KADEN’S P.O.V

The conversation with my mother left a sour taste in my mouth for the rest of the day. I wasn’t sure why I expected anything less from her but I guess a part of me hoped that when faced with the reality of the situation then she would be forced to tell me the truth about everything but she was even more tight lipped than usual. I told her I was getting my memories back and she didn’t even seem to care. She was adamant that I threw Nadine out but there was no way I was going to do that when she was the only person excluding my mother who could have an idea of what happened to me.

“Do you not think it is weird?” I heard a voice from behind me and I nearly jumped but relaxed slightly when I saw Dr. Brown. “You just remembered her face two days ago and now she is here. I think it is suspicious.”

“It might just be a coincidence.”

“In my line of work, I have learned that there is no such thing as that,” she walked further into the room and began looking over Nadine and her charts. “I think your mother has a right to be worried. She might not be telling you everything but she cares for you, Alpha.”

“You called her, didn’t you?” I deduced and although she stayed silent, I knew the answer. “The only reason you are still in this pack is because of me, Dr. Brown. If you ever pull a stunt like that again, I will make sure that you are thrown out with nothing but the clothes on your back. Am I clear?”

“Of course,” she bowed. “I offer my sincerest apologies for crossing the line. You can be rest assured that it would never happen again.”

“It better not. How is she?”

“I don’t know. There seems to be nothing wrong with her. It is almost as if her body just slipped into a coma. Everything is working fine and I expect that she should wake up in a few days if everything goes as planned. In these cases, it is almost impossible to predict how things might go.”

“There is no possibility of her waking up today, is there?” she shook her head. “Okay then, I will send some guards to keep watch in her room. If anything changes, I want to be called immediately. I don’t care if it is three in the morning. Am I clear?”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Once I was sure that she understood what I was saying, I stood to my feet and left. A part of me didn’t want to leave yet but I figured I had other things to handle. It wasn’t until I got outside that I realized that I hadn’t seen Amelia since my discussion with my mother. I tried to mind link her but her wall was firmly in place. I tried her phone too but I didn’t get a response. I looked around and noticed that her car was gone too and I couldn’t help but wonder when she left.

I drove home but her car wasn’t in the driveway and that was when I began to panic. I tried her number again but I still got no answer so I tried Clara next. If there was anyone who would know where she was then it was Clara. Clara picked up her phone on the third ring.

“Is Amelia with you?” I asked and she was silent on the other end of the phone. “It is a simple question, Clara, one that requires a simple answer as well.”

“I haven’t seen her since this morning. Is she missing?”

“No, I just didn’t find her at home. Did she tell you where she was going when she left you this morning?”

“She said that she was coming to speak to you. I can try calling her if you want but I don’t know.”

I let out a frustrated sound. I didn’t know how it was possible for an entire human to go missing. I was about to say something to Clara when I heard the front door. I saw Amelia walking in and I let out a sigh of relief.

“Don’t worry, she just walked in,” I hung up before Clara could say anything and instantly turned to Amelia. “Where have you been? I have been trying to call and mind link you all day.”

Instead of responding to me, she just shrugged and made to walk past me. I wasn’t going to let that conversation just drop when she had me panicked over her for the past half an hour. I followed her to our room and blocked her pathway inside.

“Please, Kaden, I don’t have the energy for this.”

“What makes you think that I do? I have been searching for you. I called you and you didn’t respond.”

“When did you realize I was gone?” she asked and I stared at her in confusion. “You said I made you worried, right? When did you notice that I had left? How long ago did you start looking for me? You didn’t start calling until about forty minutes ago so I assume that is when you noticed. Am I right?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“I left the hospital over five hours ago. You didn’t even notice that I was gone. Do you really expect me to sit here and answer your questions when you were more focused about some rogue than you wee on me? I could have been kidnapped, I could have run away. So much could have happened and you wouldn’t have noticed.”

“You’re being dramatic.”

