Scene 3.1: Rising Social Capital

The aftermath of the Northstar presentation rippled through King Media Group like a stone dropped in still water. By lunchtime, everyone had heard about Stella Blake's unexpected triumph and Lily White's equally unexpected demotion to implementation duties.

Stella sat at her desk, calmly working through emails while ignoring the not-so-subtle glances and whispers from her colleagues. Her meeting with Harrison was still hours away, but she was already preparing, reviewing notes with SASS's guidance.

"Your social capital just skyrocketed," SASS observed as Stella declined a lunch invitation from Emma in Design - her third social invitation of the day. "Suddenly everyone wants to be friends with the woman who outmaneuvered the office queen bee."

"Fairweather friends," Stella murmured, typing a response to Northstar's marketing director. "They'd abandon me just as quickly if the tide turned again."

"Cynical, but accurate," SASS agreed. "Though a few strategic alliances wouldn't hurt."

"I'm being selective," Stella replied, glancing up as a shadow fell across her desk.

Felix Moore stood there, his usual smug expression replaced by something more calculated. He was dressed impeccably as always, his designer suit and perfectly styled hair projecting an image of success and confidence. But the People Reading Scanner highlighted tension in his shoulders and a tightness around his eyes - signs of stress poorly concealed.

"Stella," he greeted her with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Got a minute to chat?"

"Danger! Danger!" SASS blared in her mind. "Wolf in cheap cologne approaching! His smile is faker than Lily's eyelashes!"

"Of course," Stella replied pleasantly, saving her work. "Your office or mine?"

"Neither," Felix glanced around. "How about coffee? The place downstairs?"

Interesting, Stella thought. He wanted to talk away from office ears and eyes.

"Lead the way," she agreed, grabbing her phone and the Truth Recorder pendant, which she never removed during work hours.

Scene 3.2: Felix's False Olive Branch

The coffee shop in the lobby of their building was busy with the lunch crowd, providing both background noise for privacy and enough witnesses to prevent anything too confrontational. Felix secured a small table in the corner while Stella ordered their drinks - an americano for herself and a complicated latte with almond milk and three sweeteners for Felix, a detail she remembered from her previous life.

"You remembered my order," Felix noted with surprise when she set his drink before him.

"I pay attention," Stella replied simply, taking her seat.

Felix studied her for a moment, as if seeing her for the first time. "Yes, you certainly do. That's becoming increasingly clear."

"What did you want to discuss, Felix?"

He leaned forward, lowering his voice. "I think we may have gotten off on the wrong foot regarding Northstar."

"Is that what happened?" Stella asked innocently, taking a sip of her coffee.

"Look, business is business. Lily and I were just playing the game the way it's always been played. Nothing personal."

"Sabotaging my work, excluding me from meetings, and threatening my career seems pretty personal to me."

Felix had the grace to look slightly uncomfortable. "Perhaps things went too far. But you have to understand, Lily felt threatened."

"By me?" Stella raised an eyebrow. "The person she's been stepping over for three years?"

"You've changed," Felix said bluntly. "Dramatically. Suddenly you're confident, prepared, three steps ahead of everyone else. It's... unsettling."

"Activate Intention Analysis," Stella thought to SASS, studying Felix's face as the scanner highlighted his micro-expressions.

"He's probing for weaknesses while appearing supportive," SASS analyzed. "Classic manipulation tactic."

"People change," Stella said aloud. "Sometimes they just need the right motivation."

"And what was yours?" Felix asked, leaning forward with what appeared to be genuine curiosity.

Stella considered her response carefully. This was an opportunity to practice what SASS had called "strategic vulnerability" - sharing enough truth to seem open while protecting herself.

"Let's just say I had a wake-up call," she replied, echoing what she'd told Harrison. "I realized I'd been letting other people define my worth and capabilities for too long."

"That's... surprisingly introspective," Felix commented, studying her.

"We all have hidden depths, Felix. Even you."

He laughed, a short, surprised sound. "Me? I'm an open book."

"Are you?" Stella tilted her head. "Because from where I'm sitting, you seem like someone playing a role you're not entirely comfortable with."

The scanner highlighted a spike in his heart rate and a micro-expression of alarm quickly masked. She'd hit a nerve.

"Not bad," SASS approved. "You're learning to lie without actually lying. I'm almost proud."

Felix recovered quickly, his smile returning. "Amateur psychology, Stella? I didn't know that was one of your talents."

"Like I said, hidden depths." She took another sip of her coffee. "Now, what is it you really wanted to talk about? Because I doubt you invited me here to discuss personal growth."

Felix's expression shifted to something more businesslike. "Direct. I can appreciate that." He leaned forward again. "Harrison's impressed with you. That much is obvious. But you're still relatively new to the spotlight, and navigating the politics at the upper levels of King Media can be... treacherous."

