AMELIA’S P.O.V
After Aiden left, Kaden and I left the park as well. He had ruined the ambience that came with the date and we decided to call it a night. It was a beautiful day and I was more shocked that Kaden managed to stay off his phone. He didn’t once inch towards it to check his messages. I could have sworn that he would at some point try to get in touch with the hospital. It was like a fever dream and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to wake up from it or stay there forever.
I was so stuffed from the picnic that dinner was out of the option for me. Instead, I decided to focus on some school work that I was running behind on while Kaden handled his usual pack work. We worked in silence in the room, me on the bed and him on the table. There was something calm and comfortable about it, at least until his phone rang. The loud blaring music cut through the air and cast a blanket of unease and trepidation. He glanced at the caller ID before turning to look at me.
We both knew that his next words would either make or break what he had just struggled to achieve. I watched as he disconnected the call. I let out a sigh of relief. I didn’t know why it meant so much to me but for me, it was a sign that he wasn’t going to choose them over me. His phone rang again and he moved to disconnect it.
“Just pick up, they might not stop calling if you don’t,” my voice was soft as I spoke. A part of me didn’t want him to pick up but another part was trying not to feel attached. It was just a stupid call, it wasn’t supposed to be that serious.
“Are you sure?” he asked and I nodded. He let out a sigh before swiping right. “Hello, is everything alright?”
There was silence as whoever was on the other end of the line spoke. I tried to listen in but I couldn’t hear them properly. I wasn’t sure if it was my hearing that wasn’t strong enough or if the person was whispering but with each word they spoke, I saw confliction on Kaden’s face. He opened and closed his mouth a few times as if deciding what to do and I didn’t even realize when I started muttering a prayer under my breath to the goddess.
“I can’t come tonight, just make sure that she is well looked after,” he said finally and my eyes widened. “Some guards will be coming soon to switch shifts with you. I will only be at the hospital during daytime hours. If it is not an emergency, do not call me.”
My mouth was agape like a fish as Kaden spoke. He ended the call and went back to his work but I sat there still staring with wide eyes. It was one thing for me to hope he would do that and it was another for him to actually do it. He had chosen me over her, it was the bare minimum but it was something.
“Thank you,” I whispered softly and he stilled.
“Has it come to that?” he asked and my brows furrowed. He dropped his pen and turned to look at me. His eyes were sad and downcast. “Has it become so bad that you have to thank me for making you a priority?”
“I didn’t-” I began but he cut me off.
“This is no one’s fault but my own. I will make it right, Amelia. I swear to the goddess, I will.”
“I know you will, you already are.”
He shook his head. “I haven’t even started. I have not done nearly enough. I will treat you the way you deserve to be treated. Mark my words about it, Amelia, you will see.”
Without another word, he stood to his feet and I watched him disappear out of the room. I wanted to ask where he was going but my tongue was tied. I just sat there for the next few minutes willing him to return but he didn’t. The front door didn’t open so I knew he was within the house walls but something told me that finding him was not the right course of action so I stayed.
I stayed for hours waiting for him to return. I finished my work and just sat up in bed with my legs pulled up against my chest. I didn’t even realize when I had fallen asleep waiting up. It was warm and callused hands on my skin that woke me up. Kaden was laying me in bed properly and pulling the blanket over my body.
“Kaden,” I began but he shushed me with a soft whisper.
“Sleep, baby, we can talk tomorrow.”
I wanted to protest, I wanted us to talk but I was too tired and sleep overtook me.
I woke up the next morning to the scent of bacon and pancakes. I opened my eyes only to see Kaden standing by the foot of my bed with a tray of breakfast and a single rose by the side. A wide smile pulled at my lips as I took in my mate standing in front of me and looking sheepish.
“I brought you breakfast,” he said dumbly as he placed the tray by me. “You looked so peaceful sleeping that I couldn’t wake you up for training. I knew you would be running a bit late so I decided to make breakfast hoping it would take some time off your-”
“Kaden,” I cut him off and he paused mid rant to take a breath. “Thank you, this is amazing. I don’t care why you did it, I just care that you did. Would you like to eat with me?”
He nodded and disappeared only to return with a tray of his own food. I knew it was incredibly pathetic that I was forgiving him so easily. I had never been one to hold a grudge but with Kaden, it was even harder. It was made worse by the fact that I knew he didn’t mean to hurt me. My wolf trusted him so I did as well, I knew he was desperately trying to make amends and for me, that was the most important thing.
After breakfast, I took the quickest shower known to man so I would make classes early. I was rushing to my car when I noticed Kaden standing by his car with the passenger door open for me. I was torn between getting in and politely refusing. On one hand, he was trying and it would be rude to refuse but on the other hand, I didn’t want a situation where I would be stuck at school and unable to return because he is busy.
“Please, Amelia, allow me make amends,” he whispered and that was my kryptonite. That was what had me getting into the passenger seat despite all the bad experiences. “Tell me what time your classes end, I will be there to pick you up. I want to make things right, not only in private but in public too and that means treating you the way you deserve so the public knows exactly what you mean to me.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I want to, I didn’t realize just how much my actions were affecting you.”
I stilled because I never told him about what was going on at school. “What do you mean?”
“Clara told me that she heard a few people whispering about you in the supermarket. If I come out to say anything, it might look like we are trying to cover things up. I would much rather prove it to them than show them.” I smiled and opened my mouth to thank him but he cut me off. “Please refrain from thanking me, baby.”
I zipped my mouth shut because that was exactly what I was going to do. He placed his hand on my exposed thigh. I was wearing a floral dress that rode up in the car. His hand curled around my bare thigh but he said nothing. The rest of the ride was quiet until we got to school.
All eyes were on us because everyone recognized the Alpha’s car. I could hear the whispers and my heart started to pound in my chest. I wanted them to see us but I was also worried about what could possibly come from it. People were cruel and I had come to realize that the hard way. Kaden must have noticed how worried I was because he grabbed my chin and turned until I was staring into his eyes.
“You will be fine,” it was more of an order than a statement. “Remember who the fuck you are, you are my mate and it might not be official yet but you control each and every single one of them. Their lives are in your hands.”
I shot him a bland look. “That is a gross over statement.”
“No it is not, if you told me to kill everyone here, I would without hesitating. Only after I am done will I ask questions.”
“No one should have that kind of power.”
“You do,” he said without hesitation. “Now go out there and remember that.”
He wrapped his hand into my hair and pulled me in for a dizzying kiss. I didn’t realize that at some point, he had rolled down the windows so people could clearly see what was happening. My toes curled and my back arched as I ached to be closer to him. I couldn’t hear the gasps of shock anymore, my attention was wholly fixed on him. By the time he pulled back, I was breathless and wanting more.
“Have a good day, baby,” he kissed my forehead before opening the door for me. I sat there stunned for another second before I finally got out. “I’ll be back to pick you up once you’re done.”
He winked at me before leaving. The parking lot was silent as if frozen. I could tell that people were unsure of how to react to what they had seen. Before today, the news was that Kaden and I were breaking up because he spent more time at the hospital than at home and now they just watched us practically make out in the parking lot.
My cheeks heated from the attention and I turned on my heels to hurry inside when I bumped into Serena who was smiling wildly.
“How much of that did you see?” I asked and she scoffed.
“Baby girl, the entire school saw the whole thing. I have to admit, that was hot,” I couldn’t stop my blush and she laughed. “I guess this means that you are both good now, right?”
I glanced over my shoulder at the spot Kaden had disappeared through and nodded. “Yeah, we are good.”
