I cheated on my husband with Leo, my assistant of two years.
And all of this was arranged by my husband.
I was leisurely sipping my coffee after wrapping up my work when Leo burst into my office, brow furrowed. The news he delivered made me choke mid-sip.
I coughed violently, coffee burning my throat.
After catching my breath, I stared at my supposed affair partner with narrowed eyes.
"Run that by me again?"
"Ms. Morgan, the whole company is buzzing about us..."
Leo shifted uncomfortably, clearly as blindsided by these allegations as I was.
"Well, isn't that fascinating,"
I remarked dryly, taking another sip from my cup.
Apparently, I was sleeping with this handsome young man standing before me, and somehow we were both completely oblivious to our own affair!
Leo took an awkward step closer, lowering his voice.
"Ms. Morgan, I... do you think it's because we've been working so closely together?"
"How far has this rumor spread?"
I asked, giving him a once-over. I was starting to see why someone would cast him as my lover in this little drama.
Leo had joined the company as my assistant two years ago. He was exceptionally competent—earning three raises in that time—and undeniably easy on the eyes.
Whoever started this rumor knew exactly what they were doing.
"Everyone from department heads down to security guards is gossiping about it. I haven't been able to pinpoint the source yet."
"I've had a few trusted colleagues quietly ask around. So far, it seems contained within the company walls."
The situation wasn't catastrophic—yet. We just needed to find the source and squash this nonsense.
The problem was that the gossip had already infected the entire office. I couldn't tell if the target was Leo or myself.
"Alright, you can go now." I waved him off, my mind already racing.
"Damn, I hope we don't have a mole in the company..."
I thought, drumming my fingers on the desk.
"Leo, wait!"
I called out just as his hand touched the doorknob.
"Dig around quietly. See if there have been any recent hires or transfers that might explain this."
"On it, Ms. Morgan. I'll report back the second I find anything."
The moment Leo closed the door behind him, my phone buzzed against the desk.
"Hey babe, what's up?" I answered, trying to sound casual.
Chris never called during this hour—his office always had morning meetings locked in.
"Emily..."
His voice was strained, hesitant.
My stomach dropped. Somehow, the rumor had already reached him.
"Chris, whatever you've heard—Leo and I are just colleagues. Nothing more."
"I want to believe you, Emily, but seeing is believing! How could you do this? I want a divorce. And I'm taking our daughter—clearly you can't be trusted to care for her."
"Beep—Beep—"
Before I could get another word in, Chris hung up. I stood frozen, phone still pressed against my ear, my mind reeling.
*Seeing is believing?* What the hell had he seen? And how?
Chris was typically the definition of calm and collected. Why was he suddenly acting so impulsively, not even giving me a chance to defend myself?
If he'd given me just ten more seconds, I could have cleared this whole mess up.
I immediately tried calling back, but got nothing but a busy signal.
He must be in a meeting now.
Fine. I'd explain after I got to the bottom of this mess.