"And you're offering to be my guide?" Stella asked skeptically.

"I'm offering an alliance," Felix corrected. "Lily's been the face of creative for so long that people have forgotten there are other talented individuals in the company. Perhaps it's time for new voices to be heard."

Stella studied him, the scanner highlighting the calculation behind his friendly expression. "You're suggesting we work together against Lily? Your closest ally in the company?"

Felix shrugged, the gesture too casual to be genuine. "Alliances shift. That's business."

"And what would this new alliance entail?"

"Simple. I have Harrison's ear as his oldest friend. You have the fresh ideas and talent he's clearly noticed. Together, we could reshape the creative direction of the entire company."

"While conveniently sidelining Lily in the process," Stella observed.

"She's had her time in the spotlight," Felix replied, a hint of coldness entering his voice. "Every reign comes to an end eventually."

Stella sat back, considering him. The betrayal was breathtaking in its casualness. If Felix would turn on Lily so easily, he would certainly do the same to Stella when it suited him.

"That's quite an offer," she said finally. "I'll need to think about it."

"Don't think too long," Felix warned, his tone light but his eyes serious. "Opportunities like this are rare, and Lily won't stay down for long. She's already planning her comeback."

"I'm sure she is," Stella agreed. "Thank you for the coffee, Felix. And the... illuminating conversation."

As they returned to the office, SASS chuckled in her mind. "Well, that was predictable. The rats are already abandoning the sinking ship."

"He's testing the waters," Stella murmured once they were alone in the elevator. "Seeing if I'm naive enough to trust him."

"And are you?"

"What do you think?" Stella smiled slightly as the elevator doors opened.

"I think Felix Moore is about to learn that betrayal is a game two can play," SASS replied with satisfaction. "And you're much better at it than he is."

Scene 3.3: The Promotion Meeting

At precisely three o'clock, Stella knocked on Harrison King's office door, her expression composed despite the butterflies in her stomach. Their meeting after the Northstar presentation could determine the trajectory of her career - both in this life and beyond.

"Enter," came Harrison's deep voice.

He was standing by the window when she walked in, his tall frame silhouetted against the afternoon light. He turned as she entered, gesturing to the chair across from his desk.

"Ms. Blake. Thank you for being prompt."

"Of course, Mr. King."

Harrison returned to his seat, studying her with those penetrating gray eyes that had once intimidated her so thoroughly. Now, she met his gaze steadily, waiting for him to speak first.

"I've been reviewing your file," he said finally, tapping a folder on his desk. "Three years with King Media Group. Consistently positive performance reviews, though nothing particularly standout until recently. Multiple instances of being passed over for promotion despite meeting all qualifications."

He looked up at her. "An interesting pattern emerges."

"What pattern is that, sir?"

"One of systematic undervaluation," Harrison replied bluntly. "The question is why."

Stella considered her response carefully. "Perhaps my work style didn't draw attention the way others' did."

"Or perhaps," Harrison countered, "attention was deliberately directed elsewhere."

The statement hung in the air between them, surprisingly direct for a man known for his diplomatic corporate speak.

"That's a possibility," Stella acknowledged.

Harrison leaned back in his chair. "The Northstar presentation was revealing in more ways than one. Not just in terms of the work itself, but in the dynamics between you and Ms. White."

"We have different approaches," Stella said diplomatically.

"Indeed." Harrison's expression remained unreadable. "Ms. Blake, I'm going to be direct with you. King Media Group has a problem with how credit and opportunity are distributed. It's become apparent to me that merit isn't always the deciding factor it should be."

Stella blinked, genuinely surprised by his candor. This was not how the conversation had gone in her previous life - not that she'd ever had a one-on-one meeting with Harrison back then.

"I appreciate your directness, sir."

"Then let me be even more direct. I'm restructuring the creative department. Effective immediately, you'll be heading the Northstar account as Creative Director, reporting directly to me. Ms. White will continue with implementation as previously discussed."

Stella's heart raced, but she kept her expression professional. "Thank you for the opportunity. I won't disappoint you."

"I don't expect you will," Harrison agreed. "But this promotion comes with a caveat."

"Which is?"

"I need to understand exactly what's been happening in my company," Harrison said, his gaze intensifying. "The presentation today suggested patterns of behavior that concern me deeply. I want your honest assessment of the situation with Ms. White and Mr. Moore."

"Well, well, well," SASS commented in her mind. "Mr. Perfect Hair is finally seeing clearly. About time."

This was a pivotal moment - one that hadn't existed in her previous life. Stella could use this opportunity to completely destroy Lily and Felix, or she could take a more measured approach that might serve her better in the long run.

