KADEN’S P.O.V

I made sure the door was locked before I took a seat. The last thing I needed was someone walking in and overhearing something that they didn’t need to. I knew the healer since I was a child, she was the one who delivered me and she was the first tobe called whenever there was an emergency. I never bothered to learn her first nameand she never offered, I always referred to her as Dr. Brown. She had always been kind and softspokenbut she could also be fierce when she needed to be.

Most people were scared of me but she had never looked at me as anything other than her patient. She regarded me with the same soft and cool tones she reserved for her patients. Although she gave me the respect that came with my title, that was where it ended. I never got specialtreatment from her and for some reason, I liked it.

“I don’t where to start,” for the first time, she sounded unsure. “If I talk to you, I need a promise that your mother will not come for me. She made me swear that I would never speak to you about it and if she finds out that I broke that promise then-”

“I am your Alpha, do you really fear my mother over me? She cannot do anything in this pack without my approval. I am the one who can take your job away in an instant.”

“This is not about who is more powerful. This is about my word that I gave. My word and reputation arelike gold in this profession. If it gets out that I broke client confidentialitythen I will never get a job in my life.”

I ran my hands down my face feeling frustrated thatmy mother was once again making things more complex than they needed to be. “She will not find out, you have my word on it.”

She sighed out of relief and unlocked her bottom drawer. She pulled out a file and I couldn’t help but wonder if there were some more files sitting there that were supposed to remain secrets. I could have asked but I was more concerned with my business andleaving so I could spend the rest of my day on the phone with Amelia.

“I didn’t know much from the beginning but it has been a few years and my memory might be a little hazy,” she began slowly. “Your mother called for me late one evening and told me that something terrible had happened to you. She never explained to me what happened and as part of my deal, I was not supposed to ask. All that I knew was that you were dying and it wasn’t from any physical factors. That was one of the most challenging things I ever had to do in my life.”

“What do you mean by physical factors?”

“There was no poison in your system, you were not hurt in any way. There was no physical indication that anything was wrong.”

I was annoyed that she couldn’t offer more. My first thought was that she was hiding the truth but I knew that she had nothing to lose by lying to me. I analyzed her just to be on the safe side and I saw no hint of dishonesty in her eyes. She pushed the file towards me as if asking me to check for myself and I did. I flipped through the pages and all I saw were details of my health and how my organs were shutting down and deteriorating.

“Why don’t I remember any of this?” I askedbecause according to the file, I was around eighteen when it happened. I couldn’t remember much from the eighteenth year of my life save for the fact that it was filled with a lot of late nights and drinking with Caleb. “Shouldn’t I remember this?”

“You should but when you woke up, you didn’t remember anything. I told your mother that your memories were going to come back on their own but she said she would do everything in her power to make sure they didn’t. I didn’t ask any questions because I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.”

I ran my hands down my face. “What do you think, Dr. Brown?” I asked. “If I were to ask you, what would you say had happened to me?”

“I don’t know,” she answered honestly. “I had never seen a case like yours before and till today, I haven’t seen one. The closest I ever heard your mother come to saying what had happened was when she said that she was going to make sure you never lost again in your life.”

“What did she mean by that?”

“I don’t know.”

I knew she had given me everything she had so I stood to my feet. “Can I keep the file?” she nodded and I tucked it under my armpit. “Thank you for your time, Dr. Brown.”

I turned on my heels without waiting for a response from her and walked out of the office. I dropped the file in my glove compartment and began the drive home. The entire way, I couldn’t help but wonder what my mother could have meant by ‘lost’. Was it losing something that made that happen? I had never heard of loss that could make a person physically ill.

I got to my house but I couldn’t get out of my car because I was still confused on what was happening and I wanted to find out before I got out of the car. I pulled down the wall separating my wolf and I.

“What do you think?”I asked and I could feel him stir anxiously in my head.

“I don’t know,” it was weird for him to be silent on a matter. “For loss to do that to a person then it has to be something of great value or importance. It could explain why your mother is against you getting a mate. If losing someone of importance could take you the brink of death then she would be skeptical because losing your mate can kill you.”

“Should I talk to her about it?” I asked but he shook his head furiously.

“If you do then you have to explain how you found out and you gave Dr. Brown your word,” I cursed because I realized that he was right. “If we are going to find out the truth then we need to do it on our terms.”

“Okay, but we can start tomorrow. I need to talk to my mate.”

BLAKE’S P.O.V

Ever since I saw and almost kissed Amelia, I had been eager to see her again. Gregory had asked questions about where I disappeared to and I fed him some bullshit lie about wandering off with the other soldiers and because he couldn’t bear to think that his life was less than perfect- he believed me. I could only imagine how he would react if he found out Amelia was alive.

It took everything in me to not tell him and there were two reasons I didn’t. The first was because I knew that he would do his best to kill her and I wanted her alive. The second was because I wanted to make sure that whatever spell that Alpha had on her was broken. It didn’t take a genius to know that they were hooking up because her scent was all over him and she kept glancing at him for approval. It was almost like she craved it.

“Blake,” my voice was whispered harshly and I followed it towards the darkened corner of the alley behind the pack house.

Jamalwas waiting there for me. I wouldn’t refer to Jamal as my friend but he served a purpose and we had similar views and standpoints. We wanted the same thing and we were willing to tolerate each other for as long as we needed to getto our endgame. He had dark skin and curly black hair that settled in a mop atop his head.

“What do you want?” my response was equally as harsh. “You know that I can’t leave the pack house at weird hours or they will begin to suspect.”

“I spoke with the men,” I stopped as soon as I heard that, I froze- he already had my attention. “The men are willing to follow you but you need a legitimate claim to the throne. They cannot follow a blind man. Find a way to make Gregory name you as heir or find a way to get it through Brittany. When you have that settled then you can find us.”

“That might take some time.”

“Time is the one thing that we don’t have, Alpha,”he sneered the last word as a jab and he left me in the darkened alley.

By the time I got back to the pack house, I was already in a shitty mood. There was no way Gregory was going to do as we wanted as Brittany was equally as dense. I was infuriated and the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to punch something or someone.

I was returning to my room with the intention to sulk when I got an idea. I passed by a flyer from the official pack decorators. I dialed the number there and waited until they picked up. If I wanted a faster response, I would have called them with the pack line but I didn’t want to risk anyone finding out.

They finally picked up. “How can we help you today?”

“I need to organize a surprise party for my girlfriend.”

I made sure to keep my real name out of the order and I quickly told them what I had planned. I had just hungup the call when I felt a presence behind me. I turned to see Brittany standing there and I was filled with anger at the possibility of her hearing me.

“Why would you sneak up on me like that? Do you think it is cute?” the bitterness in my voice had her pausing.

“I was just trying to be nice.”

She reached out for me but I pushed her away. “Don’t touch me, I have somewhere to be.”

“Why are you being like this? I’m trying to make it up to you, Blake.”

“If you want to make it up to me then keep your schedule clear. We have a date in a while.”

“What is it about? How do I dress? Is it in a restaurant? I have this new dress that I just bought. I was planning on modeling it for you but I can keep it for the date,” she looked excited but instead of responding, I pushed her aside and walked away.

“I don’t give a shit what you wear, just be there when I say you should.”

It was better if she remained curious.
