AMELIA’S P.O.V

That sentence broke my heart in more ways than anyone could possibly imagine but I still managed to plaster a smile onto my face. “Give me a minute so I can get dressed. We can go together.”

“You don’t have to come if you don’t want to.”

“If she wakes up then I want to be there.”

He looked like he was itching to leave at that exact moment but he nodded. I made my way up to the room wondering if he was going to leave me if I wasted time getting dressed. It was a theory I wanted to test out but another part of me wanted to get to the hospital as quickly as possible so that I could see for myself what was happening.

By the time I got back down, Kaden was packing impatiently and he muttered under his breath in relief once he saw me. He drove faster than I had ever seen him drive before and as soon as we got to the hospital, he sprinted past me and into the doors. I tried not to let it hurt considering the fact that he had spent the entire night and this morning with me but it still did.

When I got to the room, he was already talking with Dr. Brown and I only managed to catch the end of her sentence. “I didn’t see it happen. A lot happens when people are unconscious.”

“He said that she was mumbling words. That means that she is waking up. Why weren’t you here when it happened? Why didn’t you call me immediately?”

“I was with other patients, Alpha, I am the head healer. I have to make sure that everyone is attended to with the same amount of care and attention.”

“I gave you direct orders-” he began but I rushed over to diffuse the situation.

“Kaden, it is fine, she was busy. You got the call and that is all that matters,” I whispered in his ear and although he didn’t visibly calm down, he took a step back and huffed. I turned to face Dr. Brown. “What is going on with her right now?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t hear her make any noise. The best we can do now is just sit here and monitor her. If she makes any other sudden movements then we can categorize it as her waking up but if she doesn’t then we know that it was just involuntary movement.”

Kaden didn’t seem happy about it but there was nothing he could do. He took the empty seat near Nadine’s bed leaving me to stand behind him. Dr. Brown shot me a sympathetic look but I turned away from her. I didn’t want her pity or anyone else’s. I just wanted to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible. We stayed in Nadine’s room for over two hours and I was bored out of my mind. I had no idea how he managed to do this for days on end but I guessed that he managed because he had something to look out for.

I was about to suggest we leave since nothing was happening when I saw it. it was a slight movement but it was there. Kaden noticed it too because his spine straightened. He turned to me as if to ask if I had seen it as well and I nodded. She moved again and this time, there was a small sound. It was a mix between a groan and a moan.

Everyone turned to her with baited breath waiting to see if she would say something else but she didn’t. It was almost like a fluke and then she went silent. Kaden leaned forward almost eagerly waiting for her to stir but there was nothing. It was like she hadn’t moved at all and if I had come in now, I would never have believed that she even made a sound.

“She must be waking up,” Kaden muttered more to himself than anyone else. “I can’t leave here until she does. The two of you are dismissed.”

I knew he was talking to the guards but I found myself taking a small step back as well. It was a testament to how much Nadine had his attention because he didn’t even realize as I inched out of the room. She had his undivided attention and by the time he finally turned to look at me, I was at the door.

“Amelia,” he began but I shook my head. “Baby, you have to understand. You heard her, you saw her, I cannot miss it when she wakes up.”

I smiled sadly. “I get it but I have no use here. You don’t have to walk me out, I know the way.”

I turned on my heels before he could say another word and made my way out of the hospital. Once I was out in the parking lot, I took my phone out of my pocket and dialed the number I promised myself I never would. The call connected within seconds and there was silence on the other end of the line.

“Where can we meet?” I asked and Aiden chuckled.

“How the mighty have fallen. I thought you said you didn’t need my help Amelia, what happened to that?”

“Don’t make me change my mind.”

“Relax,” he purred. “I’ll send you the co-ordinates, you can meet me there.”

“It has to be a public place.”

“Don’t worry your pretty little head about it.”

He sent me the co=ordinates to a restaurant in the middle of the town. It was packed but as soon as I mentioned my name, I was led to a booth in the back. Aiden was already waiting for me and he had a smug grin on his face.

“I knew you would see the light,” he mused as I took the seat opposite him. “Tell me, Amelia, how can I be of service to you?”

“I need to know who Nadine is. You said that you could help me and for both our sakes, I really hope that you can.”

AIDEN’S P.O.V

Amelia looked so helpless in front of me that it was almost comical. She always had an air of vulnerability around her but today, it was so thick that I felt like I could reach out and take a hold of it. I had not expected her to call me. In fact, I was surprised as hell when I saw her call. I was thinking of a way to get her to me so I could fulfill my plans and she walked right into my arms.

“Before I answer, perhaps we should order,” I waved over a waiter. “I will have two glasses of wine please.”

“A water would be fine for me,” she began but I cut her off.

“Nonsense, two wines- Brian.”

I made a point of touching his name tag and while I did that, I slipped a note into his pocket. I knew Brian from college and I also knew that he had a gambling problem. There was a reason I chose this restaurant and it was because I needed men that I could blackmail into slipping things into drinks without them wanting to rat me out.

Brian disappeared soon after and I turned to Amelia who looked like she wanted to be anywhere but with me.

“Start talking, Aiden,” she pressed and I let out a long and exasperated sigh.

“Nadine is Kaden’s first mate.”

“Marjorie said she wasn’t.”

“Do you really believe Marjorie?” I shot back and she went silent. “My aunt will say anything to protect her precious son. Think about it, Amelia, my aunt hates you and all of a sudden she is pushing you and Kaden to be with each other. There is only one logical explanation for that.”

It was a risky card to play especially since I wasn’t sure if I was right. I had my suspicions but there was no way to know if they were true and if Marjorie said she wasn’t his mate then she wasn’t but there was no reason that Amelia had to know that. I could tell from her expression that she was seriously considering everything that I had said.

“I heard that Kaden had a mate, I don’t know the story of what happened to her but things ended badly. I heard my aunt talk about it once but she never addressed it again and I never asked.”

“Why would she lie to me?”

“Maybe she was scared that if she said the truth then you would leave Kaden,” I offered up with a shrug. “It is my aunt, you never know what she is planning.”

Amelia looked betrayed. “Excuse me, I need a second.”

She stood to her feet and walked into the bathroom brushing Brian on her way. Brian shot me a glare that informed me that he had seen my note but he knew better than to say anything. He dropped the glasses harder than necessary and as soon as he was gone, I picked up my phone and dialed a number.

“Why are you calling me?” he asked as soon as he picked up. “I am the one who initiates contact.”

“I have her where we want her. I can give her a pill now that will knock her out. I will bring her to you and you can deliver the killing blow.”

“Are you mad?” he spat. “I don’t sit around all day waiting for you to tell me what you have planned. I have things to do and before you bring her to me, she will be found out. I also do not feel like revealing my identity just yet. If you cannot find a way to kill her on your own then abort that mission. If you are caught then it will be your head on the block and not mine.”

“But-”

“I am done with this Aiden. I asked for results and not for disappointment. “Fix up your act.”

He hung up and anger burned through me. I downed my drink and glanced at Amelia’s sitting on the table. She hadn’t returned yet and I was grateful for it because I pushed her glass to the floor and watched it shatter on the ground as the red liquid spilled out. Brian rushed out and immediately started gathering up the pieces.

I leaned down until my mouth was by his ear. “If you tell anyone about that note, I will deny you. The way I see it, you tried to poison the Luna.”

“The note was in your handwriting.”

“You burned it, did you not?” he gritted his teeth in response. “I am glad we were able to come to an agreement,”

I took out a hundred dollar bill and placed it on the table.

Amelia was safe for today but it meant I had to go back to the drawing board. I wasn’t going to disappoint gain.