"Mr. King," she began carefully, "what I've experienced is a systematic pattern of idea appropriation and professional sabotage. Not just against me, but against several colleagues."

She proceeded to outline specific instances, dates, and affected projects - all factual, all verifiable, and all damning without resorting to personal attacks or emotional language.

Harrison listened intently, occasionally making notes. When she finished, he was silent for a long moment.

"This is... more extensive than I realized," he finally said, his expression troubled.

"It's been a successful strategy for them," Stella replied simply. "Until now."

Harrison studied her with renewed interest. "You've documented all of this meticulously. Almost as if you anticipated needing such evidence."

"Let's just say I've learned to be prepared," Stella smiled slightly.

"Indeed." Harrison closed the folder. "Thank you for your candor, Ms. Blake. I'll be addressing these issues appropriately."

"Of course, sir."

As she stood to leave, Harrison added, "One more thing. Felix Moore approached me this morning with some... concerns about you."

Stella's pulse quickened, but she kept her expression neutral. "Oh?"

"He suggested you might be engaging in some questionable tactics to advance your position. Specifically, that you've been spreading rumors about Ms. White to undermine her standing."

"I see," Stella nodded, unsurprised. "And what was your response?"

A ghost of a smile touched Harrison's lips. "I told him I'd look into it. Which I have, by speaking directly with you."

"And your conclusion?"

"That Mr. Moore might be projecting his own tactics onto others," Harrison replied dryly. "Your promotion stands, Ms. Blake. I suggest you prepare for the Northstar client meeting on Thursday. You'll be leading it."

"Thank you, sir. I won't let you down."

As Stella left Harrison's office, she felt a surge of satisfaction that went beyond simple revenge. This was vindication - recognition of her talents that had been denied in her previous life.

"He's falling for you," SASS commented as she walked back to her desk. "Try not to mess it up this time."

"He's recognizing my work," Stella corrected quietly. "There's a difference."

"Sure, keep telling yourself that," SASS replied skeptically. "The way he looks at you isn't just professional admiration."

Before Stella could respond, she spotted Lily waiting by her desk, her expression a careful mask of professional courtesy that didn't reach her eyes.

"Stella," Lily greeted her with a tight smile. "I heard about your promotion. Congratulations."

"Thank you, Lily," Stella replied, matching her professional tone. "I'm looking forward to working with you on the implementation phase."

Lily's smile strained further. "Yes, about that. I was hoping we could discuss the division of responsibilities. Perhaps over drinks after work?"

The People Reading Scanner activated automatically, highlighting Lily's tense posture, elevated heart rate, and the micro-expressions of calculation that flickered across her face.

"It's a trap," SASS warned unnecessarily. "What, did you think she suddenly developed a conscience?"

"I appreciate the invitation," Stella said smoothly, "but I have plans this evening. How about we schedule some time tomorrow to go over everything properly? I want to make sure we have a clear roadmap for success."

Lily's disappointment was barely concealed. "Of course. Tomorrow then."

As she walked away, SASS snickered. "She was hoping to get you alone, probably to record something she could use against you. Amateur hour."

"She's desperate," Stella murmured, sitting down at her desk. "Which makes her dangerous."

"Speaking of dangerous," SASS said, "your three o'clock stalker is right on schedule."

Stella glanced up to see Felix watching her from across the office, his expression calculating. When he caught her eye, he gave her a questioning look, clearly wondering about her meeting with Harrison.

Stella simply smiled enigmatically and turned back to her work, leaving him to wonder.

"Plant THIS seed with Gossip Gina, and THIS one with Talkative Tom," SASS suggested as Stella opened her email. "Then watch the chaos bloom. It's almost artistic."

Taking the hint, Stella composed a few strategic emails - one to Marcus in Accounting about reviewing the Northstar budget, copying several key team members; another to Emma in Design about scheduling a creative brainstorming session for the account; and a third to David in IT requesting access to the project management system that had previously been restricted to director-level employees.

Each message was professional and appropriate, but together they created a clear picture of Stella's new authority without her having to announce it directly. By the end of the day, everyone would know about her promotion and Lily's demotion.

"They're playing checkers, we're playing 5D chess," SASS commented with satisfaction. "It's almost unfair. Almost."

Scene 3.4: The Company Gala

The company gala on Friday night was the perfect testing ground for Stella's new position. Held quarterly to celebrate the agency's successes and boost morale, it was typically a showcase for office politics thinly veiled as professional networking.

In her previous life, Stella had always hovered at the edges of these events, nursing a single glass of champagne and leaving as early as politeness allowed. This time, she arrived fashionably on time in a stunning emerald dress that commanded attention without trying too hard.

