AMELIA’S P.O.V
I recognized the woman instantly. Her sharp eyes were not something I could ever forget. She was also one of the first people in this pack to be nice to me. She looked good for her age and she smiled softly when she realized that I had recognized her. The main reason I couldn’t forget her was because she said she knew my mother. I had planned to go back and ask her about it someday but life got the better of me.
“I didn’t think I would ever see you here, Amelia,” she smiled then gestured for me to walk with her. “It has been a while since we last saw you and a lot has changed, you are with the Alpha now.”
“He’s my mate,” I didn’t know why I was explaining myself to her but I knew I could trust her. My wolf assured me that she was kind so I followed her.
She hummed. “So I heard, how does it feel being mated to an Alpha? I assume it isn’t as easy as one would think.”
“It’s not,” I laughed softly. “But it’s Kaden and he is worth it, I guess. Where have you been since we last met? I wanted to come and see you but I couldn’t because-”
“You wouldn’t have found me,” she cut me off and I raised a brow unsure of what she was implying. Was she out of town or sick? Did something happen to her that I wasn’t aware of. “I am fine, don’t worry. What I meant was that I don’t work there.”
“But you did my registration for school. How did you get access to that?”
She stopped in her tracks and laughed. “You don’t want to know how many strings the Alpha pulled to make sure that you had the best welcome into the pack.Imagine my shock when he asked me to work in the school for a day just so I could ensure that you got an appropriate welcome.”
I couldn’t believe that. Those words had me rethinking everything that had happened since the first time I set foot in the pack. I knew he wouldn’t have arranged those patrol boys but was everyting else orchestrated by him? It was both terrifying and endearing that he would have gone to such lengths even while I was scared of him and didn’t know who he was to me.
“Don’t overthink it dear,” she whispered. “Sometimes, you are better off not knowing.”
I couldn’t help but feel like she was talking about something else. “If you don’t work at the school, where do you work?”
“I am an elder,” my eyes widened and I immediately tried to bow but she reached out so stop me. “Please, there is no need. The way I see it, you will be Luna soon, I will be bowing to you,” my cheeks heated. “What is our future Luna looking for in the forbidden section of the library?”
“I was,” I trailed off not knowing if I should tell her the truth or not. At the end, I settled for a vague answer. “I was just looking around.”
“Of course,” it was clear thatshe didn’t believe me. “Do not let me get in your way. Havea good day, Amelia, I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Also, you might want to be more careful about the company you keep.Aiden is dangerous.”
She didn’t wait for me to respond before she started walking away and for a second, I just stood there watching her until I realized that I wanted to talk to her about something. I ran to catch up to her. “Wait, please!”
She was already going up a flight of stairs before I called out but she stopped and turned to answer me. “Did you need something?”
“Whenwe met, you said that you knew my mother,” I began and she smiled softly. “Can you tell me about her? I never got to meet her and my father never talks about her. If you could just tell me something, perhaps who she was and how you met, I would love that.”
She thought about it for a second before gesturing for me to come with her. She led me up the stairs and towards a small room. It had a small coffee table with a couch and a few books but that was it. On the coffee table weas biscuits and a tea pot. She gestured for me to take a seat and handed me a biscuit. I wanted to refuse but I figured it would be rude considering the fact that she was entertaining me when she didn’t need to.
“Your mother was an amazing person,” she began. “She was the kind of person that you metand couldn’t help but admire. She was fierce and smart and she had a heart of gold. I remember how she used to tutor the students who came from low-income backgrounds for free. She was also a fierce warrior. She could pin the average man to a mat in under five minutes.”
I would have never imagined that. I couldn’t help but smile at the knowledge that my mother was a force to be reckoned with. I felt a pang in my heart. Growing up, I never had the chance to miss her since I never knew her and father wouldn’t speak about her but hearing this now, it had me missing the life I could have lived if she didn’t die.
“She was also one of the most beautiful people I had ever laid my eyes on. That was one of the reasons I recognized you, she looked just like you,” she whispered and I couldn’t help but tear up. “She was taller though but you are her copy. I am sure she would be very proud if she could see you now.”
I wiped at my eyes. “Thank you. Did you meet her here?”
She just shrugged but didn’t answer the question as she stuffed a biscuit in her mouth. I figured she was allowed to hold some secrets so I let it slide.
