AMELIA’S P.O.V

Kaden kept his arms around me as he made a quick call to his receptionist and asked her to get some food for us. I couldn’t help but wonder why he didn’t just mind link her especially when she had to call to confirm what drink I wanted with my food. I kept my questionto myself because I didn’t want to seem too inquisitive but whenshe walked into the office and smiled softly at me as she placed the plastic bags on the table, I couldn’t help but turn to Kaden.

I waited until the door had shut behind me before I spoke. “Why don’t you mind link people?I have only seen you use it with Caleb. Don’t they know how to?”

“They do but they can’t because they don’t have access to my link.”

My brows furrowed in confusion. I cocked my head to the side but Kaden didn’t pay heed to me, he was more interested in making sure that his secretary had gotten everything he asked. I remembered him giving me access to his link so easily and I thought it was like that with everyone else.

“I have it,” I muttered blindly and he finally looked up at me. “I was a stranger in your pack. Why would I have it and not her? It doesn’t make any sense.”

“You were never just a stranger to me,” his voice was soft. “Since the moment I met you,I knew who you were. You may not have realized it but I did. No one has more right to my link than you do- not even Caleb.”

I didn’t know what to say and thankfully, I was saved from having to respond because Kaden pushed a plate of food closer to me. It was creamy pasta and the aroma alone had my stomach grumbling. I took a bite and nearly moaned. I could see Kaden smile with pride as he watched me eat. He had gotten a plate for himself but he barely paid attention to it. It should have been uncomfortable how much attention he was showering on me but I found it endearing.

I loved how something as simple as eating could grasp his attention so easily and I fluttered under his gaze. Kaden asked about my day but when he realized that I was not willing to talk yet, he told me about his own. I listened intently and I was so enamored by what he was saying. A loud crash dragged my attention and I jumped as I glanced towards the door.

Kaden’s door was sound proof so whatever made that sound had to be loud. I hesitantly stood to my feet and Kaden gestured for me to stay still but I wasn’t known for listening and I followed behind me. When he noticed me, he shot me a hard look but I stood my ground and refused to let that deter me.

“I need you to stay here,” he enforced but I shook my head. “Amelia, now is not the time to be stubborn.”

“Youcan either take me with you or I will sneak out to see it.”

He raised a brow and it took everything in me not to cower. He was scary without even trying. I began to wonder if pushing was the wrong thing and I took a hesitant step backwards when he finally muttered a small curse under his breath.

“Stay close to me at all times.”

We walked out of his officeto an empty hallway. We had gotten to the stairs when his secretary returned. She was shaking her head and muttering words under her breath but she stopped when she saw us.

“What happened?” I was sure Kaden didn’t mean to be harsh but his voice came out cold and detached. I saw her swallow deeply as she thought of her next words wisely.

“It was Lucy.”

LUCY’S P.O.V

If there was one thing that I knew for certain, it was that I hated Amelia. I couldn’t understand how Kaden could leave someone like me for someone like her. I was perfect in every way that mattered and she looked like a child. When I got the picture of them on their romantic date, I thought it was photoshopped but I got the rude awakening that it wasn’t. They were smiling and he was looking at her in a way that he never looked at me.

I kept telling myself it was an accident and I was determined to keep my cool until I saw Kaden personally after school but seeing her in the cafeteria lapping up all that attention did something to me and I couldn’t stop myself from going over to her and putting her in her place.I wanted to make her feel a fraction of the embarrassmentthat I felt when I saw those pictures and when she spoke back, I was determined to make sure that I ruined her life.

After school, I saw Caleb in the parking lot and I knew he was there for her. I had to leave because I couldn’t stand to watch it but as soon as everyone was gone, I got into the car and drove to theoffice. I needed to talkto Kaden and I needed him to tell me that it was all a mistake.

When I got to the door, I was blocked by the guard and I raised a brow. “Move out of my way.”

“Do you have an appointment?” he asked and I flashed my card at him. He looked like he wanted to say something but decided to stay silent instead. I pushed past him and swiped my card but to my shock and horror, it was declined.

“What the fuck?” I spat as I tried again but it showed the same red light. “What did you do to my card, you bastard? I use this card to walk into this building every day. Are you kidding me?”

“It looks like your card has been disabled,” he reached out to swipe it out of my hands. “If you would kindly step away from the door so others can walk in.”

He reached out for me but I pushed him away. “No.”

In my effort to push him off, he pushed over a large vase and the shattering sound was so loud that I was sure the people in the next building heard it. The guard was pissed but I didn’t care. I deserved to be in that office and I needed to see Kaden. I saw Kaden’s secretary whose name I never bothered to learn peek through the doors but I ignored her.

“Ma’am, this is your last chance to leave peacefully,” the guard’s voice had dropped an octave and there was a warning in them.

“I am going to be your Luna, you better show me the respect that I deserve.”

“Until you get the title, you will get nothing from me,” his eyes glossed over and I knew he was contacting the other security men. “You are causing a scene.”

I reached out and slapped him across the face. My hand left a bright pink mark and I felt a sense of pride fill me but it was gone when I felt hands wrap around my upper arm. I tried to fight them off but they grabbed me and dragged me further away from the door. The door to the office opened and when Kaden walked out, pride filled me because I thought he came for me but then she stepped out beside him.

He had his hand on the small of her back and he was holding her the way he should have been holding me. He didn’t even look at me as he spoke. “If she ever comes near here again, throw her out. She is no longer welcome.”

The shock did not leave my face evenafter I was unceremoniously dumped outside the office and in front of my car. I was stunned that Kaden spoke about me like that in the presence of other people. I immediately fished out his phone and dialed his mother’s number. She hadn’t spoken to me since I told her that he kicked me out of the house which was unusualfor her.

The first two calls rang and went to voicemail but on the third, it kept repeating number busy and I knew that she had blocked me. I was so furious that I threw my phone as far as it would go and let out a scream. I was Lucy Brennan;men went on their knees to get a sight of me and Kaden had thrown me out like I was yesterday’s trash. I was furious.

I stormed into my car and drove without thinking. I didn’t even realize when I ended up in front of a bar but I knew it was where I needed to be. I walked in not caring how out of place I looked in my designer outfit and I took a seat at the grimy bar. I saw the bartender run his eyes downmy body and linger on my chest. I snapped my fingers in his face.

“My eyes are up here asshole.”

“I wasn’t looking at your eyes.”

On another day, I would have fought with him but I rolled my eyes. “Vodka, now.”

He mimicked a salute and brought my drink. As he settled it in front of me, I briefly debated my course of actions. I was all alone for the first time in my life with no one by my side. Kaden was the only reason I was in this pack and for a second, I thought that I was making headway with him. I realized that I had nothing to lose so I took the shot and snapped my fingers to get the attention of the bartender.

“Give me something stronger,” I told him. I wasn’t leaving the bar until I was black out drunk and could not feel my own face.

He smirked and I knew what he was thinking. He probably thought that if I was inebriated then I wouldn’tbe able to defend myself. He was more than welcome to test out the theory. As he set down my second drink, he gave me a not-so-subtlewink that I ignored.

I was about to take it when I felt a presence behind me along with a drawl. “I never thought I would see the day. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.”

I ignored the unwanted guest and reached out for my drink but he snatched it out of my hand. I wanted to insult him but I knew that was what he wanted so I stayed silent.

“I should have known that you would be here. You always seem to gravitate to places of suffering and pain.”

“That’s bold coming from the person who is trying to drink themselves to a stupor,” he took the seat next to me and downed my drink. “Tell me, Lucy, what brings you to my domain?”
