"The old ways brought us here," I replied steadily. "Perhaps it's time for new ones."

After Marcus was removed, the council erupted into discussion—some members arguing for immediate execution, others for imprisonment, still others concerned about the wider implications of a council member's betrayal.

"There's another matter to address," Richard said, bringing the council back to order. "The hunters captured tonight mentioned others who know about werewolves, about the Gray bloodline specifically. This threat remains even with Marcus contained."

"And the gala tomorrow night," James Silverton added. "Do we proceed as planned, knowing hunters may have additional information about our gathering?"

"We must proceed," Caleb said firmly, returning to his place beside me. "Canceling would show weakness, fear. But we'll increase security, change access protocols, ensure no one enters who doesn't belong."

"And what of Eve Gray?" Margaret asked. "She remains their primary target."

All eyes turned to me once more. I straightened my shoulders, meeting their gazes directly. "I'll attend as planned," I said with more confidence than I felt. "I won't hide from those who murdered my mother. And my abilities may be useful if there's trouble."

"Bold," Richard commented, approval in his tone. "But risky."

"Life is risk," I replied simply. "Especially for werewolves."

The council session continued for another hour, addressing security arrangements, Marcus's interim replacement (Lucas would temporarily assume his duties), and the longer-term implications of what my abilities might mean for werewolf society.

Throughout it all, Caleb remained at my side, our shoulders occasionally touching, a physical reminder of the bond that had been publicly acknowledged. Neither of us had time to discuss what his declaration meant—the word "mate" carried weight in werewolf society, was not used lightly or casually.

By the time the council adjourned in the early hours of the morning, exhaustion had settled into my bones. The events of the day—my first transformation, the confrontation with hunters, Marcus's betrayal and attempted attack—had drained me physically and emotionally.

"You need rest," Caleb said as we left the chamber, his hand at the small of my back guiding me through the mansion. "Tomorrow will be challenging enough without sleep deprivation."

"I should call my dad," I remembered suddenly. "Let him know I'm okay."

"Already done," he assured me. "While you were speaking with Margaret after the council. He sends his love and says he'll see you at the gala tomorrow night."

The casual mention caught me by surprise. "My dad's coming to the gala?"

Caleb nodded. "All family members of recognized werewolves are invited, human or otherwise. It's tradition. And after everything that's happened, having him close might be safer than leaving him unprotected at home."

The thoughtfulness of the arrangement touched me deeply. Once again, Caleb had considered my human connections, had taken steps to include rather than separate me from my previous life.

"Thank you," I said simply, knowing he would understand all I was thanking him for.

He led me to a guest suite in the mansion's east wing—a comfortable bedroom with attached bathroom, already prepared with fresh towels and what appeared to be sleep clothes laid out on the bed.

"Sophia's doing," he explained, noticing my surprise at the preparations. "She thought you might need to stay over after your first transformation, even before tonight's complications."

"She's very thoughtful," I observed, touched by the consideration.

"She likes you," Caleb said with a small smile. "We all do."

The simple statement carried weight beyond its words. We all do. The pack. My pack now, officially recognized by the council, bound by connections I could feel even in my exhausted state.

"About what you said," I began hesitantly. "In the council chamber. When you called me your mate."

His expression turned serious, a hint of vulnerability beneath his usual confidence. "I spoke truth in a moment of danger," he said quietly. "Perhaps sooner than I should have. If you're not ready to acknowledge that aspect of our connection—"

"I'm not objecting," I interrupted. "Just... surprised. It's a significant declaration in werewolf society, isn't it? Not something said lightly."

"It's binding," he confirmed. "A public acknowledgment of what we've both been feeling, what the wolf recognizes even when the human mind hesitates." He took a step closer, his amber eyes intent on mine. "But as I told you before, the mate bond is an opportunity, not a sentence. My declaration doesn't force you into anything you're not ready for."

I considered his words, the careful way he balanced werewolf tradition with respect for my autonomy. In the short time I'd known him—really known him, beyond the pretense of our initial arrangement—Caleb had consistently shown this balance. Protective without being possessive. Strong without being domineering. Traditional in many ways, yet open to change where it mattered.

"I'm not being forced into anything," I said softly, taking a step toward him, closing the distance between us. "The connection between us... I've felt it from the beginning, even when I didn't understand what it was."

Relief and something deeper flickered in his eyes. "As have I," he admitted. "From the moment I caught your scent in the library, something in me recognized you. Not just as a Gray, but as mine."

The possessive word should have bothered me—I'd always valued my independence, resisted being claimed by anyone. But coming from Caleb, in this context, it felt right. A recognition of something that existed between us, not an imposition of his will over mine.

"Yours," I acknowledged softly. "And you're mine."

The simple exchange carried the weight of formal vows in werewolf culture. I could feel it resonating through the bond between us, strengthening and deepening the connection in ways that transcended physical proximity.

Caleb's hand came up to cup my cheek, his touch gentle despite the power I knew those hands contained. "We should wait," he said, though his eyes told a different story. "You've been through so much today. Your first transformation, the hunters, Marcus's betrayal... You need time to process, to be certain."

His consideration only confirmed what my heart already knew. This man—this wolf—would always put my wellbeing above his own desires. Would respect my choices even when they conflicted with tradition or his own wishes.

"I am certain," I said, leaning into his touch. "About this, if nothing else."

The last of his restraint dissolved at my words. He pulled me to him, his mouth finding mine with a hunger that matched my own. This kiss was different from our moonlit encounter in the forest—deeper, more deliberate, a claiming on both sides. His arms encircled me completely, strong and secure, as mine wound around his neck, fingers tangling in his dark hair.

I felt the mate bond flare between us, no longer potential but active, alive with shared emotion and sensation. His pleasure became mine, my desire reflected back through the connection, creating a feedback loop of escalating intensity.

When we finally broke apart, both breathing hard, his eyes had shifted to wolf gold, the beast close to the surface. I suspected mine showed a similar transformation—the wolf responding to the mate bond's activation.

"Eve," he murmured, my name a caress and a question.

"Stay with me tonight," I whispered, answering the unspoken query. "Just... stay. Hold me."

He understood what I was asking—and what I wasn't. Physical intimacy would come, but tonight I needed the security of his presence, the comfort of the mate bond newly acknowledged, without the additional intensity of full physical claiming.

"Always," he promised, pressing his forehead to mine in a gesture that felt ancient and instinctual.

We settled into the guest suite's large bed fully clothed, my back against his chest, his arms around me, our bodies fitting together as if designed for this purpose. Through the mate bond, I could feel his contentment, his protective instinct satisfied by having me safe in his embrace.

"Sleep," he murmured against my hair. "I'll watch over you."

Exhaustion finally claimed me, pulling me into dreams filled with forests and moonlight, running alongside a black wolf whose amber eyes watched over me with unwavering devotion.