“No, I’m just done with all of this, Kaden. First you’re mentioning some girl in your sleep and now she is on our doorstep. I don’t know about you but that isn’t normal. This isn’t how things are supposed to be and I am just tired of doing this with you. I don’t have the energy for it. Do whatever you want.”

She brushed past me and I just stood there staring at where she had been. It took me a few minutes to gather my bearings and rush over to her in the room. She was already changing into her night gown and while I could have stopped to stare and admire how unbelievably sexy she was, there was more at play here.

I shut the door quietly behind me. “This isn’t how things are supposed to be done. If there is a problem then we should talk about it. That is how relationships work.”

“I wanted to talk throughout today but you were just busy.”

“I’m not busy now,” no sooner than I said that, my phone rang and I saw Dr. Brown’s name on the screen. Amelia tracked my movements and scoffed.

“It is about her, isn’t it?” she asked but I couldn’t answer. “I know you want to go and be there so go. I have nothing that I want to say to you regarding it.”

“Nadine is important to me because I don’t know who she is.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Most of my eighteenth year is a blur. I cannot remember anything. Dr. Brown and I have been working to get my memory back and the only thing I can remember is Nadine. She is the key to all of this and I need to know.”

“Is it worth it?” her eyes burned as she spoke. “At the end of the day, when you ruin us, is it going to be worth it?’

Dr. Brown called again and I shot Amelia a sad look. “I have to go. We will talk about it later, I promise.”

“Don’t bother, I’m done with it,” she turned on her heels and ignored me.

If I were a better man, I would have stayed with her, I would have comforted her and done everything I could to make her feel better but I couldn’t. I was a coward and so I turned on my heels and left for the hospital. I felt bad about it while driving but I still couldn’t turn back to the house. I needed to know the truth. I had spent so long not knowing and I would be damned if I let anyone hide the truth from me ever again.

By the time I got to the hospital, Dr. Brown was waiting for me in front of Nadine’s room. She looked a little disappointed that I had come, almost as if she were expecting me to stay back.

“Is she awake?” I asked and she shook her head.

“I noticed something unusual in her toxicology report. There were traces of wolf’s bane and something else that is unfamiliar. I don’t know what it is but it seems to be some sort of drug. I am running more tests on it but it seems like her coma is as a result of whatever drug is in her system.”

“Can you get it out of her?”

“Her body is already expelling it. I think there will be positive news soon because I saw her hand twitch. She might be awake within the next forty eight hours. If you had just picked up, Alpha, I could have told you this over the phone. There was no need to come.”

“I’m here now, I might as well just stay here with her overnight.”

“I don’t think that is necessary. She has doctors watching over her at every turn.”

“It is a good thing I didn’t ask your opinion then.”

She took that as the dismissal that it was and bowed. I watched her walk away without another word. Just as I was about to go into the room however, I heard someone walk up behind me. I knew who it was before I even turned and I sighed. I felt Caleb’s presence get closer but he didn’t say a word and I decided I wasn’t going to break the silence first.

I made my way into Nadine’s room and sat by her bed and Caleb followed. He looked at her for a full minute before speaking.

“Is she worth all of this?” I couldn’t help but realize that he had used the exact same words that Amelia had. “Is this strange girl worth losing the best thing that has ever happened to you?”

“Go straight to the point, Caleb, I don’t like games. You of all people should know that.”

“Amelia called crying, did you know that?” he asked and I froze.

I wanted to rush back and be with my mate but I also wanted to get to the bottom of this. I hated the point I was at right now because it was my life against her. Nadine held answers that I needed and I would have hoped that Amelia of all people would understand.

“She knows that I had to leave.”

“Is that the truth or is that what you told yourself to feel better about leaving her?” I didn’t respond to him. “Listen, Kaden, I can’t force you back home. What I can tell you is that Amelia is the greatest thing in your life right now and you are going to lose her. Think about it and figure out what is important.”

“I need to know what happened.”

He let put a sound that was a mixture between a scoff and a sigh of defeat. “Well then, I hope the knowledge is enough to keep you happy for the rest of your life.”
