The High Priest gripped her staff and stepped forward, her expression severe.
"As High Priest, I cannot allow a wolf cub of uncertain bloodline to become the Alpha's heir!"
Hearing these words, the crowd exchanged bewildered glances. Caden's displeasure was evident. "What do you mean? Are you suggesting I can't recognize my own son?"
"Perhaps, Alpha, you've been deceived by this human. This little half-breed isn't your biological child at all." Nova stepped out from behind the High Priest.
"Nova, you are no longer worthy to stand here." Caden's anger was building. "High Priest, is this wolf pack under your command now?"
The High Priest lowered her head. "I wouldn't dare."
"Alpha, I couldn't bear to see you deceived. I know I no longer have the right to be here, but even as I leave, I must expose this human woman's true face." Nova's tears fell dramatically.
Gasps of shock rose from the crowd.
"What? A human woman? How could a human possibly bear the Alpha's child?"
The High Priest leaned on her staff and produced a crystal ball from her sleeve. "Alpha, I'm only thinking of the pack's interests. To ensure the purity of our bloodline, I suggest a blood relationship test."
Caden's face turned ashen. His silence was refusal.
Marcus never expected this turn of events. The Alpha hated nothing more than having his orders defied.
He desperately tried to signal the High Priest with his eyes.
"This is to convince everyone," the High Priest insisted.
"Yes, Alpha, I also think we should test the blood. After all, his mother is human," several elders chimed in.
"I recommend it as well."
"I also recommend it."
Marcus closed his eyes helplessly. This would only enrage the Alpha further.
Sure enough, Caden descended the steps one by one, his eyes glowing gold. "You dare to command me?" he roared.
Everyone fell silent in fear, no one daring to make a sound.
But Ella's voice broke through the terrifying silence.
"Alpha, I also recommend the test," Ella said calmly from behind him.
Caden's golden pupils gradually faded. "Ella?"
"Alpha, I don't want to make things difficult for you. Finn is your child, and I'm not afraid of anyone questioning it." Ella's voice was reassuring. "If they want to test, let them test."
That night, under the moonlight, the crystal ball emitted a faint glow, reflecting the moon's shape. Caden and Finn stood on either side.
As the High Priest chanted, the crystal ball's light grew brighter. Both placed their hands upon it.
In the center of the hall, everyone held their breath. The crystal ball suddenly emitted a powerful, blinding golden light, but in an instant, all light was swallowed up. The crystal returned to black, motionless.
"Gods above! Only if it turns red can it prove they have a blood relationship!"
The surrounding werewolves murmured, "Our Alpha has been deceived by a human!"
The High Priest looked at the black crystal ball and shook her head. "It didn't turn red, Alpha. Finn is not of your bloodline."
Nova was overjoyed. "This little bastard truly isn't his biological child."
"Alpha, the crystal ball doesn't make mistakes. Since Finn isn't of your bloodline, please revoke his status as your heir," the High Priest said.
His instinct couldn't be wrong. Caden's body tensed as he turned away, suppressing his rage. "We'll discuss this later. All of you, leave now."
The High Priest tried to persuade him. "Alpha, please—"
Caden erupted, sweeping everything off the table. The crystal ball crashed to the floor. "I said get out! All of you!"
Ella hugged the confused Finn, looking worriedly at Caden.
Everyone filed out. Nova glanced at the crystal shards on the floor, a triumphant smile on her face as she left.
After a moment of silence, Caden rubbed his forehead and walked out, ignoring everyone. Ella asked Marcus to watch Finn, then hurried after Caden.
"Alpha, please listen! Finn truly is your child!"
At the corner, Caden stopped. He grabbed Ella's wrist and pinned her against the wall.
"Why did you lie to me? I had finally accepted that you're human!" Caden glared fiercely at the woman who constantly disrupted his peace of mind.
"You've been lying to me all along!"
Ella shook her head frantically. "I didn't lie to you! I swear Finn is your child! I don't know why this happened—"
Caden cut her off abruptly. "Who is the father? One of your countless blind dates?"
"What—"
Ella's shock was silenced as Caden roughly claimed her lips.
