I stopped talking.
Vivian's breathing hitched on the other end.
"Owen's telling the truth? Leo, did you seduce me? Just for revenge?"
"Mrs. Garcia, Mr. Martinez is lying! I'm not his brother! He pushed me, tried to kill me! Don't believe him!"
"Wait, I'll find out. Truth or lie, you can't hide—" Their argument cut off.
A sickening crash echoed down the line.
Followed by Leo's cry of pain.
"Vivian! Are you okay?"
"Vivian! Can you hear me?"
My voice turned urgent.
I called twice. Silence. Leo's faint moans faded.
I hung up.
My heart hammered.
I dialed 911, then sped towards Vivian's last known location.
This was a gamble. I didn't know if I'd win.
Just like years ago, after Joan's bankruptcy, unsure if she still had fight left.
I'd just used my father's account to send her videos about depression, suicide.
After Joan and Leon died, police questioned my father.
He said the divorce left him depressed, suicidal; he watched those videos.
Sending them to Joan? Hoping for pity.
Joan and Leon were ruled suicides. No link to my father.
This time, I was sure Vivian's crash wasn't my fault.
I'd just stated facts.
Admittedly, my timing was... coincidental.
Vivian was just... unlucky.
Arriving at the crash scene, police were already there.
They told me Vivian and Leo were rushed to the hospital, critical.
They added, sympathetically, Vivian likely wouldn't make it.
I nodded, feigning devastation, then drove to the hospital.
"Owen! Leo said you called my daughter while she crashed! What couldn't wait? Why torment her over the phone?"
"Did you wantmy daughter dead?"
"You knew she carried Leo's child! Seven years with you, barren! You envied Leo! You hated her! You wanted them both dead!"
Vivian's mother, Linda Zhang, charged at me the moment I arrived.
She scratched, hit, tried to force me down like before – to pressure me into IVF, fertility shots, accepting Leo.
This time, I didn't have to endure her.
The last shreds of civility vanished with Vivian's betrayal.
"Vivian accused me! I called to clear my name!"
"If a phone call kills, what does that make me? A super-assassin?"
"How are Vivian and Leo? I need to speak to the doctors. Calm down. Maybe they're okay?"
I pushed Linda away, looking towards the ER.
Just then, doctors stopped resuscitation, pulling a sheet over Vivian's face.
"I'm sorry. We did all we could. We lost both mother and child."
The ER doctor emerged, his expression heavy.
Linda collapsed to the floor.
"What about Leo? How is he? He was Vivian's lover, the baby's father. Please, save him!"
My words hung in the air.
Medical staff stared, shocked.
