AMELIA’S P.O.V

His words struck something inside of me.

Over the next few days, all I could do was thinking about his words. He told me that he would find a witch if that was what I truly wanted, but I could tell his heart wasn’t into it, and I was glad for that because I also needed time to think.

“I need to go to the office today,” Kaden began slowly as he stood in the doorway to the room.

I hadn’t brought myself to ask him to return to bed and he didn’t push. Every night, he slept outside the door, never once complaining or making me feel like I was being a bother to him. I wanted him back with me, I wanted this whole thing over and done with but I couldn’t do that, not until I found a solution. I didn’t want the same problems plaguing us over and over again.

“I’ll just stay here.”

“Do you want me to send for Clara to join you? I can have-”

“I just want to be here alone, I need to think.”

He pursed his lips, clearly not pleased with my choice but nodded. I watched him stand in the doorway for a few more seconds, as if debating whether or not to do something.

“Kaden-”

He made his way over to me and pressed a lingering kiss to my forehead. My eyes shut of their own accord, my heart fluttering in my chest as his scent enveloped me. For a long moment, neither of us moved, choosing instead to enjoy the beauty of this moment.

“I love you,” he whispered against my skin. “I’ll be back soon.”

He didn’t gave me a chance to return the words, probably because he was worried that I wouldn’t. I watched him disappear and only when he was gone did I allow myself to say it softly.

I did everything to keep my attention of my failing relationship. I cleaned, I baked and I rearranged my entire closet. By the time I was done, I was exhausted and it wasn’t even two p.m. yet. I was about to call it quits and go looking for Kaden when I heard a sound like the creak of a floorboard.

I stilled, every nerve in my body coming alive with worry as I looked around for the source of the noise. I was in the kitchen and I knew it was the best place I could be. I grabbed a knife, held it behind my back and waited.

My heart was pounding in my chest and my wolf stood on edge.

“Call Kaden,” she told me. “Let him come home.”

I tried to mind link my mate, but his wall was up. It was very unusual of him to have his wall up, he hadn’t done that since I returned. I tried Caleb next and got the same result so I shot them both a quick text on my phone, praying they would see it.

I waited another minute, and when I didn’t see anyone, I exhaled deeply, deciding that it was just my imagination. I turned back to my cookies on the counter when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye.

“Hello, Amelia.”

I jumped, my hand resting over my racing heart as I stared at Aiden.

He was in a button up shirt and slacks, his hands shoved into the pockets of his pants. He had an unnerving smile on his face as he watched me and I couldn’t help but wonder how he got into the house seeing as the front door was locked.

“What are you doing here?” I asked finally. “Kaden isn’t here.”

“I know, he’s handling something at the border. There was a little disturbance.”

The way he said the word had my hackles rising. I had always found Aiden a little weird but this was something else and my wolf was ringing all the alarm bells. Something was wrong.

“I think you should leave until he gets back.”

“Don’t you want to know why I’m here?” he stepped further into the kitchen.

I still had the knife behind my back, it was the only thing that gave me any form of comfort. I was armed and I wasn’t going to be a victim- not again.

“I want you to leave.”

He ignored me. “You were never supposed to be his mate. This would have been much easier if you weren’t because I like you, Amelia, and you have so much power locked up inside of you.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He snorted. “You’re a Vibrius wolf. I know all about you. But you don’t have to worry, I have no use for your power. It is Kaden I want, you are simply an inconvenience that will be handled soon. Blake has missed you.”

“Fuck you.”

I didn’t want to kill him, he was still Kaden’s cousin, so I ran- or tried to.

I had barely taken two steps when his hands wrapped around my hair and tugged me back hard. I fell on my ass, the knife clattering a few feet to my right.

“You just had to make this difficult, didn’t you?” I watched him pull out a syringe from his pocket. “I swear this won’t hurt you.”

He crouched down until he was at eye level with me and I slammed my head into his face hard. He cursed as blood splattered over his nose.

“You little-”

I grabbed the knife before I could rethink my decision and shoved it right into his chest. I heard the sound of flesh tearing and his mouth formed an ‘o’

“Amelia-”

I stabbed him again and again, ignoring the blood that splattered all over my skin. I let all the rage and frustration fill me. I knew there was a spy, I knew Blake had friends, but I never thought it would be him.

I stabbed him until he slumped forward and I stared at my blood stained hands and clothes, the reality of what I had done settling on me.

“No,” I whispered. “Fuck. No.”

I tried to reach Kaden again but to no avail. I grabbed my phone, dialing his number as many times as I could but it went straight to voice mail. It felt like I was in a daze and I couldn’t breathe. I stumbled blindly over to the stairs, hoping to clean some of the blood off me.

I was so wrapped up in my own worry that I didn’t even realize someone walking up to me until I felt something sharp at my back.

“You’re a mess, Amelia.”
