AMELIA’S P.O.V

Clara and I sat down on the wooden chairs while Aaron remained at the edge of the bed. He looked better than the last time I saw him, much better actually.

“You haven’t used your powers in a while,” he didn’t waste any time before going straight to the point. “Both of you, not just you, Amelia.”

I shrugged. “My wolf was drugged for weeks and I just haven’t had a reason to recently.”

“You will soon.”

It sounded more like an ominous warning than anything and I wanted to ask more about what he meant but he had already turned away from me and was facing Clara. She had her hands folded neatly in her laps and her face was cast down.

“I just didn’t want to,” she shrugged. It was clear she was very uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation.

She already told me why so she didn’t need to tell him, especially if she didn’t want to. Besides, I was concerned with how he knew that we hadn’t used our powers in a while. We didn’t talk about it outside his door so there was no way he could have heard us.

“You want to know how I know, don’t you?” he asked and my eyes darted up to me.

Subconsciously, my hands lifted to my lips wondering if I had spoken out loud. “Can you read my mind?”

“No, I can’t,” he laughed. “You wear your emotions on your sleeve, Amelia, it isn’t hard to guess your questions before you ask them.”

I hummed in disbelief. “How did you know about the powers?”

“I told you before, I can sense magic. Magic has a scent, a taste if you will and when magic is used consistently, the smell and the taste is different, almost stronger. As it is, it’s almost dull around you both, almost as if you’re trying to repress it.”

It was my turn to face the ground because he was right. I hadn’t said it to anyone before, I hadn’t even admitted it to myself but a part of me hated my powers. If not for them, I would have never been in this position. My father would never have gone looking for my mother, he would have never killed her and taken me from her.

I would have never met Blake and he would have never been obsessed with me. I would have met Kaden on our own terms and everything would have been fine. The entire reason my life was as terrible as it was right now was because of these powers.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied. “I’ll talk to Kaden about getting you out of this room. It isn’t fair that you’re still here.”

He laughed. “I don’t want to leave actually. I find that I have gotten used to the room. I’m allowed to leave, I’m not a prisoner.”

“You just chose not to leave?” I asked and he nodded. “Why?”

“Because of you, Amelia. I’m not going to let what happened to my sister happen to you, Amelia. I’m going to be here for you until the threats to your life are extinguished.”

“Blake doesn’t want my powers.”

“This isn’t about him. It’s about the man that killed my sister and everyone else who wants the powers of the Vibrius wolves. You aren’t safe until that man is dead.”

I just sighed and crossed my arms over my chest. My father was not a threat, at least not now. As long as Blake remained Alpha, there was nothing he could do but then again, I asked Kaden to kill Blake.

“I don’t want to talk about that right now,” was what I ended up saying.

“Then why are you here, Amelia? You came here for something.”

I hesitated because the truth was, I didn’t know. I said I wanted to finish the conversation we were having before I left but now that I was faced with the conversation, I wanted nothing to do with it. I didn’t want to use my powers unless they were absolutely necessary.

“You’re not ready yet,” Aaron gave me a small smile. I watched as he stood to his feet and stepped up in front of me.

Beside me, Clara stilled, almost as if she was preparing to throw herself in front of me if need be. There was no one who loved peace more than Clara and for the first time ever, I saw her tense up as if preparing for an attack.

I reached out to hold her hand, gently assuring her that I didn’t need protecting. I was safe, at least while I was with Aaron. Even if he wanted to, he wasn’t stupid enough to try and hurt me right here.

“Both of you aren’t ready,” he continued. “For your sakes, I hope you’re ready when the war comes.”

“What war?” it was Clara’s turn to ask but he was done speaking.

He turned his back to us and stared out the window. I knew nothing we would say would make him speak again so I just stood to my feet and dragged Clara along with me. We got to the door when I remembered something I wanted to ask.

“Do you know of people who have more than one mate at a time?”

He didn’t turn to me but I saw his spine straighten. “I have heard of it in passing, yes.”

“Do you know how someone can break a mating bond?” I asked and Aaron turned to me, his brow high with amusement and curiosity.

“Why would you want to know that?”

I shrugged. “It’s a simple question. You either know the answer or you don’t.”

He didn’t speak immediately and I thought he was going to ignore me so I turned to leave but my hand had just touched the door knob when I heard his voice again.

“It is rare for people to try to break their mating bonds but it is possible if you have a witch or priestess strong enough,” he started slowly. “I’ll assume your questions are intertwined so I will give you this warning. If even one thing goes wrong, you could end up breaking both bonds instead of just one.”

I didn’t miss the fact that he addressed his response to me so I crossed my arms over my chest and kept my expression carefully impassive.

“I wasn’t asking for myself.”

“Of course you weren’t,” he was clearly trying to hide a smile. “Until next time, Amelia.”