"Your dress is acceptable," SASS commented as Stella checked her reflection one last time before entering the venue. "Now remember, laugh at the CEO's jokes even if they're terrible. Which they WILL be."

"I think I can manage basic social niceties without coaching," Stella murmured, adjusting the Truth Recorder pendant that complemented her outfit perfectly.

"Evidence suggests otherwise, but we'll see," SASS replied skeptically.

The gala was held in the rooftop garden of a downtown hotel, with string lights twinkling overhead and the city skyline providing a glamorous backdrop. Stella took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter and surveyed the room, noting who was talking to whom and which executives were present.

Harrison was near the center of the room, engaged in conversation with the company's CFO and several board members. Lily was across the space, looking stunning in a red dress that drew every eye, laughing a bit too loudly with a group that included several key clients. Felix orbited between groups, playing his usual role of charming connector.

"Social Navigation activated," SASS announced. "The board member at two o'clock is Walter Chen, major influence on Harrison. The woman in blue by the bar is Elaine Winters, Marketing VP for Hendricks Global - a potential huge client. And your first incoming contact is... Marcus from Accounting, approaching from the left with what appears to be genuine friendliness. Rare in this snake pit."

"Stella!" Marcus greeted her warmly. "The woman of the hour. Everyone's talking about your promotion."

"I doubt that's all they're talking about," Stella replied with a smile.

"Well, the dramatic fall of Lily White from Harrison's favor is running a close second," Marcus admitted, lowering his voice. "Though no one quite knows what happened."

"Sometimes merit actually wins," Stella suggested, taking a sip of her champagne.

"In this company? That would be a refreshing change." Marcus clinked his glass against hers. "Well, whatever you did, it's shaken things up around here. In a good way."

As the evening progressed, Stella navigated the social currents with a confidence she'd never possessed before. She spoke briefly but meaningfully with key executives, charmed potential clients, and built connections with colleagues who had previously overlooked her.

All the while, she was aware of Lily watching her, the People Reading Scanner highlighting her increasing agitation as she witnessed Stella's social success.

"Look at Mean Queen's face!" SASS crowed when Stella glanced in Lily's direction after making the CFO laugh genuinely at a clever industry observation. "She's realizing her kingdom is crumbling. Delicious!"

The defining moment came when Harrison approached Stella as she was speaking with Elaine Winters from Hendricks Global.

"Ms. Blake," he greeted her, his deep voice carrying just enough warmth to be noticed. "I see you've met Ms. Winters."

"Yes, we were just discussing Hendricks' upcoming rebrand," Stella replied smoothly.

"Stella has some fascinating insights into our market position," Elaine added, clearly impressed. "You've been hiding quite a talent, Harrison."

"Not intentionally, I assure you," Harrison replied, his gaze lingering on Stella. "We're fortunate to have her expertise."

The conversation continued pleasantly, with Stella contributing just enough to demonstrate her knowledge without overshadowing either Harrison or the potential client. When Elaine excused herself to greet another acquaintance, Harrison remained at Stella's side.

"You handle yourself well in these settings," he observed. "Better than I would have expected based on previous events."

"I've been observing for years," Stella replied honestly. "Sometimes watching from the sidelines gives you a clearer view of the game."

Harrison's expression shifted to something more thoughtful. "An insightful perspective." He paused, then added, "Would you join me for a moment? There's someone I'd like you to meet."

As Harrison guided her through the crowd with a light touch at her elbow, Stella was acutely aware of Lily tracking their movement, her expression darkening. The scanner highlighted her rapid pulse and the tension in her jaw - clear signs of barely contained fury.

"She's about to explode," SASS warned gleefully. "This is better than reality TV."

Sure enough, as they passed near Lily's group, she stepped forward to intercept them, her smile brittle.

"Harrison, there you are! I've been hoping to introduce you to the Westfield team." She placed a possessive hand on his arm, pointedly ignoring Stella.

Harrison smoothly disengaged from her touch. "Perhaps later, Lily. I'm introducing Stella to Walter Chen at the moment."

The board member. Stella kept her expression pleasantly neutral despite the significance of this introduction. Harrison was publicly signaling her importance - and Lily's diminished status.

"Of course," Lily replied, her voice tight. "Don't let me keep you."

As they walked away, SASS cackled. "Her face! That was worth the price of admission alone!"

The rest of the evening continued in similar fashion, with Stella steadily building connections while Lily's influence visibly waned. By the time Stella prepared to leave, she had accomplished more networking in one night than in her entire previous career.

Harrison walked her to the elevator, away from the curious eyes of their colleagues. "You've made quite an impression tonight," he observed.

"That was the goal," Stella admitted with a small smile.

"Mission accomplished, then." He studied her for a moment. "You know, when I first hired you three years ago, I saw potential that never seemed to materialize. I'm beginning to think I wasn't wrong - just premature."

