AMELIA’S P.O.V
As soon as Kaden left the house, I jumped out of bed and got dressed. I was eager to get to the library because I held onto the hope that it would have all the answers I was looking for. A part of me couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if I didn’t happen to find what I wanted but I tried to shut it out. There was no use being negative and potentially ruining my entire day.
My phone rang just as I got out of the bathroom and I picked it up without looking at the caller ID. “Did you get it?”
I knew immediately that it was Clara and I nodded momentarily forgetting that she couldn’t see me. “Yeah, I did. I’m getting ready to leave right now.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” she asked. “It might be more helpful if you have two hands on deck instead of one.”
“No thanks,” I would have loved her help but this was something I needed to do alone. Besides, I wasn’t sure how the library worked and I didn’t doubt that there would be guards there. I didn’t want Kaden asking questions if he found out that Clara was there with me.
“Good luck, I really hope you find what you’re looking for.”
“So do I.”
I hung up soon after and made my way to Kaden’s study to search for the pass. I had never been in his study before now, I didn’t even know he had one. The room was large and spacious but also very minimalistic. It resembled his office with a hand-crafted table and a leather chair, bookshelves and a comfortable looking couch. The table was covered with paper and files and the windows were wide open. The first thing I did was close the windows before searching for the pass.
I didn’t know what I was looking for but I had a feeling I would know when I saw it. I rummaged through the entire drawer but I saw nothing that resembled a pass. There were a bunch of files but no pass. I began to wonder if Kaden had made a mistake and I almost mind linked him but I didn’t want to make him suspicious.
I almost gave up when I accidentally knocked over a file. The papers spilled out on the floor and while I tried to gather it up, I noticed something sticking out of it. It looked like a credit card but on closer inspection, I realized it was the very thing I was looking for. It had the word library printed in tiny font on one corner but otherwise, it was plain brown and very dull.
I stuck it into my pocket immediately and rushed out of the housde. Clara had texted me the address so I inserted it into the GPS and started driving.
The library was a far way off from town. It was situated in the same neighborhood as the office I went to when I firstarrived in the pack to register myself. In fact, it was a few blocks from it. I parked in front of the building and tried to ignore the eyes of the guards. I didn’t know where the forbidden section was but I figured it wouldn’t be so hard. I spent almost fifteen minutes walking around aimlessly before I finally found it.
It was located on the top floor behind a pillar. Just as I expected, there were guards waiting there and they narrowed their eyes at me. I lifted the card and they looked between themselves in confusion.
“How did you get this?” one of them asked in an accusing tone.
“Kaden gave it to me.”
He looked like he was about to have an aneurysm. “Did you refer to the Alpha by his name?” he sounded furious and I couldn’t understand why. I always referred to him as Kaden and he didn’t seem to mind. “You insolent little brat. How dare you?”
“Excuse me,” I was taken aback by his words. I looked between the two guards and while the first one seemed furious, the other was staring at me as if he knew me and was trying to remember where he saw me.
“Yu will address the Alpha with-”
Before he could say anything else, the other guy whispered something in his ears and his eyes widened. He glanced at me but this time, he seemed a lot more respectful. He swallowed and handed me back the card.
“I didn’t realize you were the Alpha’s girl,” he bowed. “My apologies.”
It was a sharp contrast from how he had treated me before and I couldn’t help the indignationthat rose up in me. I glued my mouth shut and brushed past both of them without another word. The last time anyone spoke to me like that, I was at home and I didn’t realize how much I hated it until I got a glimpse of what it was like to be treated like a person.
I forced the bad experience out of my head as I concentrated on the task in front of me. The forbidden section was large with books lining very inch of the wall. It was also a little chilly. There were no librarians around and I realized that if I wanted to findanything, I was going to have to do it myself. I muttered a small curse under my breath and got to work.
BLAKE’S P.O.V
Brittany had become more useful than I predicted. Ever since she told me about Amelia not being Gregory’s daughter, she had been more forthcoming with information. It was almost as if giving away that had broken something inside of her. She barely tried to fight me anymore. Inow understood why Gregory chose me, there was something enticing about having someone you could control. If I told her to jump, she asked how high. It was fun.
I moved her things into my room because I didn’t want to give her the chance to run away or tell anyone about what was happening. She barely left the solace of the room and I could tell that Gregory was worried because he had asked me again if I knew what was wrong with her.
“Where are you going?” she asked snapping me out of my thoughts. She rarely spoke to me so I was shocked that she had initiated conversation.
“Does it matter?” I snapped back and she immediately fell silent. “If anyone asks, then I went to get some things for you because you haven’t been feeling well.”
“No one will believe that. You’ve been leaving the house too often.”
I crossed the length of the room and leaned over her. She was sitting on the bed so I easily towered over her and I saw her retreat into herself.
“If you repeat a word of that to anyone, you will regret it, am I clear?”she nodded and I lightly tapped her cheek. “Good girl, now lock the door and don’t say a word to anyone.”
I was almost out of the room when I heard her speak. Her voice was soft and I wouldn’t have heard her if not for how quiet the room was. “You remind me of someone.”
I wanted to ignore her but something told me to indulge. I turned and crossed my arms over my chest. “Who might thatbe?”
“My father.”
Those two words grated on my nerves and I snarled at her. “I am nothing like your father and if you say that again, it will be the last thing you ever do.”
I slammed the door shut.
I left immediately after that and made my way back to the house. Gregory was arriving just as I was leaving the palace and I saw him narrow his eyes at me. I knew he didn’t trust me and I didn’t care. I loved seeing the expression on his face as he passed by. It was almost as if he knew something was wrong but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
“Going somewhere?” he asked stopping directly in front of me.
“I’m going to get some things for Brittany, she wasn’t feeling well.”
It was like he forgot his disdain for me and was immediately filled with worry for his daughter. “I will go and see her.”
“No,” he raised a brow at me. “She is asleep, perhaps later, I will let you know when she waked up.” He narrowed his eyes at me and I knew he wanted to ask more questions but I quickly glanced at my watch. “I should be going.”
I walked away before he could say anything else.
It took me longer than I needed to in order to meet the others because I had to take detour in case Gregory had his men follow me. By the time I got to the hideout, Jamal was pacing and he looked annoyed.
“Blake, where have you been?” there was frustration laced in his tone. “You just cut her meeting time in half.”
“I had to take a few detours, Gregory met me while I was trying to leave.”
I looked around at the new people there.
Jamal had told me he was bringing in three guards from the palace so I could know some of the people on my side. I was shocked to see Frederick’s personal guard. The man had so many enemies under his nose, it was a shock that someone hadn’t tried to overthrow him yet.
“Take a seat,” he gestured to the only other available seat. “We need to start before anyone notices that they are gone.”
I nodded.
“When we attack, we have to be sure that we can win,” Jamal continued. “We need to make sure that Frederick is isolated. In terms of brute strength, he has the numbers but if we can kill him, then we can take the castle.”
“Leave that to me,” his guard said- I didn’t know his name. “I can get him alone. Who will strike the killing blow? If I do it, I will be hanged because of my oath as a guard.”
“I will,” I didn’t hesitate and Jamal smirked.
“I will make sure that everything is settled. When we are ready, I will come to you,” the guards disappeared leaving me and Jamal alone. “Soon, we will have everything we have worked for but there is something left to be worried about. What of Brittany? What will you do with her after everything? Will she die too?”
I thought about if for a second before shaking my head. “She cannot, I am mated to her and she carries my mark. If she dies then my wolf will lose his mind.”
“What will happen to her then? She will not agree to be with the man who murdered her father.”
“Leave Brittany to me, I have something special planned for her, don’t worry.”
