Back home,Nathan stared at the empty house.
Without turning on the light,he lay on the couch in his coat.
In the three years I was gone, every trace of our shared life had been replaced.
His expression grew colder.
He stormed to the storage room, digging out our wedding photo from under a pile of trash.
But after years of neglection,my face in the photo was faded and unrecognizable.
As if the love we shared had been discarded and erases just as easily.
How funny, that the man who never visited me was now toughing the photo, murmuring,"Sara, see me one more time, please?"
But the room was silent, there was no reply.
Nathan threw on his coat and went out despite the icy wind.
He went to the Chinese restaurant we loved.
I hadn't been there in years, and neither had he,it seemed.
The owner recognized him, greeting,"Haven't seen you and your girlfriend in ages.Same beef porridge?"
Nathan forced a smile,nodding."Same as always.Not girlfriend—wife."
As the owner served the porridge,he teased,"Next time you both come,it's on the house."
Tears fell into the steaming bowl.
Nathan's voice was hoarse,a bitter laugh."I'll never see her again."
I reached for his tears but I could tough nothing. My hand went right through his body
Nathan's act made it seem like he loved me deeply.
I watched his act of regret coldly, feeling only pity for myself.
He was starting to feel remorse.
When Nathan returned home,Evelyn was crouched at his door.
Her face was haggard and pale, her once-delicate features weathered.
Seeing Nathan, she threw herself at him."Nathan, let me go.You told my family and my kindergarten job about my scandal.I'm unemployed now and my family's ashamed. We were so happy—do you really want to ruin my life?"
Nathan looked at her with disgust, shaking off her hand."You had the nerve to get pregnant and sleep with another man,to seduce your therapist's husband.I’m sure you’ll survive one way or another?"
Nathan blamed Evelyn for his betrayal and my death, not himself.
I saw his self-righteous"devotion"nothing but ridiculous.
Evelyn sobbed pitifully, fragile."Nathan, forgive me.That man forced himself onto me that night. You're the only one in my heart."
Nathan's eyes reddened with rage.He grabbed her chin, slapping her sharply."Sara and I ended up like this because of you.If you hadn't seduced me,I wouldn't have thought I loved you.I wouldn't have spared even a glance at an idiot like you!"
Evelyn trembled, her eyes flashing with hatred."Why blame me?You chose to betray Sara!If not me,it'd be some other woman. You're no saint yourself!"
Nathan's smile turned sinister, chilling in the dark."Let's see if you’ll spend the rest of your life scavenging trash.Maybe try tprostitution."
Evelyn's eyes blazed. She pulled a razor from her bag, stabbing it into Nathan's throat.
Blood sprayed.
Nathan gurgled, choking on blood with disbelief in his eyes.
Evelyn was sentenced to ten years for assault.
Nathan's vocal cords were severely damaged, leaving him unable to speak normally.
I watched his collapse, feeling neither hate nor pity, only a flicker of satisfaction in my heart.
The once eloquent lawyer—how could he ever imagine himself ending up like this one day?
Nathan knelt, clutching Caleb's sleeve, trying to ask where I was buried.
Caleb kicked him in the chest.
Heavy rain soaked Nathan's hair.
Drenched,he sat on the ground, his voice distorted."Sara,I was wrong. Please see me in my dream, please."
"Sara,I was a bastard.I shouldn't have thought you'd never leave me."
Nathan realized, too late, that he still loved me.
Perhaps my love gave him the freedom to hurt me.
Only when he lost me forever did he see how vile his infidelity was.
No one in this world would ever loved Nathan like I did.
I found the man I loved only pathetic.
In the three years I longed for him,he held another woman in his arms, forgetting me completely.
Now,he wanted me to see him one last time.
If there's a next life,I don't want to meet Nathan again.
I only hope to reunite with Caleb someday.
