Emily bombarded me with messages.
[You just sit at home, doing nothing,so of course you don’t understand how hard I work.I’ve hired someone close to help out.Stop being so jealous!]
[Do you have any idea how exhausting it is to run this company? I do it all for your reputation, so you can walk around town with your head held high.]
Her words cut deep, bringing back memories of the early days when we started the company.
I’d scoured for the perfect downtown location, with views of the city’s tallest skyscraper.
If she wanted it,I signed the contract without a second thought.
But now,it’s become her weapon to mock me. How ironic.
She didn’t know that I wasn’t just sitting around. I’m a professional stock trader, and my assets have multiplied several times over!
Without me,her company would’ve gone under a long time ago!
I parked at the hospital, tears streaming down my face.Today was supposed to be the day I told Emily we could finally have our baby.
But now…
Suddenly snapping back to reality, I noticed a men’s lighter in the passenger door handle.
I don’t smoke—it couldn’t possibly be mine.
I picked it up and,on a hunch, checked Liam’s social media. His latest post was a selfie with the same lighter, captioned:[She says only her favorite guy deserves this lighter.Love, never extinguished.]
My breath caught in my throat, and my hands shook as I opened the car’s glovebox. There was a luxury brand gift bag with a receipt—signed by Emily.
How did they manage this?
In less than a week, they’d hooked up?
I vaguely recalled my past life, when Liam framed me.Emily didn’t believe me then either. She said,“James, everyone makes mistakes.Just admit it,and I won’t blame you.”
“Don’t worry,it hasn’t spread.If I say drop it,no one will know,okay?”
Back then,I naively thought she was protecting me.
Now,I wondered—had they already been together in my past?
I took a deep breath, took a screenshot of Liam’s post, photographed the lighter and receipt, and sent them to every group chat with Emily and Liam.[Who left this lighter, only fit for Liam,in my car?]
Then I walked into the hospital.
The doctor greeted me warmly.“Mr.Miller,here with Mrs.Miller to discuss the embryo transfer?”
Suppressing my trembling voice,I said,“I’ve changed my mind.I don’t want this baby.”
After confirming multiple times, the doctor canceled the embryo transfer and, at my request, deleted all our IVF plans, eggs, and sperm,as if we’d never been there.
I couldn’t let our baby have such an irresponsible mother.
Checking my phone,I saw countless missed calls from Emily.Without a second thought, I blocked her number.
The group chats either dissolved or saw members scrambling to leave, looking utterly pathetic.
At home,Emily rushed to me,frantic.“Honey!Let me explain! There’s nothing between me and your cousin!I sent the lighter, yes, but it was for you.”
“That night my aunt threatened to post about you kicking them out,so I was nervous and apologized on your behalf.Understand?”
“For me?”I looked at her,my eyes devoid of any love.“I did nothing wrong, yet you apologized‘for me.’Laughable.”
I pulled the divorce agreement from my bag and tossed it at her.“Sign it.”
