If Luana and Rey were enjoying themselves at the Leipzig Grande Hall, then there was someone else on the other side of the world.
The woman tied her blond hair up high, letting the obvious makeup act as a shield for a face that was already beautiful from birth.
Coupled with the blush-colored lipstick on her thick lips, with a cigarette tucked between her hands.
The sun was still shining brightly out there, but it looked like she was ready to enjoy the world. The beautiful jazz music coming from one of the cafes in the city slowly drifted past her ears, and she unconsciously swayed her body to the beat.
"Hey!"
A gentle pat landed on Beatrice's shoulder, as a woman no less beautiful than herself arrived. "Did you wait long?"
Beatrice looked up first, before giving a firm shake.
"No, I just arrived," she said excitedly. Her eyeballs scanned the other person who had just pulled up a chair in front of her, then squinted slowly.
"Oh my, Mona! Look at that shirt!" she exclaimed under hee breath, with a slightly surprised expression on her face that was too contrived.
The woman named Monalisa reflexively stopped her movements, then rolled her eyes at Beatrice with an uncomprehending look.
"Why?" she asked with a puzzled look in her eyes, not really feeling anything unusual. "My clothes are trending, you know!"
Beatrice could only shake her head, choosing to take a deep drag on her cigarette.
"You're so out of fashion, my friend Monalisa," Beatric sneered. "Do I have to stay in Sidney longer for your fashion to improve?"
Mona didn't seem to heed Beatrice's jibe, because that's exactly what one of her best friends said. Despite being best friends for a long time, they are truly two different personalities. Not only in genres, but also in fashion.
If Beatrie prefers bright colors with a very 'female' style to be her identity, then Mona has fallen in love with a slightly tomboyish style.
Pairing a T-shirt with a jacket or hoodie had become her trademark, and somehow it managed to make Mona look beautiful in her own way.
"No need!" Mona said quickly. She pulled out a chair and sat on it shortly after. "You should go back to Munich, Beatrice, not spending time and money here."
If it was Mona who didn't care, then this time it seemed that Beatrice didn't care what her friend had just said.
The cigarette she had been smoking while waiting for Mona was almost at the end, when she decided to put it out in the ashtray.
Her delicate fingers moved quickly, with nails that were also adorned with bright red polish.
"No kidding," Beatrice sneered again. "I've gone to all this trouble to escape, and you're telling me to come back. Seriously!"
Mona was getting used to this kind of conversation, as she had been hosting Beatrice in Sidney for more than five days.
Though surprised the first time her best friend gave her the news, Mona could do nothing when Beatrice asked her to keep her mouth shut.
Raising her hands in the air, Mona made a gesture to call the café waitress. After letting a young, cropped-haired man take down their order, Mona spoke up again.
"Think about what I'm going to say," she said. "Think well, was your decision to leave Rey Lueic's 'The Unicorn' the right one?"
Beatrice grimaced, staring lazily at Mona who was looking at her seriously.
"The Unicorn?!" exclaimed Beatrice with widened eyes. "Seriously!"
A chuckle escaped Rey's fiancée's lips, followed by the movement of her fingers swirling the dropper into the drink. She had ordered a drink earlier, while waiting for Mona's arrival.
"He's a unicorn!" Mona raised her tone slightly. "You haven't sobered up yet, Beatrice? Or do you have to get drunk repeatedly before you realize that what you're doing is a waste of time?"
Beatrice still didn't seem to be interested, as the expression on her face still showed no interest.
"Do you want to know why I call Rey 'The Unicorn'?" asked Mona defiantly.
The young Miss Collins just chuckled, with her lips perfectly pursed. "Tell me."
Mona adjusted her sitting position, as if what she wanted to say was indeed a very important matter.
"You abandoned one Rey Lueic, for no apparent reason," Mona said to the point. "Choosing to flee to Sidney, and leaving behind the man who could give you anything in the whole world."
Beatrice rolled her eyes, but Mona was already back in her voice.
"He's like a unicorn, an animal desired by goddesses for its purity and beauty," Mona said again. "Now Rey is 'The Real Unicorn', because he's handsome, wealthy, high-ranking royalty, and is heartbroken about being abandoned."
Not done yet, Mona let her voice do the talking.
"And look who foolishly left him?" Mona asked sarcastically. Deliberately suppressing the tone of voice on the word 'foolishly', she was trying to make someone realize now.
"You!" pointed Mona right in Beatrice's face. "You, who I'm sure will regret everything later!"
Beatrice exhaled deeply, quickly pushing Mona's index finger away from her face.
It seemed that the woman was starting to think a little now. The movement of her red hoofed fingers paused for a moment, as she now raised her head to meet Mona's gaze.
