AMELIA’S P.O.V
I read the words over and over again hoping that it would change. I thought that maybe I was the one having troubles seeing but it never changed. His name was written in perfect cursive at the bottom and I felt my heart lurch in my chest.
As much as I hated to admit it, there was still a part of me that felt for Blake. I hated the way my heart skipped a beat and seeing this letter had just turned my storm of a day into a hurricane. I didn’t know how he managed to get a letter to me in Kaden’s pack but I knew that if Kaden found out he would be furious. I was confused about what to do or where to go. On one hand I wanted to treasure the letter but on the other, I wanted to throw it into the trash and pretend like I had never seen it.
Clara returned at that exact moment with some concealer in her hands and her brows rose as she took in the flowers. “Are those from Kaden? I would have expected him to send you daisies or something. I never pegged him as a rose guy.”
“They’re not from him.”
There was no use lying to Clara. She would have found out sooner or later that they weren’t from Kaden. I didn’t need to tell her who it was from because awareness settled on her features. She placed the concealer on the table next to us and crossed her arms over her shoulder.
“Is he here in the pack?” she asked and I shrugged. “We need to tell Kaden about this.”
“No,” my response was quick. “He doesn’t need to know. I’m not responding to his letter or his flowers.”
I thought back at how beautiful the letter was. It was short but the main summary of it was that he missed me and could not wait to see me. There was no way for Blake to see me again save for sneaking into the pack and I knew that Kaden probably had his men scouring for Blake. He would die the moment he set foot into the pack and he knew it too. He would never risk that.
“Let it be known that I was firmly against this,” Clara began just as there was another knock on the door. She went to inspect and she turned to me sharply. “It is Kaden.”
I glanced at the incriminating flowers in my hands and quickly ushered her over so I could place them in her arms. She stared at them like they were a ticking time bomb or a disgusting box.
“Please keep them with you,” I begged. “He might come into my room and if he sees them there he will find out. I have never begged you for anything before, Clara.”
She looked like she wanted to refuse but at the last moment, she turned on her heels and took them to her room. I exhaled deeply and pulled the door open for Kaden. He offered me small smile and I all but dragged him into the house. I didn’t want to risk someone seeing him and getting back to Lucy on it.
“I know I’m not supposed to be here, but I needed to see you,” he began as he took a seat on the couch. “Why does it smell like flowers?”
“It’s a new perfume that Clara is trying on,” I blurted out and he hummed. I made my way over to him and sat beside him. “I’m glad you’re here. How are you?”
“I’m good, I wanted to give you an offer,” I was intrigued so I hummed. “I was thinking that maybe you could work at my office. It would be a good idea for us to spend some time together.”
“I would love that but we can’t. Lucy works there too and she will get suspicious. I don’t want any trouble, Kaden.”
He let out a sigh and muttered a curse under his breath. He knew I was right. He ran his hands down his face in what was obvious frustration and I understood why. It was difficult running around and I hated it but it was necessary for the time being. There were too many things standing in the way of us and Lucy was just the tip of the iceberg.
“I want to see you every day,” he mumbled making me laugh softly. “I will make things right. You deserve to be treated like a Queen and not like a dirty little secret. I hate that I have to hide you from everyone.”
I reached out for his hand and intertwined our fingers. “It is just a matter of time. I can handle it for now.”
He leaned down to press a kiss to the back of my hand but he froze. In my bid to comfort him, I had reached out with the hand that Lucy had grabbed and the bruise was stark against my fair skin. Kaden let out a growl deep in his chest. I tried to pull my hand away but he didn’t let me.
“Who did this to you?” his voice was cold and harsh which was a direct contrast to how softly he was stroking my skin.
“It doesn’t matter. It was just an accident.”
“An accident,” he rolled the words over his tongue as if testing them and I knew he didn’t believe me. “Tell me who accidentally did this to you. I won’t hurt them or anything, I just want to talk.”
“You can’t do that, Kaden. Please, just drop it. I don’t want to discuss it anymore.”
“Was it Aiden?” the anger in his voice could barely be constrained and my eyes widened. I didn’t want him hurting innocent people.
“It was Lucy. I promise that it is not what you think. Please don’t make a big deal out of this.”
He leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to my lips once then twice. When he pulled back, his eyes were as cold as ice and he smiled softly at me. He stood to his feet immediately and started in the direction of the door but I rushed out to stand in his way. I was utterly terrified to be standing in front of a raging Alpha.
He could hurt me and it would be my fault but I couldn’t bring myself to move. If we went out with his anger, he risked doing something he would regret and I was willing to put myself in harm’s way to prevent that.
“If you go to her now then you are letting her know about us,” I warned him. “This is not the way that you want her to find out.”
“I don’t care about that. She hurt you.”
“I care. I don’t want you to do this, please Kaden.”
I hoped he would listen to me. When he reached out his hand, I flinched for fear that he was going to throw me out of the way but instead, he placed it on the wall beside my bead.
“Do you really want me to leave her alone?” he asked and I nodded. “Okay, if that is what you want then okay but know this, if she ever lays a hand on you again, I will not listen to you. Do you understand?”
“I do, thank you.”
He pulled me into his chest and buried his nose into my air. I allowed him embrace me and take in deep breaths of air. I heard that your mate’s scent had the capacity to calm you beyond measures and somehow I knew that was exactly what Kaden was doing in that moment. He was using my scent as a means to calm down and I allowed him.
In that moment I realized how right my instincts were earlier. I knew this day was going to be explosive but I didn’t think it was going to be this bad. If Kaden found out about the letters then it would have been worse. I could only imagine the carnage he would have caused with that knowledge.
He pulled back from me and cupped my cheeks in his hands. “I hope you know what you’re doing.”
“I hope so too.”
He leaned down and kissed me softly. “Before all of this, there was something I wanted to ask you. There is a meeting we are having with a few Alphas and your father will be there. I do not trust that the boy won’t try to find you here while that happens so I want you to come with me.”
“How are you going to explain that?”
“I’ll figure it out. It is in two days and all I need is an okay from you.”
“Okay.”
He leaned down and kissed me once more. “Just wait for my call.”
Kaden left right after that and Clara walked out of the hallway. From her expression, I knew she was eavesdropping on the conversation. She walked into the living room and took a seat on the couch as if nothing had happened but I knew there was something she wanted to say.
“What is it?” I asked and she shrugged innocently. “Don’t do that, I know you have something to say.”
“You have Kaden wrapped around your finger. I love you as a sister but Kaden is my brother. Please don’t hurt him.”
There was no threat in her words but there was an underlying tone, one that said she would brawl to the death for him. I didn’t blame her for her words, I would have done the same had I been in her position. Instead, I nodded to let her know that I understood and I showed her with my eyes that I didn’t have any intentions to hurt him.
“Your flowers are on my dresser. Do you want them?”
I hesitated for a second. I could take them but then what? I didn’t want to accept Blake’s gift so easily. A part of me was furious over everything he did and accepting his gift would be like forgiving him. I was not ready to do that.
“Throw it in the trash.”
I could tell that my answer was the right one because the corner of her lips quirked up. “What about the letter? Would you like me to find out how he managed to get into the pack? I have friends in high places. I could get it done without Kaden finding out.”
Her offer was tempting and I almost accepted but I knew that if I were to find out how Blake was communicating with me then I would be tempted to communicate back so I shook my head.
“Burn the letter, I don’t want to hear from him.”
Her smile grew wider. “Your wish is my command.”
