Brynn's POV
*tw: emotional abuse elements*
"We aren't doing this out here for the whole Fae kingdom to listen in. Where else can we go?" I asked Arlen, noticing the crowd we were attracting.

"We can take her to the conference room. Anthony, can you restrain yourself?" Arlen asked him.
"I'll have to, won't I?" Anthony snarked. He looked like he was about to kill Mindi right there.
"Anthony Starr, I will remind you that this is solely about who my mate is and how to help her help us. I empathize with you wanting some much deserved closure, but I must remind you not only have you been given a second chance, but about the new family you have with your beautiful mate." Mindi instantly whipped her head around.
"Wait, is it that blonde you were with when y'all got me arrested!? Don't tell me you and her procreated!!" Mindi spat, and I immediately slapped her across the face.
"The next time I will punch you, so don't push it!!" I shouted at her and walked over to Anthony.
"Anthony, I need to talk to you for a minute." I grabbed his arm and pulled him aside. I need to make sure his tension is not going to affect us questioning Mindi. Otherwise, he can't be a part of it.

"I know what this is about, Queen Brynn. And honestly, I'd feel much better if you tapped me out now." I wasn't expecting that, and it must have shown in my face.
"With all due respect, I have way too much rage towards Mindi. Not just about her rejection of me but with Jade, and practically giving my daughter's ra***t free access to her. I'll do more harm than good if I'm in there and it won't get you any closer to the answers you seek. Sometimes, we need to put our egos aside." Anthony respectfully said and bowed his head. Disgust hit me right in the gut. As much as I wanted him to elaborate, I just didn't have the time.
"I can see that. You will sit outside. Aiden will be in there with us if we need him." Arlen nodded in agreement. All of us made our way to the conference room. Mindi was seated at the very end with Aiden standing guard, which she immediately took grievance about.
"I don't see why y'all have to have him in my face like this!"

