The investigation results and the recovered chat logs were delivered to Matteo's house the next day.
He had repurchased every single one of Evelyn's belongings, placing them back exactly where they used to be. Every time he came home, he could almost fool himself into believing she was still there.
However, there was no coming back. The entire estate was lifeless without Evelyn, as if it had been drained of its soul.
Matteo spent a long time gathering the courage before finally opening the files.
The latest message was from the day Evelyn left. It was a secretly recorded video of him and Rebecca sharing a soft kiss in front of the piano.
Rebecca had attached a caption. "You probably don't know this, but this is Matty's favorite place. I won't record what happens next. I don't think you'd be able to handle it.
"Tell me, do you really think playing dumb helps? How does it feel being the mistress? Well, you've been a mistress your whole life, but hey, if you beg me nicely, maybe I'll let Matty visit you a few more times."
The more he scrolled up, the worse it got.
The chat was filled with nothing but mockery.
Countless intimate photos and videos of him and Rebecca were sent just to torment Evelyn.
As for Rebecca's social media, it was posts filled with public displays of affection that only Evelyn could see.
Rage clouded Matteo's vision.
But when he opened the folder with the rest of the investigation results, his fury froze in place. His whole body went rigid, his blood turning ice-cold.
Rebecca had hired the thugs from the auction that night herself.
That night, he had shoved Evelyn to the ground. He had ignored the blood dripping down her forehead. He had even forced her to drink when she physically couldn't.
Then, he remembered the sorrow in her eyes and her soft chuckles after listening to his self-righteous accusations.
Matteo's heart clenched violently.
A second later, it was like something inside him had been ripped open. Pain shot through his chest, sharp enough to leave him gasping.
"Bring Rebecca here!" His voice was so cold it could have frozen over.
Rebecca was dragged in moments later.
The scattered photos on the floor told her everything she needed to know.
Her face went deathly pale.
She dropped to her knees, crawling toward Matteo with desperation.
"Matty, I'm sorry. I know I did things I shouldn't have, but I only did them because I love you. It was because I love you that I lost control and said those things to her. But at the end of the day, I just wanted to stand beside you, openly and rightfully!"
Matteo sneered. He gripped Rebecca's jaw so tightly that bruises immediately bloomed on her skin.
"I have told you more than once that I'm not allowed to help you in front of Eve. Don't you understand? Now that you've driven her away, it's time for you to face the consequences."
With that, he shoved her aside without mercy.
But Rebecca crawled back, her eyes red-rimmed, her voice shaking. "Matty, I'm pregnant with your child! Please, for the baby's sake, just let me go this once!"
But the man before her didn't even spare her a glance. His tone was indifferent.
"Of course, I know you're pregnant. But so what? It's just a child. If I wanted one, I could have as many as I pleased.
"And besides, getting rid of the one you're carrying now will make it easier for you to have that other man's child later, won't it?"
