AMELIA’S P.O.V

Darla was by my side in an instant helping me clean up but all I could think about was the fact that I could be pregnant with Kaden’s baby. The thought had me almost throwing up again but I managed to stop myself. I wasn’t sure she would appreciate me throwing up over the spot she had just struggled to clean.

It was cause for celebration of course but not when I was in the middle of nowhere trying to get away from Blake. How hadn’t I noticed? How hadn’t I known? It was a miracle that I was away because if Blake had found out then I couldn’t even begin to imagine what he would have done. I could have lost my child, I might have lost it.

“You’re panicked,” I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up at Darla. “I need you to breathe for me, no one is going to hurt you.”

Tears gathered in my eyes but I tried to do as she asked. Once I was a little more stable, I turned to the doctor. “I’m pregnant?”

“I can’t be sure until I take a blood test but I have seen enough pregnant women to know. Just let me do the test.”

“No,” I shook my head. “I’m sorry but I can’t let you do that. I need to leave.”

“Are you insane?” Darla asked. “You’re dehydrated, exhausted, you have blisters on your feet and you might be pregnant but all you can think about now is leaving? Who are you running from? Is it your mate? I can see the mark on your neck.”

My hand flew to it immediately. “No, I’m not running from him, I’m running to him.”

“What happened to you?”

“I was taken by someone who thinks we should be mated. He is probably looking for me and if he finds out that I’m pregnant then I don’t know what I’m going to do. I need to get home, I need to get back to my mate. My wolf isn’t strong enough to reach him over such a long distance but once I’m close enough-”

“Let us take you,” it was Jackson who spoke and I turned to him in surprise. “I don’t want you here and you don’t want to be here either. I can take you as close to your pack as possible and your mate can come for you. Tell me who your mate is and who you’re running from.”

I shook my head. “You won’t help me once you know.”

“I swear by the goddess. I want you out of my home. You smell like trouble and I would much rather not keep you here and risk bringing danger to everyone else.”

I swallowed and reached out to my wolf. She had been quiet since the whole interaction. I knew she trusted Darla but I didn’t know if she trusted her enough to tell them the truth.

“Should I?” I asked but she said nothing. “I need to know, Tara.”

“He is our best shot,” she said simply. “He is a man of honor. If he says he will get us home then he will, even if he doesn’t like it.”

That was more than enough confirmation for me. I broke off the communication and turned to Jackson who was still staring at me. They were all obviously waiting for a response.

“I was running from Blake, I suppose he’s Alpha now, he is the new Alpha of Alpha Gregory’s pack,” I managed out and Jackson’s eyes widened.

“I heard about that. Most people thought he didn’t deserve to be Alpha and he conned his way there.”

I shrugged. “He may have, but I don’t care.”

“Who is your mate, Amy?”

“My mate is Kaden, the Alpha of the Dark Fangs pack.”

His eyes widened comically and a gasp left Darla’s lips. Everything seemed to still, a reaction I knew was associated with Kaden’s name and reputation. They stared at me for a long minute as if trying to ascertain if I was joking or not but I kept my face perfectly impassive.

“You’re mated to him?” Darla asked, her tone unbelieving. “I didn’t know he had a mate. No one knows anything about what goes on in that pack. I heard he was a-”

She fell silent and cast a wary look in my direction but I wasn’t bothered.

“Everyone thinks he is a monster, I know that, I thought so too before I met him but as it stands, he isn’t the one who kidnapped me or kept me locked in a house in the woods. I don’t care if you help me or not but I need to go back to him.”

Jackson sighed. “I swore to you that I would help so I will. We aren’t too far from the Dark Fangs pack. If we run, we can make it in a little over a day.”

“I can try but I’m not sure how long my wolf can run. Blake kept me drugged. I might be able to make a day’s run or less but I won’t be able to mind link him to let him know that I’m close.”

“We could drive but it would take over two days. We would have to go through some human towns for gas and that would get us dangerously close to Blake’s pack.”

I thought about it for a moment. I didn’t want to risk Blake getting me, not when I was so close to freedom.

“We’ll run,” I decided finally. “Do you have a phone? I can call him when I’m close, or call someone.”

“I don’t but I can figure out something,” he gave me a sad smile. “I’ll get you home. We can leave at the crack of dawn, you need to rest.”

“But-”

“You need to rest and we need to find something to hide your scent because the last thing I want is to lead Blake and his men here.”

“Thank you for helping me. You didn’t have to.”

“I know, go to sleep, we have a long day ahead of us.”