"Sometimes people need time to become who they're meant to be," Stella replied.

"Or the right circumstances to reveal who they've been all along," Harrison countered.

The elevator arrived, and Stella stepped inside. "Good night, Mr. King."

"Harrison," he corrected her. "I think we're past formalities at this point, don't you?"

As the doors closed on his subtle smile, SASS sighed dramatically. "Well, that was nauseating. Though I suppose there are worse potential romantic interests than the CEO who controls your career."

"It's not like that," Stella protested as she exited the hotel.

"Sure it's not," SASS replied skeptically. "Just like Lily's not plotting your downfall as we speak."

Scene 3.5: The HR Ambush

SASS's prediction proved accurate sooner than expected. Monday morning, Stella arrived at the office to find an email from HR requesting her presence at a meeting regarding "concerns about professional conduct."

"Here we go," SASS commented as Stella read the message. "The counterattack begins."

"Sooner than I expected," Stella admitted, checking the meeting time - 11 AM, just an hour away. "They didn't waste any time."

"They're desperate," SASS replied. "Which means they'll be sloppy. This works in our favor."

Stella spent the next hour preparing, reviewing documentation and organizing evidence with SASS's guidance. When she walked into the HR conference room at precisely 11 AM, she was completely composed despite the ambush.

Inside, she found Lily, Felix, Harrison, and Patricia Winters, the head of HR - a setup clearly designed to intimidate.

"Ms. Blake, thank you for joining us," Patricia began formally. "Some concerns have been raised about certain workplace behaviors that we need to address."

"Of course," Stella replied calmly, taking the only empty seat - directly across from Lily and Felix, with Harrison at the head of the table. "I'm happy to discuss any concerns."

Patricia glanced at her notes. "Ms. White has reported several instances of what she describes as undermining behavior, inappropriate client contact, and spreading of false information about colleagues. Mr. Moore has corroborated these concerns."

"I see," Stella nodded, her expression neutral. "May I ask for specific examples?"

Lily leaned forward, her expression a perfect blend of reluctance and concern. "Stella, I've tried to be supportive of your recent... ambitions. But contacting clients directly without authorization, spreading rumors about my work ethic to the creative team, and attempting to take credit for collaborative projects crosses professional boundaries."

Felix nodded solemnly. "I've witnessed several of these incidents myself. It's created a toxic atmosphere in the department."

Patricia turned to Stella. "Do you have any response to these allegations?"

"It's a trap, obviously," SASS commented unnecessarily. "But they've made a critical error by doing this with Harrison present."

"I do have a response," Stella said calmly, opening her laptop. "But first, I'd like to clarify something. Ms. Winters, was this meeting scheduled at Ms. White's request?"

Patricia looked slightly uncomfortable. "Yes, she expressed urgent concerns this morning."

"And was Mr. King informed of the nature of these allegations before the meeting?"

Harrison answered before Patricia could. "I was told there was a personnel issue requiring my attention. The specifics were not shared."

"I see," Stella nodded, her suspicions confirmed. Lily had rushed to HR first thing Monday morning, hoping to ambush Stella before she could defend herself, and had manipulated the situation to include Harrison without giving him time to investigate independently.

"Ms. Blake, do you deny the allegations?" Patricia pressed.

"I don't just deny them - I can disprove them," Stella replied, turning her laptop so everyone could see the screen. "These are emails from Mr. King explicitly authorizing my client contact with Northstar, dated prior to any outreach I made."

She clicked to the next document. "This is the official announcement of my promotion to Creative Director for the Northstar account, which places client communication squarely within my responsibilities."

Another click. "These are the meeting notes from creative team sessions I've led, showing no instances of disparaging comments about Ms. White or anyone else."

With methodical precision, Stella systematically dismantled each accusation, presenting documentation, timestamps, and witness accounts that contradicted Lily and Felix's claims.

As she finished, the room was silent. Harrison's expression had shifted from neutral to something harder, his gaze now fixed on Lily and Felix rather than Stella.

"His plan is falling apart faster than his hairline," SASS gloated as Felix shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Satisfaction Points +100!"

"It appears," Harrison said finally, his voice dangerously quiet, "that this meeting was called under false pretenses."

Lily attempted to recover. "There must be some misunderstanding. I genuinely believed - "

"Ms. White," Harrison cut her off, "I suggest you consider your next words very carefully."

The warning in his tone was unmistakable. Lily fell silent, her carefully constructed facade cracking under the weight of her failed scheme.

Patricia Winters cleared her throat awkwardly. "Given the evidence Ms. Blake has presented, I believe we can consider these concerns addressed. Unless there's anything else?"

