Chloe's mother and Ethan locked eyes for a split second.
Then Ethan's burning glare fixed on me.
"Only a handful of people knew Chloe was gone. Did you leak it?" His accusation was raw.
I spread my hands in a casual shrug.
"Don't look at me like that. I'm just honoring what was best for Chloe. Donating organs to saves lives—doesn't that make her death meaningful?"
"Besides," I added smoothly, gesturing towards the medical staff, "Chloe signed that donor agreement herself. Clearly, she believed in this cause."
"You vile bitch!" Chloe's mother shrieked, her voice cracking.
"You stole her man while she's alive, and now you want to butcher her body in death!"
She lunged forward, fingers clawing at my collar, her free hand swinging wildly for my face.
I caught her wrist firmly in mid-air.
"Control yourself," I said, my voice dangerously calm, though my grip was iron.
"Your kin is live-streaming right now. Organ donation is a noble sacrifice. Shouldn't you feel proud as her family? Why stop it? Unless… you have something to hide?"
My eyes flicked purposefully towards the streamer's phone.
Her mother froze, her own gaze darting towards the recording device, a flicker of panic erasing her rage.
"Th-that's nonsense! My daughter is gone! I just want her left in peace..."
Seeing things spiraling out of control, Ethan quickly stepped between us, forcibly pulling me back.
The force almost have sent me sprawling.
"Claire," he spat. His voice was thick with revulsion as he held my arm.
"You sicken me. Chloe is dead. Can't you just let her rest?'
Before I could reply, Sophie erupted.
Her small fists pummeled my legs, sharp kicks landed on my shins.
"Evil woman! I'll kill you for ruining Mommy's funera and stealing my Daddy!" she screamed, with her face contorted.
I bent down, grabbing Sophie's flailing arms firmly, forcing her to meet my gaze and staring at her.
"Say that again. Who is your daddy?"
My voice was low and deadly serious.
Her venomous glare faltered.
Tremors ran through her face, fear finally choked off her vitriol.
She couldn't speak.
Ethan was distressed. He roughly pulled the trembling girl into his arms, shielding her.
"Claire!" he roared, his own temper snapping.
"That's too far! I never imagined you could be this cruel! We're done. I want a divorce!"
A memory flashed.
In my past self, I loved him desperately, always caving, always yielding during these fights... right up to my miserable, betrayed end.
This time?
I straightened, crossing my arms, a chilling indifference settling over me.
"Fine, see you at courthouse tomorrow. You will leave with nothing." My words were clipped and final.
Ethan froze, completely blindsided by my immediate, cold agreement.
His mouth opened, then shut.
"We must proceed with organ recovery for Ms. Evans. Time is critical. Please, everyone, stand aside!"
The lead doctor's voice cut through the chaos, authoritative and urgent.
Seizing the momentary distraction, two of the white-coated team pushed gently but firmly past the still-reeling Chloe's mother, reaching for the open casket.
"NO! STOP!"Chloe's mother screamed in pure terror.
She threw herself bodily over the coffin like a shield.
"I won't let you touch her! I'll die before you take my daughter!"
I stepped forward instantly, my expression feigning righteous outrage. "
Ma'am! What are you doing? You're stopping your own daughter from becoming a hero!"
At that precise moment, unnoticed by the distraught crowd, I saw that Chloe's fists inside the coffin clenched so tightly her knuckles were white.
Her entire body trembled with suppressed fury, practically vibrating, barely containing the explosion brewing within.
She was furious.
"GET OUT! YOU WITCH! I'LL KILL YOU! THIS IS ALL YOUR DOING!"
Chloe's mother screamed, her voice raw and demonic as she pushed herself off the coffin and lunged towards me again, eyes wide with murderous intent.
I gave the nearest medical staff an almost imperceptible nod.
Understanding flashed in their eyes, immediately, two strong members stepped forward, expertly intercepting Chloe's mother and restraining her arms.
"Ma'am, please calm down and cooperate," one said firmly.
Simultaneously, the other two swiftly reached into the open casket to begin the recovery process.
Chloe's mother shrieked, wrenching herself free with unnatural strength.
In a panic, she grabbed a ceremonial knife from the nearby flower-laden table and pressed its point against her own throat.
Her eyes were wild.
"If you dare to touch her, and I die right here! I swear it!", she choked out.
"You'll have my blood on your hands!"
"CLAIRE!" Ethan roared, clutching Sophie tightly. His face was a mask of twisted fury.
"Is someone's death what you want? Just to prove your point? If she dies because of you now, you're nothing but a murderer!"
"That woman is despicable! Desecrating the dead!" a voice cried.
"Pure hatred! She won't let the dust settle!"
"She's courting karma!" another hissed.
The room buzzed with horrified condemnation.
The streamer's phone angle subtly shifted, capturing it all. Theviews undoubtedly surging.
Just as the wave of vilification threatened to drown me, a stunned shout ripped through the commotion, silencing everything.
"SHE'S ALIVE!"
Every head snapped towards the coffin.
Chloe Evans, unable to endure the unfolding horror of her own organs being harvested a second longer, sat bolt upright, pushed by sheer rage and terror.
Her finger stabbed the air directly at me, her face a mask of incandescent fury.
"CLAIRE! YOU B****!"
she gasped, the dam of pretense finally shattering.
"I NEVER SIGNED ANY ORGAN DONOR FORM!"
