KADEN’S P.O.V

Having to leave Amelia alone in bed was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I could still taste her on my lips and I wanted nothing smore than to wake her up with my tongue slowly moving inside of her. I wanted to hear her soft mewls of pleasure as she writhed against my face.

She was lying so peacefully against my chest and she molded so perfectly into me like she was made for me. I wanted nothing more than to stay there and if I had died in that moment, I would have died a happy man but unfortunately, I was Alpha and I had some things that needed my attention. I didn’t want her to feel like I just left so I dropped the note and sent her a message.

I wanted to make it up to her so I planned a date for us in the afternoon however, there were some things I needed to do first. My mother was not answering my messages about her cryptic message in my office so I decided to do my own investigation. There were few people who would know what my mother was talking about and those were the elders who resided in the private parts of the libraries. That part was forbidden to anyone who was not a member of the Alpha’s family and the only way anyone could get in was with an accesscard that could only be granted by the Alpha.

It was old and dusty with books that were thick enough to give anyone a heart attack fromsight alone. It was quiet and dreary but I ignored the harsh wind and made my way to the backwhere the elders stayed. There were three out of the five of them present. In total there were three males and two females but both females were missing. They were the oldest and smartest people in the pack. The youngest of them was almost in her fifties.

“When we received your request, we were shocked to say the least, Alpha,” one of them said as they all bowed in respect. “Please, tell us how we might be of service.”

“I want to know about something that happened to me a while ago,” they cast a wary glance between themselves. “My mother is against the idea of me having a mate and she said it wasbecause she didn’t want to go down that path again What path is she talking about?”

“Alpha, I am afraid that you should ask your mother. Could it be possible that she was not referring to you? A mother’s worry is a complex thing.”

“Don’t insult my intelligence,” I cut him off and he fell silent almost immediately. “You are here out of my benevolence. If I suddenly saw no use for any of you then you would cease to be elders immediately.”

I made sure my threat hung in the air and I watched as fear consumed them. To be stripped of your title as an elder was considered shameful. They could no longer stay in the pack as normal citizens. They had to startafresh in a new pack and if they were unable to then they became rogues. It was not a life that anyone wanted to be subject to.

“Part of your job is to record the life of every Alphafor the history books. I know that my life actions have been recorded since the day I was born so I will ask one more time. What was my mother talking about?”

There was a collective swallow. The fear was palpable in the room and I knew it was only a second before they would break. The one who welcomed me sat up and cleared his throat. “There was an incident when you were younger. Unfortunately we don’t know much about it because your mother refused for us to record it. She said that it was never to get out. All we know is that it involved the pack healer. If you want answers then you are more likely to get them from her.”

“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” I stood to my feet and started to leave but I stopped at the door. “If any of this gets back to my mother, I will make sure that no pack in the world welcomes you. I will brand you as traitors so bad that even the rogues will hunt you. Am I clear?”

“Yes, Alpha.”

As soonas I had settled that, I glanced at my watch and cursed. I had organized a dinner with Amelia and it was to start in forty-fiveminutes. There was no way I was going to be able to see the healer, pick her up and make it to the dinner in time. I sent a quick text to Caleb asking him to pick her up and make sure her car got home. Once that was settled, I drove to the flower shop.

Amelia arrived in Caleb’s car just in time. I watched as she got out and my eyes couldn’t stay in one spot for too long. She was wearing a beautiful sundressthat stopped mid-thigh and showed off her gorgeous legs. Her hair was tied up with a bow and she paired it with boots. She looked gorgeous and there was nothing I wanted more than to pull her into my arms and kiss her but I could tell that she was a bit uncomfortable so I held back.

“Kaden, what is this?” she asked as she got closer and I took out the bouquet of flowers I hid behind my back and handed them over to her. Her eyes widened and softened as she took it from me. “This is beautiful.”

I saw Caleb leave out of the corner of my eye and I placed a hand at her back. “Come, we have an appointment.”

I saw her eyes widen as she took in the interior of the restaurant. It was all tiles with crystal chandeliershanging from every inch of the ceiling, a grand piano at a corner playing soft music and beautiful flowers adorning the tables. A waiter came up to us and led us towards the private sitting area that I had rented out for both of us. I knew that Amelia would be uncomfortable with too many people so I made sure we had as much privacy as possible.

“This is amazing,” Amelia whispered as if she were scared of speaking too loud. “You didn’t have to do this. We could have just gotten lunch somewhere else. I’m not even dressed appropriately.”

“You look breathtaking,” I assured her and her cheeks heated up. “It doesn’t matter how dressed up anyone else is, you are easily the most gorgeous person here.”

She was saved from repsonding when a waiter came to take our order. I could tell that she was flustered and did not know what to order so I suggested my favorite meal to her. She shot me a grateful look and ordered exactly that.

“Do you come here often?” she asked and I shrugged.

“I used to with my mother until I became too busy with my duties,” at the mention of my mother, her face fell. “My mother will be fine. She will support us whether she likes it or not. She knows who you are to me and she knows that I will not be with anyone else.”

“I just don’t want you to fight with her.”

“I won’t, you do not have to worry about that. This is our date, don’t allow anything disturb that, okay?” she nodded and I smiled and placed a kiss on the back of her palm. “Good, because I want to show you off.”

Lunch was amazing. It had been a long time since I had lunch with someone and actually enjoyed it. Mother had filled my lunches with women I didn’t know or didn’t care to be around. This was the first time in a long time that I initiated the dinner and I didn’t want to leave. Amelia was smart and she spoke with such grace. Even her smile had something foreign beating in my chest. She wasclutching the flowers to her chest like a prized possession and I couldn’t help the sense of pride that I was the one who gave it to her.

When dinner was over, I clutched her hand not willing to let her go. When I opened the car door for her, she giggled and I wanted to bottle up that sound and play it over again on my worst days. I drove as slow as possible hoping that I wouldn’t have to get to Caleb’s house but the ride still felt too short.

“I had fun,” she told me as I parked in front of the house. “I would really like to do that again.”

“That can easily be arranged,” she bit her bottom lip and before she could psych herself out, she leaned forward and kissed me. It was a small peck and she pulled away before I could deepen it.

“Bye, Kaden.”

I watched her get out of the car and disappear into the house and I let her because I knew that if I had held her back, I wouldn’t have stopped until I was inside her. That small peck had me hard as rock in my pants and I had to think about my meeting with the pack healer to calm down.

It felt like a downturn of events to go from a date with Amelia to a meeting with the healer. If I had my way, I would have ended my day after that date to ensure that the day ended on a high note but I couldn’t. I made my way into the pack hospital and I didn’t need to stop to introduce myself. The nurses were too frightened to speak to me so I just walked right into the healer’s office.

She was an older woman with greying brown hair and kind eyes but she was in a conversation with someone else when I walked in. Something in her eyes must have told her that I was here for important business because she cleared her throat and turned to her current client with a smile.

“We can finish this later, just take your pills as instructed and everything should be fine.”The client nodded and all but rushed out of the room as if he couldn’t bear to be there for a second longer. As soon as the door shut, she turned to me. “What can I do for you, Alpha?”

“What happened to me?” I asked and her brows scrunched in confusion. “What did my mother make you bury?”

Understanding filled her features before she schooled it into a mask. “You might want to sit down, Alpha, it is a long story.”
