AMELIA’S P.O.V
It was always a pleasure to see how Clara’s powers with the birds worked. I watched her in complete and utter awe as she sat cross legged on the floor looking for any piece of information to tell us where Aaron was.
It didn’t take as long as I expected it to. One second, she was silent and the next, she was on her feet and giving me directions as I drove. I felt something akin to anticipation the closer we got to the pack house. Aaron was the closest link I had to my family and I wanted to know everything. I knew I could trust him, my wolf told me as much but there was still a little bit of apprehension, especially when I thought about the fact that I didn’t tell Kaden where I was going.
There was no doubt that he was going to be pissed but my curiosity was far greater than the prospect of upsetting him.
The guards were shocked to see us. They looked between Clara and I and I could tell they weren’t sure how to react. They were stationed in front of Aaron’s room.
“Are you going to stand there or are you going to let us in?” I asked and they swallowed. “Don’t look at me like you don’t understand what I’m saying.”
“The Alpha gave us clear orders to not let anyone in,” one of them managed out. “I know you’re the Alpha’s mate and she’s the Beta’s sister but-”
“But what?” I cut him off keeping my voice clear and sharp despite the raging storm inside of me. “Do you think Kaden would be happy to know that we were refused?”
I was playing a dangerous game. They could call Kaden here and my plan would be soiled. I raised a brow, keeping fierce eye contact when one of the guards bowed and stepped aside.
“My apologies,” he mumbled.
I said nothing, choosing instead to huff as I walked into the room. I waited until new had gotten in before I let out a sigh of relief. It was a miracle that he had chosen younger guards. An older and more experienced guard would have called me out on my bluff immediately.
“That was impressive,” I heard a voice drawl from the shadows and I looked up to find Aaron standing by the window. “You sounded every bit like a Luna out there. I am surprised they didn’t piss their pants.”
“You could hear us?” I asked and he nodded. “I came to speak to you.”
“You are here without your mate,” he noted and I hummed. His eyes fell on Clara. “You have magic in you, I can sense it. It is different from what I am used to. What do your powers do?”
“I’ll show you mine if you show me yours,” she teased and the corner of his lips tipped up.
“Unfortunately, my powers don’t work that way. I didn’t get the magnificent powers that the others did. I am what you would call a tracker. I can sense magic and I can find it from miles away. It is almost like a scent to me. It is in the wind. I can feel it thrumming through my blood. I can tell things about it.”
He seemed to have piqued Clara’s interest because she took a step closer. “What can you tell me about my magic?”
“It has something to do with nature. It smells like the earth to me. It reminds me of a warm day in the sun. You’re very in tune with your environment- I can say that much.”
Clara said nothing and for a second, I thought she would have called him a fraud, but she held out her hand and I watched as a little sparrow flew in from the open window and landed on her finger.
“He has been watching you all day,” she said simply. “This was how I found you. I can see through the eyes of the birds. They tell me things, they carry whispers to me.”
Aaron was impressed. “You will be a good ally to Amelia when she decides to take her rightful place on the-”
“Stop,” I cut him off and he turned to me with a frown.
“Isn’t that why you are here?” he asked looking confused. “I thought you had come to change your mind.”
“I came to find out more about my family, about my future and my destiny. I haven’t made a choice yet.”
He smiled sadly. “Life doesn’t wait for us to be ready, Amelia. You will make your choice or life will make it for you.”
“I’ll take my chances. Tell me something about them- my mother and others like her.”
“Others like you, you mean,” he corrected.
I said nothing in response to that.
He sighed and he told me. He weaved an elaborate story with his words that I couldn’t help but see everything he said. It was almost like I could see through his eyes. I could smell it on the wind and I could feel it deep in my chest. Every word filled me with a longing for a world that I didn’t even know. I never knew I could feel something like that but it was almost as if my wolf remembered it. It felt weird to remember something that you had never seen.
I had millions of questions on the tip of my lips when Clara stilled. I turned to her in panic but her eyes had turned pure white. I had never seen her like that before and for the full minute that she remained like that, fear gripped me. She snapped out of it after a while and inhaled sharply as if she had been starved of air.
“We need to leave,” she whispered harshly to me and she must have seen my confusion but she didn’t bother to explain. “Thank you for accommodating us, Aaron.”
“Clara, what is going on?” I asked but she just grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the room.
She didn’t even wait to thank the guards, she just pulled me towards the car and all but threw me into the passenger seat. She didn’t like large cars like mine but that didn’t seem to matter to her as she pulled out of the pack house.
“Clara, talk to me, you’re scaring me.”
She turned to me, her eyes filled with fear that mirrored mine. “Someone is coming.”
