As time went by, Sarah struggled with choosing between seeking justice for her mother's death and wanting to retaliate against Bobby Briggs for the pain he had inflicted on her.
During this chaos, she discovered surprising information about Bobby's questionable activities and his ties to the town's most notorious individual.
One night, Sarah was seated in her living room, her mind filled with thoughts, when she received a message on her phone from her grandfather. Curious, she decided to look inside and discovered a set of mysterious messages exposing Bobby's illegal actions and his connections to the infamous criminal kingpin, Marshall Briggs.
Sarah felt a combination of fear and determination as her heart raced while reviewing the evidence. She had long suspected Bobby's involvement in something shady, and now she had undeniable evidence.
Sarah, determined to reveal the truth and hold Bobby accountable, made the decision to contact Derrick, who is not only her trusted friend but also Bobby's brother. Although aware of the dangers, she understood that Derrick was her greatest opportunity to uncover Bobby's illegal activities and stop his oppressive rule.
Sarah held the phone tightly in her hand, the mysterious message a hot message in her palm. All her being demanded vengeance on Bobby Briggs, yet a fragment of logic restrained her. Seeking fairness for her mother. That's what she desired. But how can revenge accomplish that?
She took a deep breath before dialing Derrick's number. Months had passed since their last conversation, but he was the sole person she felt comfortable confiding this big news to. Each time the phone rang without being answered, it echoed the uncertainty eating away at her. At last, Derrick finally answered.
"Derrick?" Sarah's voice was barely a whisper.
"Sarah? Is that you?" A flicker of surprise crackled through the line.
"Yes," she said, her voice gaining strength. "I need your help."
'You leave me for months and that's the first thing you say when you call me?" Derrick said angrily.
'I don't have any explanation that'll suite you. I was suffering. I almost….. can we not talk about this now, please? Its not as important as the what I need your help with". Sarah pleaded.
"What kind of trouble are you in?" His tone sharpened.
Sarah hesitated. Could she trust him with the truth, the raw, burning truth about Bobby and her mother's death?
"It's Bobby," she blurted out. "He's involved in something… something big and dangerous. Bigger than we knew before."
Derrick sighed. He had information to ruin Bobby, but he needed solid proof for everything he had gathered. 'What can I do?"
Silence hung heavy on the line. Finally, Sarah sighed. "Meet me at the old diner on Elm Street at eight tonight. Come alone." And she ended the call.
According to her grandfather, Derrick was in her town for a meeting and instead of flying all the way to where he was, Mr Black and Sarah agreed it'll be best for her to see him here, where she was.
The next day, Sarah met with Derrick in a secluded diner, her hands trembling with nervous anticipation. The day before, she had contemplated whether it'll be good for her and the kids.
'He's the only person that can help me, or that knows how to help me." Sarah thought to herself.
What to do??
What to wear?
He looked older, his face etched with lines unseen in their younger days.
Seeing him made her miss everything about him. Could she do this? She thought. Shes hapoy she went with casual..
For Derrick, she had always been beautiful and now, she's more beautiful than the last time he saw her. He wondered what Bobby did that made Tiger, out of all people help her escape.
Derrick cleared his throat. 'How are you doing?" He asked, really wanting to know.
'I'm alright, thankyou. How about you?" Sarah returned.
"I'm alright too, Sarah," he began, his voice low. "Spill it. What's going on with Bobby?"
Sarah laid it all out: the cryptic messages, the suspicion gnawing at her for years, culminating in the shocking revelation. "He's worse than who I thought he was, Derrick. There's something bigger at play here, something connected to Marshall Briggs."
Derrick's eyebrows shot up. Marshall Briggs, the name hung heavy in the air, a specter of the town's underbelly. "Are you sure about this?"
"I have… evidence," Sarah said, pulling out her phone and showing him the cryptic messages.
Derrick studied them intently, his brow furrowed in concentration. "These messages are… cryptic, to say the least. But if they lead to Rossi, this is serious, Sarah. Very serious."