"You don't know why I left him," Beatrice said, trying to find a defense.
Mona snorted in annoyance.
"Whatever it is, I don't care!" she quickly retorted. "Whatever your reason for leaving Rey is, I can't accept it. Because you really missed a golden opportunity, Bea-trice-Col-lins!"
Beatrice had planned to keep a tight lid on the reasons that led her to run away the day before the wedding.
She really didn't care about anyone's judgment, as she thought she was the one who would be living the life of Rey Lueic's wife. Rey's decision to keep their relationship a secret was still the biggest obstacle in Beatrice's heart.
"Now say it!" Mona pleaded again. "Try, I want to hear the reason why you left the living treasure behind."
Beatrice burst out laughing, finding it funny for every simile Mona threw out about Rey. Talking about the man made Beatrice suddenly miss her lover, as she now began to wonder what Rey was doing right now.
Would Rey be angry with her? Or is Rey sadly waiting for her to return?
Grabbing the dropper to take a quick sip of her drink, it was now Beatrice's turn to speak up.
"He asked me one impossible thing after our wedding," she said carefully. Finally, she decided to reveal the reason she had been holding back.
Mona put on a serious face, as she raised her radar ears high.
"He asked me to carry his child," Beatrice said again. "As soon as the wedding was held. Because his father was sick, and he really wanted to fulfill his father's request to carry the heir to the Lueic clan before he died."
The woman's eyeballs rolled, as if scrutinizing what response Mona would give her.
But Mona still waited, her expression flat with a few blinks. Beatrice frowned, looking at Mona with a strange look.
"Why are you doing nothing?" she scolded.
Mona frowned in return.
"What else?" she asked. "He asked you to carry his child, so what?!"
Beatrice shrugged.
"That's all," she replied quickly. "It's a difficult request for me, because I've never even thought of having children. That's why I'd better run away, until he withdraws the request on his own."
Mona reflexively pounded the table, exhaling with a fury that seemed to have lingered. The tomboy's eyes widened, followed by a disbelieving shake of her head at her best friend.
Her stupid best friend.
"Jeez, Beatrice!" exclaimed Mona half annoyed. "This excuse of yours... It makes no sense!"
Beatrice bit her lower lip, picking up on the signal that Mona didn't seem to be on the same frequency as her.
"You don't understand, Mona," Beatrice said as she leaned back in her chair. "He's asking for a child. Child, Mona, child! Which means I have to get pregnant, go through morning sickness and body changes, carry that fetus with me for nine months, then risk my life to bring it into the world!"
Mona gritted her teeth impatiently, just about to open her mouth but Beatrice was already on her way.
"I'm not ready!" Beatrice said firmly. "I'll lose my life, and pregnancy might change my body. Just thinking about it makes me shudder with horror, and you know that I wasn't born to be a housewife."
All the swear words that had been on the tip of her tongue were now swallowed whole, as Mona clearly recorded everything Beatrice had just said.
Choosing to catch her breath first, Mona knew it was too late to fix things. After all, Beatrice had completely fled, even cutting off all communication with relatives and family in Munich.
Mona's voice trailed off again, as a waitress had just served drinks to their table.
Moving quickly to take a sip of the bluish liquid, Mona let her breath escape as her emotions evaporated.
"Alright," Mona said this time. "I accept your reasoning, because I don't think having children is a simple matter."
Beatrice straightened up again, now wearing a smile as she got a breath of fresh air from Mona who seemed to understand her.
"Right?" she asked happily. "Do you agree with me?"
Mona didn't nod, but didn't shake her head either. Actually this matter could have been discussed by Beatrice and Rey in a good way, but again it was too late for that.
Mona herself did not give advice that she could not do, because she did not feel appropriate and ready to have a child.
"Until when are you going to disappear like this?" asked Mona finally. "Didn't you say Rey would be looking for you?"
Beatrice smiled even wider, showing off her rows of clean white teeth. In line with her slender height, the woman also had a very high level of confidence.
"He'll definitely come," Beatrice said without hesitation. "It might take him a little longer, since I cut off all communication and traces of me. But I'm sure he'll show up at your apartment soon."
Mona took another sip of her drink, noticing how Beatrice seemed so confident this time. Deep down, she also hoped that her best friend's words would come true.
A waiter approached their table again, this time placing two plates containing beef spaghetti and chicken steak.
Beatrice had already picked up her fork, looking impatient to fill her rumbling stomach.
While Mona was still watching the woman from the corner of her eye, she silently prayed in her heart.
"I hope Rey is looking for you, Beatrice. I hope. May he not find another woman and ask her to carry his child. Hopefully not."
