Last year,my cousin Liam Carter was laid off in a major downsizing and set his sights on joining my wife’s company.
At a family gathering,he first tried to make me feel guilty with an air of self-importance.“Cousin,I heard your wife’s company is short a secretary, right?I’ll graciously solve that problem for you.”
“There’s no need for an interview. After all, I’m your cousin. As for the salary, I’m not being greedy—just $10,000 after taxes will suffice.”

Then he sneered at me, implying that I was cheating on my wife and had had plastic surgery.
In the past,I might’ve given in and agreed,or simply stood by as he slandered me.
But not this time—I’ve had a change of heart.
I looked at him and sneered.“We wouldn’t even consider hiring a secretary who didn’t graduate high school.”
“You want$10,000 after taxes?Sure, the barber shop downstairs might be a better fit for you.”
His words stunned Liam. His face flushed red,and he whined pitifully,“James,I was just trying to help since your wife’s company can’t find anyone. How could you say that?”

My aunt frowned, her tone full of reproach.“James,I was so good to you growing up,and this is how you repay me?You’re breaking my heart!”
I glared at Liam, seething with anger, wanting to tear him apart.
In the past, due to family ties,I’d agreed to let Liam become my wife’s secretary.
But he abused our relationship, causing chaos at the company—embezzling funds to buy luxury goods and committing commercial fraud using my name.

When it all came to light,I became the scapegoat and,in despair, ended my own life.
Coming back to the present,I kicked the stool in front of me and said bluntly,“With your qualifications, you’re not fit to be my wife’s secretary. You’d better head to a factory and start working.”
“James Miller!”Liam shot up,pointing at me and shouting,“I’m your cousin! How dare you not help me?”
I laughed, retorting,“Didn’t you say you were helping me?How’s it suddenly that I’m not helping you?”
Liam was speechless, stammering without a comeback.
Other relatives joined in,scolding me.“James, how could you talk like that?Liam’s always been a good kid in our town. This job’s perfect for him.”
“Yeah, are you jealous of how good-looking he is,worried he’ll overshadow you?”
“Liam’s reliable.I’ve watched him grow up.”
Their words sent a chill down my spine.
I asked myself, since I married Emily Watson and moved to the city years ago, hadn’t I been good to them?
Every holiday, for the sake of my late parents,I sent them generous cash gifts as a sign of respect.I even invited them to our home for meals.
So why?
I had no obligation to do this, yet they ganged up on Liam’s side,guilt-tripping me.
Was it because Liam’s grandfather was the town mayor? Were they just currying favor with his family?
I set down my fork,saying coldly,“Is that so?If he’s so great,why don’t you give him your jobs?”
Their faces darkened.
Just then,Emily came home from work.Liam, seizing the moment, showed off the designer watch on his wrist and sidled up to her.“Emily!Didn’t you promise me on the phone I could be your secretary? Why’s James saying no now?”
Emily glanced at me,confused, and after a pause, asked,“Honey, what’s going on?”
“I thought you were okay with it,since he’s your cousin…”
I cut her off firmly.“I’m not okay with it.”
Emily quickly pulled her hand away from Liam.“I always listen to my husband. If he says no,then it’s no.”
My aunt’s face turned livid, and she sneered,“Some CEO she is,still scared of her husband at home. What a shame—married to a useless man.”
Before Emily could respond,I shot back,“If your family’s so capable, then why aren’t you living better?”
“Oh,and isn’t Uncle a kept man?I heard he gambled and accumulated a large amount of debt.Now he’s vanished,right?”
My aunt, furious by belief, smashed her teacup on the floor with a loud crash.“James Miller!I only came to see you out of pity, since your parents died young. Do you think I wanted to be here?”
“If you hadn’t been fortunate enough to marry Emily, a rich heiress, you’d be worse off than Liam!”
Everyone nodded thoughtfully.“Yeah,he’s just a man who relies on his wife’s wealth and got cocky, forgetting gratitude and respect…”
“Won’t even help his own cousin—how outrageous!”
A man who relies on his wife’s wealth…Why did so many think Emily was some wealthy heiress?
Did they really not know that Emily’s success was because of me?
