AMELIA’S P.O.V

Sometimes I wondered how I got lucky with someone like Kaden. He was patient with me even when I couldn’t speak at all and just offered his silent solidarity. When I woke up the next morning, it was to breakfast in bed and a soft kiss on my lips. I was so overwhelmed that I didn’t realize when I blurted out thatI wanted to move in with him. He was taken back and asked me twice if I was sure that was what I wanted and I nodded.

I wanted to be with Kaden, there was no need to delay the inevitable. I loved being around him and I loved falling asleep and waking up in his arms. As soon as I assured him that it was my decision, he immediately called for a moving van and we were on our way to Clara’s house. I was a bit anxious about talking to Pamela and Devin because they had made themselves like my parents and it felt weird moving out.

It was Pamela who opened the door and as soon as she saw me, she pulled me into her arms for a warm hug. I almost broke down in tears at that moment as she wrapped her arms around me. It was the kind of embrace I had lacked all my life, a concerned hug from a maternal figure. Kaden walked into the house to give us a semblance of privacy.

“Are you good?” she asked as she pulled away and I nodded. “Good, now you can come in so we can help you pack.”I took a step back and she laughed. “I knew it was only a matter of time, darling. Besides, Kaden told me he was going to ask you. When I heard what happened yesterday, I knew there was no way you wouldn’t move in with him.”

“You don’t mind,” my voice was soft for fear that she would be upset but she shook her head.

“You are like my grandchild, Ameliaand of course I would love to have you here but he is your mate and I know he makes you happy. The day any of my grandchildren find their mates and move out, I will be just as happy as I am now.”

“Thank you,” I whisperedasI blinked back tears and she squeezed my hand in response.

Packing was a bittersweet experience. Kaden was by my side the entire time and everyone helped out- even Caleb. It took a lot less time than it should have and within a few hours, everything was stocked into the back of the moving truck. Teary hugs were exchanged between Clara and I and she promised to come visit me at the office or Kaden’s house. Devin ho was trhe least emotional person amongst all of us actually teared up a little and Pamela finally allowed us leave after making sure to give me more tins of homemade food than I needed.

They assured me that their doors were always open and I thanked them before making my way into his car. I glanced over at mine which was seated in the driveway and Kaden followed my line of sight.

“I will have it brought homefor you.”

I couldn’t help but smile at his choice of words. The truth was his home was now my home and the thought of it was exciting. I couldn’t hold back my squeal. I couldn’t wait to unpack and see my things scattered all over his space. It was a little daunting as well because it meant that we were officially together. I didn’t know what that meant for us but I was willing to see it through.

We spent the rest of the night unpacking my things and by the time we were done, it was already night and I was exhausted. Kaden ordered in pizza for us and we sat by his fireplace and watched a movie. It felt surreal to know that I wasn’t leaving and I had to pinch myself every few seconds to make sure it was real.

I fell asleep during the movie and by the time I woke up, Kaden was alreadygetting dressed. He noticed me rousing from the bed and leaned over to place a swift kiss on my forehead. I glanced at the clock and saw that it was nine a.m.At first,I panicked because I thought I was late for work then I remembered that it was a Sunday and I turned to him with raised brows.

“I thought there was no work on Sundays.”

“There isn’t,” he confirmed my suspicions.

“Is there an event that I don’t know of?Why are you going out on a Sunday?”

“There was a break in our search for the rogues. I have to check it out with Caleb today,” I opened my mouth to protest but he cut me off. “They attacked you and I will never forgive that. I will not rest until I have dealt with them all. You cannot change my mind on that.”

I realized he was right so I sighed. “Just come back early, okay?”

He nodded and he was about to leave when he froze by the door and turned to me. From the look on his face, I had a feeling that I wasn’t going to like what he had to say. I squared my shoulders and sat up straighter in an attempt to brace myself for the news but it didn’t matter because his next words shook me.

“My mother usually has dinner with me on Sundays,” he explained. “If you are uncomfortable with it then I can askher to reschedule for today.”

I thought about it for a second. Kaden’s mother already didn’t like me and if I made her cancel her dinner plans with her son then she was going to hate me. I wanted to make a good impression on her and this wasnot the right way. I forced a smile on my face.

“It’s fine,” I assured him but he didn’t look convinced. “I’ll cook for dinner, you can tell her to come over.”

“I don’t mind canceling,” he began but I cut him off.

“It is going to be fun.”

He still looked skeptical but he nodded and reached into his pocket then handed me a black card. “I might not have everything you need in my kitchen so feel free to get whatever you want. She also likes it when we dress classy for dinner so if youdon’t have a dinner gown then get something nice.”

I glanced at the card then back at him. “I don’t want to spend too much.”

“I have more money than I need, sweetheart. I don’t think you can put a dent in my wallet but I would love to see you try.”

He left soon after and I just sat there in shock. The first thing I did was take a bath and scour the kitchen cabinets. He was not joking when he said he wouldn’t have everything. His cabinets were practically empty and I wondered how he cooked daily. Thankfully, my car had been delivered so I made my way to the store to restock his kitchen.

I felt guilty with how much I was spending but I reminded myself that it was for his kitchen and not for me to waste. By the time I got back home, it was late afternoon and I immediately started cooking. I wanted to make a good impression so I made a bunch of dishes that father taught me for his special meetings.

I did beef steak wellington with chicken and roasted red pepper roll ups then I made a risotto and for desert, I did a cheesecake. I was so proud of myself by the time I was done. I made sure to set up the table extra fancy then disappeared into the room to pick out a dress. I remembered seeing a fancy black dress a few weeks ago that I never thought I would wear.

By the time I freshened up and pulled it on, I was in shock. It fit me like second skin and flowed to the ground. It had a v shaped neckline that showed off a generous amount of cleavage. It was classy but also sexy. I had just finished putting on my heels when I heard the doorbell ring. I rushed over to open it thinking it was Kaden but I came face to face with his mother.

She was wearing a blood red dinner dress that was a lot more conservative than what I wore with long sleeves and a more loose skirt. She had a fur coat over her shoulders and her makeup was done expertly and her hair was in a tight chignon. Her eyes pierced into my soul and it made me squirm.

“Hi,” I said almot too cheerfully before clearing my throat. “My apologies, good evening.”

She just stared at me blankly. “Are we going to stand here all day or are you goint to let me in?”

I flushed pink and stepped aside. She shrugged off her coat before practically dumping it in my arms and walking away. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding and muttered a silent prayer for Kaden to come back soon because I knew that dinner was going to be an awkward affair.

I met her in the dining room standing by the table and taking in the setting. I had googled dinner table arrangements and followed it to a letter. I searched her face for any sign that she was impressed but she was carefully stoic and unresponsive.

“Was it you who did this?” she asked and I nodded. She hummed under her breath and I watched as she switched the positions of the glasses and the cutlery. “I didn’t realize setting a dinner table was such difficult work.”

I swallowed downmy embarrassment. “I’ve never done it before and Kaden wasn’t here.”

“I’m sorry my son was too busy protecting the pack to help you with something as trivial as a dinner table,” I was shocked by her harshness. “Listen here, this is usually a mother and son thing. I don’t know whyhe insists on having you here and maybe he convinced you that it was because I wanted to give you a chance but the thing is that I don’t like you. I don’t think you are a good fit for my son and he may not see that right now but he will.”

“Excuse me?” I asked but she ignored me and took a seat.

Before I could say anything else, the front door opened and I smelled Kaden.

“I’m sorry I’m late, I hope you didn’t start without me.”