"I know," Sarah said, her voice tight. "But I can't just sit here and do nothing. My mom… she deserves justice."
Derrick reclined in his seat, meeting her eyes with his own. 'Sarah, there is a difference between justice and revenge. Justice involves revealing the truth and ensuring that those who are accountable are held responsible. Vengeance... can cloud your decision-making and guide you towards a grim direction."
Sarah stared at the chipped Formica tabletop, his words echoing in her mind. Justice. Revenge. They were two sides of the same coin, weren't they?
"I want to expose him, Derrick," Sarah finally said, her voice firm. "I want the world to know what he's done. But… how can we do this without putting ourselves in danger?"
"I need your help, Derrick," Sarah said, her eyes locking with his. "I need to bring Bobby down once and for all, but I can't do it alone."
Derrick studied Sarah for a moment, his expression unreadable. "You're playing a dangerous game, Sarah," he warned, his voice low. "But if you're willing to take the risk, I'll do everything in my power to help you."
A ghost of a smile played on Derrick's lips. "There are ways, Sarah. But first, we need a plan. A plan that's smart, not fueled by anger."
Sarah nodded, a sense of relief washing over her. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she wasn't fighting this battle alone.
'By the way, Bobby isn't your brother." Sarah confessed, making Derrick spill his drink on himself.
'That can't be true." Derrick said after he cleaned himself up.
'It is, actually. My grandfather, Mr Black, told me." Sarah answered.
'Mr Black? I've heard of him. One of the powerful men here." Derrick said, 'How is he your grandfather?" He asked skeptically.
Sarah remembered the whole story and just chuckled. 'I'll tell you that some other time, but he told me that Bobby is Marshall Briggs' son." She said as she recounted the conversation she had with her grandfather to Derrick.
Flashback….
'Flashback...
Sarah sat at the kitchen table, feeding Ethan his lunch as her grandfather, Mr. Black, joined her, his expression serious.
"Grandpa, what did you mean by Bobby isn't Mr. Duke's son?" Sarah asked, her curiosity piqued by her grandfather's cryptic statement he had said earlier on."
Mr. Black let out a deep sigh, his eyes looking far away as he started talking. "He is not the person he says he is, Sarah," he whispered softly. He is not Newton Duke's son, but the child of Marshall Briggs, a man whom Duke has been in a feud with for a long time.
Sarah was shocked by the revelation, her eyes wide in disbelief. "Why would Bobby deceive about such a thing?" she wondered, her mind filled with inquiries.
Mr. Black nodded solemnly, his face displaying seriousness. "It is all a part of a bigger plan, Sarah," he clarified. Marshall Briggs has been patiently waiting for the ideal moment to take action against Newton Duke and secure what he believes is rightfully his.
The idea of Bobby being part of such a cunning scheme made Sarah's stomach twist in discomfort. "Is Derrick or his Dad aware?" she inquired, fear evident in her quivering voice.
Mr. Black grabbed her hand firmly but gently. "No." - Negative. Bobby is more than just Marshall Briggs' son, Sarah," he said, his voice filled with worry. He is also a pawn for him, a tool to be utilized against the Dukes in their continuing quarrel.
Sarah was hit by a wave of nausea when she understood what her grandfather's words meant. "Wait, Bobby has been deceiving them this entire time?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Mr. Black sadly nodded. "I believe so, Sarah," he stated, his voice serious. However, you are more powerful than you think. "You have the ability to escape his control and prevent him from causing more damage."
Sarah faced her grandfather with a strong resolve, her determination fueling her. She promised with determination that Bobby or Marshall Briggs would not ruin her family.
Mr. Black smiled with pride at his granddaughter, his eyes gleaming with admiration. "I am confident that you won't, Sarah," he spoke with certainty. "You are Black, and Black people do not shy away from a confrontation."
With those words echoing in her mind, Sarah felt prepared to confront any obstacles that may come her way, supported by her family and the power of honesty.
