trailed off as her voice caught in her throat. She wiped her tears furiously and leveled me with a glare so hard that I felt shivers down my spine. It was the kind of look that made grown men piss their pants. If I were Aiden, I would have been terrified because no woman held this kind of anger towards a man for no reason.
“I got pregnant and he told me he didn’t care. He asked me to do whatever I wanted with it because he had a future,” she scoffed. “He had a future but he ruined mine. It doesn’t matter, I guess, I learned from my mistake.”
“What happened to the baby?” I asked and that was enough for her to shut down. She cleared her throat and stood to her feet.
“The Alpha is probably waiting for you. I should be going. Have a good day, Amelia.”
She walked away leaving me staring in complete silence. It took me a full minute before I was able to move my feet again. I was moving on autopilot and I didn’t even notice Kaden until I felt his hands on my shoulders. There was concern in his eyes as he took me in but I didn’t even know how to start explaining what had happened.
“Is something wrong?” he asked and I shook my head. “Do you feel sick? Do you want me to call a doctor?”
“No,” I said immediately and his frown deepened.
“Then what is wrong? I called out to you for over five minutes. I’ve also been waiting her for almost ten. You’re scaring me.”
“I’m fine,” I gave the best smile I could muster. “I have a question though, does Aiden have any children, perhaps children of his own or children that were linked to him in any way.”
Kaden’s brows furrowed and he erupted into a fit of laugher. “The last person on this planet to be a father is Aiden. He hates children, I am sure he would do anything to ensure he would never have kids.” It was sad that he didn’t know how true that was. “Is there a reason you asked? Does he have children?”
“No particular reason,” I said almost too quickly and Kaden narrowed his eyes at me. “I just thought it was weird that he didn’t have any family and he didn’t live in the pack house. I also almost never see him. I thought maybe there was someone else somewhere.”
Kaden shook his head. “Aiden is all alone although I think he prefers it that way. Come on, I need to drop you off at office first.”
I stilled at the handle of the door. “First? Are you going somewhere?”
He couldn’t respond and I immediately knew. I wished I could say that I was unaffected but that wasn’t true. The disappointment burned through me like a fire and I had to blink back to avoid the tears. There were so many people watching us and filming, I didn’t want to give them a show so I simply opened my door and sat down. I heard Kaden curse before he quickly made his way over to the driver side.
“We talked about this, Amelia, we agreed that my afternoons would be spent at the office and at the hospital.”
“I know, I didn’t say a word,” I gave him a smile that felt more like a grimace. “We should start leaving or people are going to wonder.”
“Amelia-”
“Please don’t make this harder than it needs to be,” I cut him off. “I’m never going to stop feeling like this. I am always going to be jealous and you cannot cater to that forever. Just drive, please.”
He sighed but started the car and that was the last I spoke to him.