"Actually, there is," Stella said, her voice calm but firm. "I'd like to formally report a pattern of workplace harassment and sabotage directed at me by Ms. White and Mr. Moore."

She proceeded to outline, with dates and evidence, the systematic campaign against her - from stolen ideas to exclusion from meetings to the most recent false accusations.

By the time she finished, Felix looked pale, and Lily's expression had hardened into barely contained fury.

"These are serious allegations," Patricia said, visibly uncomfortable with how the meeting had turned. "We'll need to investigate thoroughly."

"Of course," Stella agreed reasonably. "I'm happy to provide any additional information needed."

Harrison stood abruptly. "Ms. Winters, please continue this investigation and report your findings directly to me. Ms. White, Mr. Moore, I expect your full cooperation. Ms. Blake, a word in my office, please."

The dismissal was clear. As Stella gathered her materials, she caught Lily's venomous glare - a look of pure hatred that would have terrified her in her previous life. Now, she simply met it calmly before following Harrison out of the room.

"Well, well, well," SASS commented as they walked to Harrison's office. "Mr. Perfect Hair is finally seeing clearly. About time."

Once inside his office with the door closed, Harrison's professional demeanor slipped slightly, revealing genuine anger beneath.

"That," he said tersely, "was a blatant attempt to undermine you using company resources."

"Yes, it was," Stella agreed simply.

"You were remarkably prepared for an ambush meeting."

Stella smiled slightly. "Let's just say I've learned to anticipate certain behaviors."

Harrison studied her for a long moment. "You knew they would try something like this."

"I knew they wouldn't accept defeat gracefully," Stella corrected. "The specific form of their retaliation was just a matter of time."

Harrison shook his head, a hint of admiration in his expression. "You're not at all who I thought you were, are you?"

"Tell him you had an epiphany," SASS suggested. "Don't mention the dying part - men get weird about that."

"Let's just say I've had a perspective shift recently," Stella replied. "Sometimes it takes a wake-up call to realize what you're capable of."

Harrison nodded slowly. "Well, whatever prompted this change, it's... impressive." He paused, then added more formally, "The Northstar client meeting is still on for Thursday. I trust this incident won't affect your preparation?"

"Not in the slightest," Stella assured him.

"Good. And Stella - " he rarely used her first name, the sound of it in his deep voice sending an unexpected shiver down her spine, " - watch your back. They won't stop after one failed attempt."

"I know," she replied simply. "But neither will I."

As she left Harrison's office, SASS chuckled. "The way he looks at you... I'd say our revenge plan just gained something new. You're welcome."

Stella ignored the comment, her mind already racing ahead to the next potential moves in this corporate chess game. Lily and Felix had shown their hand - a direct attack through official channels. Having failed there, they would likely try something more underhanded next.

The question was what - and when.

Scene 3.6: The Dinner Trap

The answer came sooner than expected. That afternoon, Felix approached Stella's desk with an expression of contrition so perfectly crafted it could only be fake.

"Stella," he began, his voice pitched low enough that nearby colleagues couldn't overhear. "I want to apologize for this morning. Things got out of hand."

The People Reading Scanner activated automatically, highlighting his elevated heart rate and the tension in his shoulders - signs of deception rather than genuine remorse.

"Did they?" Stella replied neutrally, continuing to type as she spoke.

"Lily was upset after the gala. She acted impulsively, and I... well, I went along with it when I shouldn't have." He sighed, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "The truth is, I'm tired of being caught in the middle of this."

"The middle implies neutrality," Stella observed. "You've been anything but neutral, Felix."

"Fair point," he conceded with a rueful smile that didn't reach his eyes. "But people can change their positions, can't they? You certainly have."

Stella finally looked up from her computer, studying him. "What exactly are you suggesting?"

Felix glanced around before leaning closer. "Dinner tonight. Just you and me. There are things you should know - about Lily, about Harrison, about the company. Information that could be valuable to someone in your position."

"Danger! Danger!" SASS warned. "Wolf in cheap cologne approaching! His smile is faker than Lily's eyelashes!"

"Why would you share such valuable information with me?" Stella asked, her tone skeptical.

"Let's just say I'm betting on the winning horse," Felix replied with a smirk. "Lily's star is falling. Yours is rising. I'm a pragmatist, Stella. Always have been."

"A pragmatist," Stella repeated thoughtfully. "Is that what we're calling it now?"

Felix's smile tightened slightly. "Seven o'clock? The Riverview Restaurant? I've already made a reservation."

Stella considered for a moment, weighing the risks against the potential intelligence she might gather. "Alright. Seven o'clock."

"Excellent," Felix straightened, looking pleased. "I think this is the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship."

As he walked away, SASS groaned. "Please tell me you're not actually trusting this snake."

