"I was actually just starting my sophomore year of college when my parents passed away." Kaylin began to speak, keeping her voice impassive.
"I'm so sorry..."
"It had nothing to do with the mafia. It was a hit and run and they literally died in the car right after." She interrupts Fanny, making it clear that this is not really the heart of the story.
"Anyway, my sister was only ten at the time. So I had to drop out of college to support her. And I did. I worked as a waiter and cleaned the house, but I didn't. could never make enough money. My parents were simple people so they didn't leave us anything but the house we lived in. Not long after that, I started working at a house."
"The Cabarets?"
"No, that's another one." Kaylin interrupted her words again.
"That's the hole you might mean. And I didn't know it was on the Phoenix turf."
"You are a member of Phoenix..."
"No, I just work there."
Since this was Kaylin's third time interrupting her, Fanny decided to let her speak, allowing her to tell her story without any interruption from her.
"Working in the territory of a mafia family doesn't automatically make you one of them. Many people who work in those territories don't even know they exist. The owners know, of course. , but most are just ordinary people trying to make a living. I didn't know anything until almost four years later." Kaylin continued, shifting her gaze to the main bar area, where she saw a waiter wiping some glasses.
"My sister sometimes comes to study in one of the back rooms while I work. She hates being alone at night so she prefers going to the club. We spent my break time together. It was a good thing until one of those Phoenix bastards saw her." Kaylin's voice deepened at the last sentence.
Fanny understood why Kaylin stopped to make eye contact with her. She was hazy about what was about to happen and she almost held her breath as if she were mentally preparing for the ugly truth.
"He raped her. He locked her in a room and..." Kaylin bit her lip and interrupted her as she reached for the bottle and drank it in an attempt to calm herself down.
Apparently, the incident changed Kaylin's life forever as Fanny witnessed a flurry of emotions flash across the girl's face.
She could almost feel the pain Kaylin was feeling but remained completely silent as she sat there.
"At the time I thought I could get justice in a straightforward way, you know? The owner told me not to do that, of course. He warned me that going to the police wouldn't help. It just made matters worse. He even told me who that bastard was. That he was a member of Phoenix and I shouldn't have gotten involved in this. But that didn't stop me."
Kaylin continued to pull out a pack of cigarettes from her leather jacket, taking a few seconds to stick a Marlboro between her red lips to ignite shortly afterward. "So it was. I called the police, took my sister with me, and we reported it." She explained while smoking.
"But it's true. It made things worse. And then one day..." She shivered slightly as she smoked another cigarette, eyes still avoiding Fanny, who was looking at her through tears.
"We were walking home from one of her cram classes late when we were attacked." She finished her cigarette and took out a second cigarette.
"My sister died that night. I think they thought I died too because they left me there, bleeding. But I'm not... I was found by a passerby and spent the next two weeks fighting. I fought for my life at the hospital. Then I knew I would never find peace until this guy died. I knew that if I found those who were going against Phoenix they would help. I find him and get revenge."
Fanny swallowed hard to soothe her parched throat.
"You found the Black Roses on your own?"
Finally, Kaylin turned to look at Fanny and met her gaze once more, her sad expression had now disappeared and was replaced by a glint of evil, the evil look Fanny had grown accustomed to was the expression of emotion she had just seen.
"They weren't easy to find, I had to dig deep and make lots of connections. I guess that's how I became the resourceful detective on our team." Kaylin let out a dry laugh.
"Anyway, I asked Vengo first because he was the team leader at the time. But he was against it. He didn't want to deal with me." She shrugged as she lifted the cigarette to her lips again and pulled it away, smoking.
"But Michel did. Off the record of course. Vengo never knew and still doesn't. He led me to him and allowed me to take revenge."
A sinister look crossed Kaylin's expression as she seemed to recall how she killed her sister's rapist.
At that moment, Fanny couldn't help but remember Michel telling her that if she wanted revenge on Archibald and Mr. Aiden, he will help her.
Therefore, she felt that she could perfectly put herself in Kaylin's shoes. When she thought about her father, she also felt a burning sensation to do some serious damage.
So, for Kaylin to see this as a fitting way to make peace with her sister's murder, doesn't seem too far-fetched to Fanny.
'Then Michel asked the owner of the Cabaret family to hire me."
"Is that how you two became friends?"
Kaylin pulled out a cigarette from the ashtray and thought about Fanny's question for a moment. "I wouldn't really call it friends. More than that, we've always had a common understanding and goals."
Fanny nodded at this answer. While she didn't want to mention the physical relationship Kaylin shared with Michel, she understood that even this had to be an agreement between the two.
"Why did Phoenix never catch you? Don't they know what you did?"
"Michel covered for me. They thought he killed that bastard and honestly, I don't care. I wanted to kill him myself and I did. That's important to me."
