Trevor pt. 1 "What's his name?" "Huh?"
"The guy you're thinking about making it hard for you to focus on what I'm saying, what's his name?"
"There's no guy" "That's a lie"
"There's no guy ma" I sit across the counter facing her as she cooks "Silas I know you, there's a guy and I want to know his name"
I've been keeping a secret and now on a random day I'm about to come clean to my mom, I need to
admit this to someone before I lose it "Trevor"
Stopping she puts the knife down looking up at me, of course, what she does next I completely
expected. Laughing at the top of her lungs she hits the counter "Trevor your best friend?" She asks in the midst of her laughter "yeah right"
"I'm not kidding mom" I arch my eyebrows that's my tell when it's serious
Her laugh dies "Silas... no that's-" she doesn't even know how to react "why would you torture yourself like that?"
"I don't know"
"When did this happen?" She stares at me
"There was no big realization it was just something that was inevitable, he's good to me and it never makes sense that I can't keep one boyfriend but he's always there no matter what."
"That's what a friend is honey, it's always nice that Trevor's here for you but you've always known he was straight plus he's chasing that girl next door, right? What's her face"
"It's Paris"
"God, how pretentious do you have to be to name your child Paris?"
"I don't care how he feels about her and plus I'm not sure he's so straight, he once told me he had a dream where he and I went all the way"
"Please don't tell me stuff like that Silas" she makes a face. "Why are you even telling me this now? It seems like you've known how you felt for a while"
"I couldn't hold it in any longer, I'm honestly going to explode mom I can't handle watching him date another girl and be the person he divulges to when it goes horribly wrong. I need someone to divulge about this to too, but I can't just complain to Trevor about himself." My mom looks at me with a smile on her face "I'm glad you can smile at a time like this"
"You know I'm always on your side no matter what and of course I'd be happy if this happened for you I love Trevor he'd be perfect for you, you're already so close. But the fact remains he's never
showed any kind of interest like that in you, has he? And you can't just mistake your friendship and the fact that he treats you a certain way for more than it is."
"It's so hard not to though! I mean I don't think I can start my day until I hear his raspy voice down the stairs yelling at me to let's go" I honestly love the sound of his voice, it's like a manly rasp but he always has a sunshine like tone, so happy to be alive unlike the rest of us who just can't wait to wake up dead.
"Or when he walks in yelling WAKE UP BENSONS even though it's like 2 in the afternoon" she laughs "So you get it?"
She nods "of course I do" and continues her cooking as we talk. "So what are you going to do?" "This, I haven't thought further than telling you I'm not going to tell him that'd be stupid"
"I agree-" "Wow"
"But! It could also be a good thing if you told him, to see if he felt the same" "Or I tell him and he completely disowns me I can't have that"
"Then don't tell him"
"But I have to!" I frown "mom I can't go another day seeing him with someone who isn't me it'll kill me!"
"You know what this is?" "Don't say teen angst"
"It's teen angst," she says even though I told her not to
"Mom all my dilemmas aren't teen angst ok they're just problems like any other problem" "I'm sorry you like your best friend and he doesn't know..."
"Regular problem"
"Teen Angst." Annoyed I roll my eyes giving up.
"EVERYONE STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING!" We hear Trevor shout from the front door "Guess I'll stop making dinner"
"No Helen never stop making dinner but listen," he says walking towards us "guess who finally said yes to going out"
"Paris?" I guess in the wrong tone
"Wow be a little happier for you best friend Silas! She said yes!"
"I'm sorry I meant yay" my mom looks at me with an obvious you hate this glare, and she's absolutely right I hate this.
"Here's the plan I need you to come over my house tonight and help me set up the backyard, I got these cheesy twinkle lights to hang up everywhere because girls like that stuff and the garden is looking exceptional, thanks for the pointers Helen."
"You're welcome"
"I can't help you I have homework"
"But you did those already, right honey?" Really mom? Are you really doing this to me? "Uh well I didn't finish"
"So you lied to me?" I know she's messing with me but I honestly want to cry right now "No, I-"
"So you're lying to me then?" I turn to Trevor who's frowning and as much as I don't want to do this I
just can't seem to hurt his feelings
"Actually you know what I think I did do'em all so sure I'll help you impress Paris, because what else would I be doing on a Friday night."
"Sensed a little sarcasm there but I'll take it!" He sits on the stool next to me "so what are we having?" He looks at my mom and I asking with a smile.
—
"What's going on with you?" Trevor asks as I watch him hang the lights in his backyard and I sit on the steps of his deck
"Nothing"
"Lie! You've been quiet all night, you pissed at me about something?" Yes! "No"
"Is this teen angst?" He smirks teasing "Stop" I sigh