"Of course not," Stella murmured once Felix was out of earshot. "But sometimes you need to get close to your enemies to understand their next move."

"It's a trap, obviously," SASS insisted. "What, did you think he suddenly developed good taste in women?"

"It's absolutely a trap," Stella agreed. "The question is, what kind? And how can we turn it to our advantage?"

She spent the rest of the afternoon preparing, with SASS's reluctant help. By the time she left the office to change for dinner, she had three contingency plans in place and the Truth Recorder pendant fully charged.

The Riverview Restaurant was exactly the kind of place Felix would choose - expensive enough to impress, with private booths perfect for confidential conversations. Stella arrived precisely on time, dressed in a simple but elegant black dress that revealed nothing while suggesting everything.

Felix was already waiting, rising from his seat with an appreciative smile as the host led her to his table. "Stella. You look stunning."

"Thank you," she replied, taking her seat. "This is quite a venue for an apology dinner."

"Only the best for new alliances," Felix smiled, signaling the waiter for champagne. "I thought we should celebrate properly."

"Celebrate what, exactly?"

"New beginnings. Fresh starts." Felix leaned forward once the champagne was poured and they were alone again. "And the fall of Lily White."

Stella raised an eyebrow. "That's quite a toast from her closest ally."

"Former ally," Felix corrected smoothly. "As I said, I'm a pragmatist. Lily's made too many enemies, taken too many risks. Her methods have become... liability."

"And yours haven't?" Stella asked pointedly.

Felix laughed, a sound calculated to be charming. "I'm more careful. More strategic."

"More willing to betray a longtime friend at the first sign of trouble," Stella added, taking a sip of her champagne.

"Business isn't friendship," Felix shrugged, unperturbed by her assessment. "It's about positioning and opportunity. Right now, you're the opportunity, Stella."

"How flattering," she replied dryly.

"It should be," Felix insisted. "Harrison doesn't bring just anyone into his inner circle. The fact that he's championing you means something. I want to be on the right side of that equation."

"And what exactly does being on the right side entail?"

Felix smiled, reaching into his jacket pocket. "Information, for starters."

He placed a small USB drive on the table between them. "This contains emails between Lily and several clients. Emails where she disparages your work, undermines your authority, and attempts to redirect projects back to herself."

Stella looked at the drive without touching it. "Why would you give me this?"

"Insurance," Felix replied simply. "Proof of my good faith. And a demonstration of how valuable I can be to you."

The scanner highlighted his increased heart rate and the subtle tension around his eyes - signs that there was more to this offer than he was revealing.

"Not bad," SASS commented reluctantly. "You're learning to lie without actually lying. I'm almost proud."

"What do you want in return, Felix?" Stella asked directly.

"Your support with Harrison," he replied without hesitation. "A good word. Acknowledgment of my contributions. Partnership rather than competition."

"And Lily?"

"Lily made her choice," Felix said, his voice hardening slightly. "She's trying to save herself at everyone else's expense. Including mine."

Stella studied him for a long moment, then picked up the USB drive. "I'll consider your offer."

"That's all I ask," Felix smiled, raising his glass. "To mutually beneficial arrangements."

They clinked glasses, and Stella took a careful sip, watching him over the rim. The dinner proceeded with Felix sharing gossip and insider information about various executives and clients - some of it potentially useful, all of it calculated to demonstrate his value as an ally.

By dessert, he had moved to more personal topics, his body language shifting to something more intimate as he leaned closer across the table.

"You know," he said, his voice dropping slightly, "I've always thought you were underestimated in the company. Even before your recent... transformation."

"Is that so?" Stella replied skeptically. "You had an interesting way of showing it."

"Professional necessity," Felix shrugged, his smile turning apologetic. "But privately? I've always seen your potential."

The scanner highlighted every sign of deception in his expression and posture. This was a performance, carefully calculated to appeal to vanity and the desire for validation.

"His plan is falling apart faster than his hairline," SASS commented as Stella maintained her polite but noncommittal smile. "Satisfaction Points +100!"

As Felix signaled for the check, his phone buzzed with a text message. He glanced at it, a flicker of satisfaction crossing his face before he quickly masked it.

"Everything alright?" Stella asked innocently.

"Perfect," Felix replied, putting his phone away. "Just confirming a meeting for tomorrow."

But the scanner had caught his micro-expression, and SASS was instantly alert. "He just received confirmation of something. Whatever trap he's setting, it's being activated now."

"This has been lovely," Stella said as Felix paid the bill, "but I should be heading home. Big day tomorrow with the Northstar preparations."

"Of course," Felix agreed smoothly, standing to help her with her chair. "Let me walk you to your car."

"That's not necessary," Stella began, but Felix was insistent.

"I insist. It's late, and this neighborhood can be unpredictable after dark."

