AMELIA’S P.O.V

She led me into the living room and I could already tell by her demeanor that she had no intentions of answering whatever questions I had. She gestured to the empty seat and before I could speak, she walked out only to return with a tea cup and some slices of cake. I watched her pour it while taking in the room out of the corner of my eye.

It fit her personality perfectly. It was spotless with white couches and pure white walls. It looked more like an office than a home but I said nothing knowing that I risked causing an entire fight. I waited until she handed the cup to me and made a show of sipping my tea slowly.

“Is there something you need my help for?” she asked. “I have to say, I am shocked to see you here. I thought we had a mutual agreement where we didn’t like each other and preferred to stay away.”

“Why don’t we stop with the games?” the no nonsense tone I took had her stilling. “I have been patient with you and Kaden. I have sat while you both have hid things from me. I have not said a single word since. I have stuck by his side and I am not sure how long I can keep doing that if I don’t know what exactly I am dealing with.”

She frowned. “Are you threatening to leave my son? I’ve wanted you to do that for a while. What makes you think I would try to stop you?”

“I won’t leave him, but I won’t make things easy either. You want your son to be happy and you will do anything to make sure that happens even if it means making peace with me. You don’t like Nadine, the way I see it, I am the lesser evil. Tell me what the hell is going on.”

“It isn’t my story to tell.”

“Bullshit,” I cut her off and her eyes widened.

I had never spoken to her like this before and if I was being honest, I was terrified. She was not a woman to be messed with but I was tired and I was going to get answers one way or another. Kaden still hadn’t completely regained her memories so she was the only one who could give me the answers that I needed and we both knew it.

“Listen to me, you know what happened. You are the only one who does. I am not playing games anymore. I have done my time, I have been the perfect mate and I am not doing that anymore. If you want me to keep him away from Nadine then you better give me a fucking good reason as to why.”

She crossed her arms across her chest in shock and amusement at my outburst. I took it as a good sign that she didn’t snap back at me and instead chose to lean back in her chair and watch me. I never cursed and yet I just did to get a point across and I was worried it was in vain when she remained silent for a full minute.

I started to think that she was not going to respond and I started to rise when I finally heard her speak.

“Kaden and I used to go on annual holidays,” she began slowly. “It started after his father died. He was all I had left and I wanted to make sure that he didn’t forget that I loved him. On his eighteenth birthday, we went to a neutral town. There was this dumb ass fair that happening and he wanted to be there. That night, he came back and told me about this girl that he met.”

She rolled her eyes on that last part.

“Was that Nadine?”

She shot me a scathing look. “If you want me to tell this story then do not fucking interrupt me,” she spat and I raised both hands in mock surrender. She cleared her throat and continued. “She was a rogue and I didn’t like her from the beginning because there was just something about her, you know? She was loud and opinionated, she was always doing dangerous stuff and she would ask Kaden to join her. I tried to tell him no but he was a man in love.”

“One day, he snuck out while I was asleep. I went looking for him and I found them at the edge of a cliff. She was playing a dangerous game where she would pretend to fall and ask him to grab her. He told her that he didn’t want to play but she wouldn’t listen. She slipped on a rock and she fell. He couldn’t get her in time. I can still hear the sound of her bones hitting the ground.”

I flinched at her words. It sounded absolutely terrifying but she didn’t even seem fazed. She lifted her cup of tea to her lips and took a sip.

“Kaden lost his damned mind on that cliff and that was when I knew that she was his mate. He had somehow fallen in love with that rogue girl within days. Meeting your mate brings you nothing but pain and I never wanted that for my son. I never wanted him to go through what I went through,” for the first time, I saw what looked like raw hurt in her eyes. “I took him home, I had knock him out to do so and I asked Dr. Brown to get rid of his memory. When he woke up, he was better and he was happy and I will never regret making that decision.”

“Okay,” I whispered and her brows furrowed. “You made what you thought was the right choice for your son and no one can fault you for it then but what I will fault you for right now is that you didn’t tell anyone else. Nadine is here. You said you saw her die. You knew this story and you didn’t say a word.”

She scoffed. “I have been trying to reconcile the image of the dead girl at the bottom of the cliff to this girl right here in my pack hospital. She shouldn’t be alive so forgive me if my first thought was not to go spilling tea and braiding your hair.”

Her words were like a slap in the face. She placed her mug harshly on the table and stood to her feet. Her hands immediately went to her hair and she made a show of straightening her hair and smoothing out her clothes.

“I have told you everything that I know, Amelia. There is nothing I can do in regards to Kaden. He doesn’t listen to me anymore. You have to make sure that he doesn’t remember who she is and you need to make sure you figure out what the hell she wants. That girl is bad for my son.”

With one final look in my direction, she turned on her heels and walked out. I didn’t need her to tell me that was a dismissal. She wasn’t going to return. I cleared my throat and saw myself out while trying to come to terms with what she had told me. Nadine had somehow come back from the dead and Kaden was going towards another downward spiral. I was pissed at him but I couldn’t let that happen so I made my way to the hospital.

As I walked in through the doors, I came to the conclusion that I hated the smell of hospitals. The antiseptic was too strong and it just smelled like sickness and death. I tried to put on a brave face as I nodded towards the nurses. I could see the pity in their eyes as I walked past them. It was a never ending cycle and I was tired of it but I needed to do what I had to in order to save my mate from himself.

Nadine had been moved to another room. It was the one kept aside for members of the Alpha’s family. I tried not to feel insulted by that especially when I walked in and saw Kaden seated by her side. Her hand was in his and he was softly stroking the back of her palm.

“Some would constitute this as an affair,” I began and he turned to me sharply. It was almost comical that on a normal day, he would have noticed me but he was so focused on her that he didn’t. “You spend all your time with her and you’re touching her.”

He muttered a small curse under his breath before making his way over to me. He grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the room until we were standing off to a corner of the hallway. He looked like hell but he still looked handsome. I wanted to run my hand through his hair but I had to control myself.

“Please don’t start anything here,” he began, his voice laced with exhaustion. “I just want to make sure that she is well-”

“I didn’t come here to talk about her. I came here to talk about us, Kaden. We have been having this conversation over and over again for the past few weeks and I am tired of it. Why are you choosing her again and again?”

“I am not choosing her. It is my job to make sure that everyone has a fair chance. My mother has something against her and I will not put it past her to try something insane.”

“Okay, are we going to talk about what happened?”

He ran his hands down his face in frustration. He opened his mouth to speak but was saved by someone clearing their throat down the hall. It was a male nurse and he shot me a sympathetic look before turning to Kaden.

“There are some improvements to her and I think you would want to see it.”

He walked away and Kaden turned to me. “I’m sorry, Amelia, we can talk about this later but right now, I need to be there. You have to understand.”

He placed a kiss on my forehead before walking away and I just stood there like an idiot staring at him. I willed the words out of my mouth but nothing would come. After a full minute, I scoffed and turned on my heels. So much for trying to get him to listen. Kaden was too focused on her, I was now an afterthought and there was nothing I could do to make that happen.

To add insult to injury, when I walked out, it was raining. The droplets splattered on the ground and I nearly screamed. Getting wet was not on my list of things to do.

After muttering a curse, I decided to sprint for the lot. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going because I bumped into someone. I would’ve fallen on my ass had they not grabbed me by the waist.

“We need to stop meeting like this,” Ian mused and I couldn’t help my smile. “Are you alright? You don’t look so good. Do you need me to take you home?”

I shook my head and was about to leave but decided against it at the last minute. “Are you doing anything right now?”