“Youdon’t know how much this means to me,” I whispered. “I always tried to tell myself that I would have gotten along with her better. I did everything I could to find out about her but it was like father wiped away every trace of her from the pack.”
“Your mother would have adored you.”
“I hope so, it would have been nice to have one parent who loved me.”
Her brows furrowed. “What do you mean?” I realized I said the words out loud and waved her off but she wasn’t having it. “Tell me, Amelia. What happened?”
“It’s nothing,” I said in an attempt to make it sound less sad than it was. “It’s just that my dad always loved Brittany more. It was like she was the only one who mattered.”
“Who is Brittany?”
“My twin sister. Why?”
“Well, the thing is, as far as I know, your mother had only one child. You don’t have a twin sister, Amelia.”
I pushed to my feet. “You’re wrong. Maybe she didn’t tell anyone? Maybe it got lost in translation or something.”
She shook her head. “I am very sure of what I am saying, Amelia. Your mother was expecting only one child. You don’t have a twin. Your father is lying to you.”
“No,” I ran my hand through my hair. “Whywould he do that?”
“I don’t know but I don’t want you thinking about it too much,” I stayed quietand she grabbed my upper arms. “It isn’t worth it, Amelia, you are away from there and that is all that matters, promise me.”
Despite knowing I was lying through my teeth, I nodded. “I promise.” I smoothed down my dress. “I think that’s enough knowledge for one day. I should be going.”
She didn’t try to stop me, she just watched as I walked away. It was upon reaching the door of the library that I realized that I never asked her name.
I drove home in a daze and when I saw Kaden’s car in the driveway, I let out a sigh of relief. I couldn’t wait to tell him everything I found out. If anyone could get information about my mother and Brittany then he could. I rushed out of the car and into the house yelling his name but I was met with silence.
“Kaden, where are you?” I called out but there was still no response. “Are you here?”I heard a muffled sound from upstairs so I rushed up. I could hear him mumbling to himself in the room so I flung open the door. “You wouldn’t believe what-”
I stopped short when I took him in front of the mirror. He was standingwith his back to me and there was a massive wound on his shoulder that he was trying to reach but failing. His white shirt was getting soaked with blood and I rushed over to him.
“What happened?” he finally saw me and tried to hide the wound but I had already seen it. “How did this happen?”
“A fucking rogue got me with a knife dipped in wolf’s bane,” he mumbled. “I already got the antidote from the doctors but it might take a while to kick in. Meanwhile, I can’t reach the fucking-”
“Relax,” I cut him off as I took the cottonwool from his hands and led him towards the bathroom because he was going to drip blood everywhere.
I took a wash cloth and cleaned up the excess blood before taking rubbing alcohol and using it to dab at the wounds. He hissed slightly but otherwise remain still while I worked on his injury.
“Why didn’t you just have them stitch it up at the hospital?” I asked and he frowned at me through the sink mirror.
“It’s going to heal by tomorrow morning. The only reason it hasn’t yet is because of the stupid wolf’s bane,” he let out a sigh. “Enough about me, I heard you calling my name when you came in. Whatdid you want to tell me?”
“It doesn’t matter,” I began but Kadenturned around sharply and levelled me with a hard look.
“That wasn’t my question, what happened?”I told him about the elder I met and what I learned about my mother. He listened intently and didn’t speak until I was done. “How do you feel about it?”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I just can’t help but wonder why he would lie about us having then same mother.
“Maybe he cheated and he didn’t want anyone finding out.”
“You’re right, that has to be it,” I finished wrapping up the wound but when I looked at him, there was a look in his eye that ledme to realize he wasn’t telling me everything. “Whatis it, Kaden? What are you hiding?”
“Blake is going to attack your father and take the throne for himself. I don’t know when but I know it will happen. Our spies inside the pack have been relaying everything to us.”
My brows scrunched in confusion. “Why would he do that? I thought he didn’t want power. Besides, once father passes it over to Brittany, he will automatically become Alpha so what is the rush?”
“Isn’t it obvious?’ Kadenasked and I shook my head. I couldn’t see a valid reason why Blake was doing all of this. Kaden sighed. “He is doing it for you.”
“Me? Why would he be doing it for me?”
“Hewants you, Amelia and I believe once he takes over, he will come for you.”
