His grief felt like a mockery.
“If you’d come to the hospital, she might still be alive.”
“Your colleagues, friends, begged you.YBut all you cared about was Emily. You ignored their calls and blocked their numbers. That’s why she’s dead.”

Something snapped.Like a cornered beast,he roared,“If you hadn’t killed Emily out of jealousy,none of this would’ve happened!”
“It’s your fault,you murderer!”
I was stunned.
Even now,Ethan was refusing to take responsibility, blaming everyone else.
He was avoiding a truth he couldn't bear to face.
I ignored him, directing workers to dig a grave for Margaret’s urn.

I salvaged what ashes I could;the rest merged with the earth.
Ethan watched,eyes red.
Margaret raised him alone, giving him the best education, love, and support through his PhD.
His life had been relatively easy until Emily moved abroad, which was the biggest setback he’d faced.

This sudden loss was too much for him.
The workers finished,silence returning.
Looking at his broken face,I said softly,“Ethan,Margaret’s last wish was for us not to get divorce.”
“She wouldn’t want us to split up.”
He cleared his throat, voice hoarse after a long pause.“We’re getting divorced.End of discussion.”
His answer oddly freed me.
Maybe I was relieved to escape her dying wish.
Ethan glanced at me,flat.“I owe Emily justice.”
“I won’t spend the rest of my life with her killer.”
Back to square one.
I swallowed my frustration.“Ethan, how many times do I have to say it?I didn’t kill her. It’s all in your head!”
“Divorce?Fine.Tomorrow morning,courthouse.”
In five years of marriage,I had never lost my temper with him.
His work meant we rarely had time together.
Those rare moments were precious—I was always compliant.
I had given everything to this marriage, only to lose it all to his first love.
It was time to end it.
Ethan’s face darkened.He left without a word.
Back at the apartment,I packed.
Ethan bought this place outright—I’d have to move out post-divorce.
He sat on the couch, watching silently.
His eyes held a hint of resentment.
“Sarah,if you hadn’t killed Emily,I wouldn’t be this harsh.”
“She’s dead.Mom’s dead.Did you ever stop to think about how I feel?”
Pain?
I laughed bitterly.“How dare you ask for my sympathy?”
“Ethan,this is what you deserve!”
I dragged two suitcases to the door.
He grabbed one.“I have a surgery tomorrow.I don’t have time for a divorce.”