"Mama, this is going to go less painfully if you keep your commentary to yourself and answer our questions. Now shut up." Jade asserted herself with ease.
"Mindi, first things first. Where is your mother?" I began.
"Now how in the hell should I know that! I told y'all last time I saw her, I was fifteen years old!" Mindi huffed. Aiden brought the black smoke from his fingertips and Mindi visibly recoiled.
"Let me rephrase. When was the last time you heard from your mother?"
"I'm telling you the truth, damn it! Look, I was tired of Mama's men, tired of her turning t***ks, tired of those men pawing at me. One day, one of the men went way too far and Mama did nothing! So I ran away! I was in and out of runaway shelters and when I turned eighteen, I had to turn t***ks myself to survive until I met Anthony!" Mindi sobbed. Just a twinge of pity flooded through me. But Mindi was known to put on acts, so I wasn't sure about this.
"Mindi, my mother told me her parents' names were Julie and Phil. They died when she was sixteen. Did Eva raise you and Beth together or do you know if Beth was adopted?" Mindi looked at me with wide eyes.
"Sweet Lord, that must have been the Hennemans. They were a couple that lived in the apartment above us! They were really nice too!" Mindi softly said, and I immediately knew she was telling the truth. I purposely withheld my adoptive grandparents' last names from Arlen, to see if Mindi even knew it.
"I want to make sure I have this right. You left home as a teenager, and left your eleven-year-old little sister with your s*x worker mother?" Jade clarified, unable to disguise the edge in her voice.
"I tried to take her with me. Beth wouldn't go, she said she'd go to the Hennemans if things got too bad with Mama. She was very close with them, and I'd make her go upstairs if I saw Mama bringing a man home. Even if my own mother didn't spare me, I could spare my sister. I made her promise the first time Mama put make-up on her to get the hell out of there." Jade gripped the table until her knuckles were white as paper.
"You protected your sister, but you didn't protect me!" Jade hissed at her.
"David told me you came onto him, Jade! I believed him, I figured you were becoming a woman and doing woman's things!"
"Christ above it's a good thing Anthony isn't in here right now!" Aiden muttered. I had to second that.
"But I told you just what he had done to me! YOU chose to believe your daughter's r****t! But we all know why, don't we Mama? You had over five million reasons to believe David!" Jade snarled at her and began to glow a bright green.
"Jade, please, we need to refocus. We are cousins and I desperately need answers about myself!" I begged her and finally, Jade started to calm down.
"You're absolutely right, Queen Brynn. I apologize." Jade bowed her head in respect.
"Queen...you are mated to Arlen here, aren't you?" Mindi asked me.
"I am."
"Do you have any information about where we can find your mother and our grandmother, Evangeline Deveaux?" I cut right to the chase.
"A few years back, I got an address for her. She ended up in some nursing home in Baton Rouge. Weeping Willow something or other. I don't even know if she's still alive." I looked to Aiden, who nodded Mindi was telling the truth.
"Thank you. Arlen, can you take that to Anthony and have him look into it please?" I asked Arlen.
"What about the Hennemans, Phil and Julie?" This is why I absolutely love my mate.
"Good thinking, my love. Yes, please check into them too. I want to know how my mother ended up with them." I turned back to Mindi.
"What can you tell me about my mother back then?"
Mindi started to tear up. "Beth was a pure soul. I tried to protect her so much. I hated to leave her like that, but the way things were going, Mama was going to get me killed! I'm sure glad she ended up with the Hennemans. Was she happy, Brynn?"
I almost teared up myself. "She was. She and my father were very much in love. I had a wonderful upbringing." I assured her.
Mindi smiled a bit, looking almost like my mother. "I'm glad of that." She then turned to Jade.
"Jade, I know you have questions. You asked me so long ago if I hated you. I didn't hate you, but I hate how you came to be." Mindi wiped tears from her eyes.
"Mama, what do you mean?" Jade's eyes widened in alarm.
"With Faes, they can get their women pregnant using their marks. I didn't want to get pregnant right away! I wanted time to be married, get settled, and he impregnated me without telling me what he was doing first!" She broke down in sobs and I turned to Aiden, who looked puzzled and upset.
"Should we get Anthony in here to discuss this?" Aiden asked me.
"Yes, I think Jade deserves some answers herself." I commanded, and he called Anthony in to sit down. Anthony made sure to sit far across the table from Mindi.
"Mindi just told us something perplexing. That on your wedding night, you forced her to ovulate and get pregnant. Is this true?" I asked him.
"Mindi, I thought you understood what I did. I explained it to you when we made love that night!" Anthony countered.
"After it was already too late!! I was twenty years old, I was screwed up enough, and you forced me to have a baby long before I was ready Anthony!!"
"But you didn't even tell me about your mother or anything about your family Mindi! How was I supposed to know your traumas and help you through them if you didn't open up!!"
"You see? All about YOU! You couldn't see my sadness! But Finn, he SAW ME! He knew I wasn't happy and was slowly dying inside, a baby growing inside me that I was having a hard time accepting! Finn helped me and it became more. He didn't tell me Anthony, what it was doing to you when we were together. Either way, at the end of the day? You took my choice from me when you knocked me up! And no matter what you tell yourself, that's MY TRUTH!" Anthony immediately stood up and stormed out, and Mindi continued.
"Jade, I was a complete abysmal wreck back then, and I still am. The last thing I ever wanted was to bring a child into this world and mess them up the way my mother messed me up! Then Anthony took that choice from me!! And God, I failed so very miserably with you! I was a horrible mother, and please don't say I wasn't, because I'm well aware I was. I did not make good choices, I was selfish and I damn sure didn't put you first. But one thing you can say, Jade? I never once brought a man around you until Tom Bradshaw! I left you alone a lot, or with friends, but until him, I never let a man around you." Mindi affirmed to her. Jade nodded in agreement.
"It's true. She was an absent mother, but she didn't do that." Jade confirmed to us.
"I'm sorry I didn't believe you about David. You're right, I let the money blind me. I was terrified of being back on the streets once again turning t***ks. I let my past guide me and figured you would survive because I had survived so much worse. And Oh God Jade, I am so so sorry!" Mindi broke down putting her head in her hands. Aiden stared at her and looked at me, nodding his head to let me know Mindi's remorse was genuine.
Jade stood up and walked over to her mother, taking her hand in hers. "I forgive you, Mama. I forgave you a long time ago. Thank you for giving me some closure. I wish you all the peace in the world. But this is the last time you will see me." Jade wiped her tears from her face, then stood up and walked out of the room.
Mindi turned to me, frantic worry in her eyes. "You have to get her back for me! I want to know my daughter and know my grandbabies!!"
Sure Mindi looked genuine, but Jade had already spoken all she was going to say. "Mindi, I can't do that. Jade said all there was to say. I can see you have had some time to reflect on things and have seen where you went wrong, but Jade has children of her own she is trying to protect. A lot has happened, and you said it yourself, you still are very messed up." Tears ran down Mindi's eyes.
Arlen came back into the conference room. "Well, I have somewhat good news. Evangeline "Eva" Deveaux is in fact still alive. And from all accounts, very coherent. Do you want to meet her, Brynn?"
I stared at Mindi. "What do you think?"
"She's poison, Brynn. Much worse than me."
Arlen got in Mindi's face and smirked. "That's why Aiden and I are going too."
