While in bed after dinner watching anime on his computer, Garret's phone vibrates and he picks it up. Seeing the text from Porter he opens it
'XF400 not the best one but it's my favorite' smiling at the text Garret replies 'Did you look that up just to impress me?'
'Maybe'
'Did it work?'
'You don't have to do this you know' 'Do what?'
'Try so hard, I already like you the problem is getting over you'
'Garret I don't want you to get over me. Not without giving me a chance first'
'What's the point? You already admitted you're not who I need you to be and I'm completely ok with that'
'I know what I said but what if I changed my mind?' 'About?'
'What if I want to be who you need?'
Unsure of how to reply Garret reads the question over and over, how is this even happening? How is it possible that he's pined after Porter for so long, but the moment he's sure he's ready to move on Porter Jackson wants a chance. Garret's so confused he's not even sure how to feel, is Porter even being serious? Does he really want the A/V geek to give him a chance?
Next day while he's in his room putting his socks on with his door open, Porter stands at the entrance of the door without saying a word.
Noticing a pair of shoes in his doorway Garret looks up and sees the boy. "Good morning" Porter greets with a smile
"It's noon actually," Garret replies standing up "Ok good noon then"
"Good noon to you too."
Porter continues to watch Garret get ready "you know I'm really digging your new look, seems very effortless"
"You mean basic?" He turns to Porter who shrugs with a smile, "ever got your wardrobe changed completely against your will before?"
Porter shakes his head "my mom's reason being I'm a senior who still dressed like a 9th grader." Trying not to laugh Porter replies "Mrs. Philbin means well." Garret is done getting ready "what's the
plan?" Porter asks and Garret looks at him, "I mean it's a Saturday and you're clearly going
somewhere."
"Basketball game at school" Garret replies
"Really?" He chuckles "didn't take you for the sports type"
"I'm not but my friends and I have to tape them, one of the requirements of A/V club" "You've gone to all the games?"
Garret nods "tournaments, championships, and cheer competitions. Home and away"
"That's so cool Garret" "I guess."
"Mind if I come?"
As Garret walks to the door he stops in front of Porter, "it's your school I wouldn't be able to stop you" with a smile he walks past Porter leaving his room.
Porter walks into Harper's room as she's doing her makeup, "we should go to the basketball game at school today." Garret hears him ask Harper before heading down the stairs.
"Uh no everyone's meeting us at your house, barbecue and beers, remember? Why the fuck would we pass that up to go to some lame ass game at school?"
While in the gym with his friends Garret is in his element doing what he does best, when he's holding a camera there's nothing he'll miss.
From every shot made to every reaction from the crowd. As his camera is pointed at the students and parents in the bleachers, Garret is surprised when he spots Porter sitting in the midst of the crowd staring right at him. With a smile, Porter waves at his camera and Garret quickly pulls away going back to the game.
After the game as they're walking back to the room Garret, Alexis, and Reggie stop and turn when they hear "hey!" They turn to see Porter Jackson walking towards them, Alexis and Reggie ditches Garret who waits for Porter.
"You didn't have to come"
"Are you kidding?" Porter stops in front of him "had to see it for myself, I can't believe you've been doing this the whole time and I never noticed."
"I can" Garret replies. "Came alone?"
He nods "everyone including your sister is at my house having a barbecue, but I couldn't miss this." Garret doesn't say anything so Porter asks "when you're done here would you want to go to my house? Have a beer and some poorly made barbecue"
"Um" Garret finds the invitation nice but the thought of hanging out with Porter's friends including his own sister, doesn't sound fun for him. "I'm good but thanks" he politely declines
Porter watches him turn about to walk away, "then how about this? I know a great taco place not too far from here, get lunch with me?"
Garret turns contemplating the offer "I won't make you pay if you don't like the tacos" "Where is it?"
"I can text you the address"
"Ok I have to drop off my camera, then meet you there"
"Perfect" Porter grins immediately taking out his phone and texting Garret.
At the taco restaurant, Porter and Garret sit across each other, while they wait for their food Porter realizes something. "You know you don't seem like yourself at all"
"What do you mean?"
"For as long as I've known you, it's always felt like you made it your life's mission to never say more than three sentences to me. Now we can have a conversation and you look at me in the eyes, and not avoid them like you usually do"
"I think that the way I felt about you made you really intimidating, I mean it was never your fault I just knew that avoiding you was easier than talking to you and pretending not to feel anything."
"Well now that the truth's out you seem very comfortable"
Garret scoffs "I wouldn't say comfortable, I just don't have anything to hide behind anymore." What Porter's noticing is right, Garret has a confidence he's been lacking and Porter thinks maybe
that's because of him, but Garret knows it's because he wanted to change. Coming out with his feelings for Porter didn't feel like the change he meant he needed when he made that announcement to his family. But since Porter's known the truth, it's felt like Garret could actually move on with his life. He can have an actual free senior year not being suppressed by secrets.
When their food is finally out Porter starts, "ok you have to be completely honest, if these aren't the best tacos you've ever had then lunch is on me." He watches as Garret picks one up and takes a bite, after he chews Porter asks "well?"