As they exited the restaurant, Stella was acutely aware of Felix guiding her not toward the parking garage where her car was located, but toward a quieter side street.

"My car is the other way," she pointed out.

"Just a small detour," Felix smiled, his hand at the small of her back becoming more insistent. "There's someone who wants to speak with you briefly."

"It's a trap," SASS warned unnecessarily. "But they've made a critical error by doing this where your Truth Recorder can capture everything."

As they rounded the corner, Stella saw a dark sedan idling at the curb. The back door opened, and Lily stepped out, her expression cold and triumphant.

Scene 3.7: The Dark Alley Confrontation

"Right on time," she said to Felix, before turning her attention to Stella. "Thank you for joining us for this... additional meeting."

"I don't recall agreeing to meet with you, Lily," Stella replied calmly, though her heart was racing.

"Some conversations are better had away from the office," Lily smiled thinly. "Away from Harrison's protective gaze."

Felix's hand was still at Stella's back, subtly blocking her retreat. "We just want to talk, Stella. Clear the air properly."

"In a dark alley beside an idling car?" Stella raised an eyebrow. "How cliché."

Lily's smile hardened. "Always so clever. That's part of the problem, isn't it? You've forgotten your place in the hierarchy."

"And where exactly is that?" Stella asked, her voice steady despite the threatening situation.

"Beneath me," Lily replied coldly. "Where you belong. Where you've always belonged."

"I think recent events suggest otherwise," Stella observed.

Lily stepped closer, her perfectly manicured finger jabbing toward Stella's face. "You think you've won because you've temporarily charmed Harrison? Because you've stolen my clients? You have no idea what you're dealing with."

"I think I do," Stella replied, subtly activating the Truth Recorder. "You're threatened because for once, someone is holding you accountable for your actions."

"Accountable?" Lily laughed, the sound harsh in the quiet street. "You want to talk about accountability? How about we discuss how you've been accessing confidential company files? How you've been contacting clients without authorization? How you've been spreading rumors to undermine me?"

"We both know none of that is true," Stella said calmly.

"Truth is whatever Harrison believes," Felix interjected smoothly. "And right now, he trusts you. But trust is fragile, Stella. Especially when evidence suggests it's been misplaced."

"What evidence?" Stella asked, though she was beginning to see their plan.

Lily smiled coldly. "The evidence on the USB drive Felix just gave you. The one with your fingerprints all over it. The one that, when analyzed, will show you accessed confidential client files you had no authority to view."

"A setup," Stella realized aloud. "That's what this dinner was about."

"Among other things," Felix agreed with a shrug. "The dinner was recorded, by the way. Your rather... eager acceptance of confidential information about colleagues will make for interesting listening for HR."

"So what exactly do you want?" Stella asked, playing along while the Truth Recorder captured every word.

"Simple," Lily replied. "You resign from the Northstar account. Cite personal reasons, health concerns, whatever you prefer. You return to your previous position and stay there. No more ambitions, no more undermining me."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then the evidence on that drive finds its way to Harrison and the board," Felix said smoothly. "Along with testimony from several colleagues about your recent erratic behavior and questionable methods."

"You've bought people to lie for you," Stella observed.

"We've reminded people where their loyalties should lie," Lily corrected. "This company operated perfectly well before you decided to play power games, Stella. It will continue to do so once you're back in your proper place."

Stella considered her options carefully. She could expose their scheme right now, but that might limit how much information she could gather about the full extent of their plan.

"I need time to think," she said finally.

"You have until tomorrow morning," Lily replied coldly. "Before the Northstar preparation meeting. Make the right choice, Stella. For your career's sake."

With that, she turned and got back into the waiting car. Felix lingered a moment longer, his expression almost regretful.

"For what it's worth," he said quietly, "I did try to warn you to stay in your lane. This could have been avoided."

"Your concern is touching," Stella replied dryly.

"Just business," Felix shrugged before following Lily into the car.

As the sedan pulled away, SASS finally broke its uncharacteristic silence during the confrontation. "Well, that was dramatic. Though I have to admit, their evil plotting needs work. Very B-movie villain."

"They're desperate," Stella murmured, watching the taillights disappear around a corner. "Which makes them dangerous."

"But predictable," SASS added. "And we've got the entire conversation recorded, including their admission of planting false evidence."

Stella nodded, already formulating her next move. "Tomorrow's going to be interesting."

"That's one word for it," SASS agreed. "I prefer 'catastrophic' - for them, not us."

As Stella walked to her car, she felt strangely calm despite the confrontation. In her previous life, such a threat would have terrified her into submission. Now, it was just another move in the game - one she was fully prepared to counter.

The final showdown was approaching, and this time, she would be the one setting the terms.
