AMELIA’S P.O.V
Anger burned through me the entire way home and it wasn’t until I got to bed that it was more disappointment than anger. I had hoped we had gotten past Blake but it seemed like it bothered Kaden more than he cared to admit. I understood that Blake was a major part of my life but I couldn’t believe that he thought I would still want him after everything thathad happened between us.
I still cared for Blake, it was obvious considering what we had been through but it was not in the same way that I did for Kaden. What I felt for Kaden could not be explained into words. It was mind blowing and all consuming. The only reason I stayed quiet when he mentioned Blake was because a part of me was relieved and I was thinking about the bond between us and whether it would be broken since he had mated with Brittany. I was having a silent conversation with my wolf but he took it as something else.
I couldn’t stand to be around anyone because I knew my mood was volatile so I spent the day locked inside. Clara tried to get me out but I told her to leave me alone and she didn’t try again. I just sat cross legged on the bed and stared out of the window thinking of how I could assure Kaden that I wasn’t interested inBlake because it was clear that wordswere not going to cut it.
I was so lost in my thoughts that when someone knocked on my door, I jumped. I knew it had to be Clara. “I don’t want any company Clara, I’m fine.”
Despite my yelling, my door creaked open and I fell silent when I realized who was on the other end. I sat up straighter as Kaden made his way into the room. He shut the door behind him and made his way over to the edge of the bed. I watched him in apprehension wondering if he was going to yell at me like he did earlier.
“I’m not Clara,” his voice was soft as he spoke. “Is it okay if I sit down?” my mouth couldn’t work so I nodded and he hesitantly sat down. “I just want to talk so you can let your guard down.”
“Can I?” I couldn’t keep the bite out of my voice and I saw him flinch as if I had hit him.
“I deserved that, I guess,” he mumbled as he ran his hand down his face. “I should have never spoken to you like that, I realize that. I was jealous and I lost my cool. It was unfair to break the news to you like that.”
“I’m not upset that you told me, I am upset that you don’t seem to trust me. If you’re jealous about anything then you should talk to me.”
He reached out for me and I allowed him. He pulled me close until our knees were touching and he intertwined our fingers. “You’re right and I cannot promise to always do it but I can swear to try. Is that okay?”
“That is all I wanted.”
He let out a sigh of relief when he realized I wasn’t upset. Brittany would have said thatI let him off the hook too easy but he didn’t deserve to be punished for his actions especially when he regretted them and came all the way to apologize.
“I should go,” he began but I could tell that was the last thing he wanted. I also wanted him around so I could remind myself that he wasn’t angry anymore.
“You could stay,” I offered and I saw him about to refuse so I cut him off. “Please, after today, I just want you next to me.”
“Okay.”
I wokeup to an empty bed and I felt a pang of hurt in my chest. I glanced at the time and cursed when I realized I had slept through my alarm and missed training. I rushed into the bathroom to take a shower and was struggling to get dressed when Kaden walked into the room holding a tray of food. I froze and just stared at him wondering if it was a figment of my imagination. It wasn’t until he walked over to me and placed a kiss on my forehead that I realized he was real.
“I thought youhad left,” I managed out still watching him in my underwear. He just hummed and tapped the empty spot on the bed next to him. “Did you turn off my alarm?”
He nodded. “I told the instructor that you wouldn’t be in today. I wanted you to sleep through classes today but I guess that is out of the question.”
“Are you alright?” I couldn’t help but askand she sighed.
“I’m just trying to make up for yesterday,” he looked sheepish and I couldn’t help but smile. If anyone had told me that the feared Alpha Kaden would be mumbling to his shoes as he spoke to me, I would have called them liars. “I have to leave in a few minutes but I wanted to see you first. I’ll come pick you up from school after, okay?”
I nodded. “Can we at least eat breakfasttogether first?”
Kaden left shortly after we finished eating meanwhile,I was on cloud nine. When I left the room finally, Clara was giving me a teasing smile.
“I see you’re in a better mood today,” she mused and my cheeks heated.
“I’m sorry for yesterday, I was just emotional.”
She waved me off. “Don’t worry, Kaden explained everything. I am just glad that you were able to sort out your differences.” She gave me an affectionate smile. “You might want to take a key when you’re leaving,I may not be home in the afternoon.”
I nodded and was about to leave when I realized that she might be able to help me. I stopped at the door and called out to her making her turn to me. “I wanted to ask you something and I can’t offer much explanation but you have to promise that it stays between us.”
“Of course, what is it?”
“Do you know how to break bonds?”
She froze and stared at me with her mouth wide open. She blinked twice as if testing to see if I were an apparition. “Do you want to break your bond with Kaden?”
I wanted to say no but if I did, I would need to explain the bond with Blake and I wasn’t ready to do that so I shrugged. I trusted Clara and I muttered a quick prayer that she didn’t tell Kaden about this because it was going to complicate things further.
“Amelia, if you’re upset with him then talk things out. Breaking your bond is a huge deal.”
“Do you know how to do it or not?” I asked not wanting to spend more time on the topic and she sighed.
“Why don’t we talk about this when you get back?”
“I’m not talking about it,” I wanted to make sure she understood. “You promised, Clara. You can choose not to help me but you promised.”
“Fine, I’ll see what I can find out.”
“Thank you.”
She grimaced like I had asked her to put her hand into a blender. I disappeared soonafter because I didn’t want to give her the chance to change her mind.
When I got to school, I felt like a weight had been taken off my shoulders. It felt relieving to know that I had taken the first step to getting Blake out of my life forever. I was proud of myself. Serena didn’t understand the sudden good mood but I assured her that everything was fine. She assumed it was because of Kaden but I didn’t bother correcting her.
The classes were extra-long especially because Lucy kept shooting me death glares. She never came to me directly but I felt her eyes on me everywhere I went. I was on edge the entire day because I was worried that she was going to attack meor do something to me. Excluding her,the attention I got fromother students was astounding and it made me uncomfortable.
By lunch, I didn’t want to go to the café because I knew people were going to walk up to me. As soon as I mentioned it to Serena, she smiled and told me that she had the perfect place. We went out through the back door because we didn’t want other students knowing where we were going. I followed her and we came to a small restaurant.
It was practically emptywith tiny potted plants all over and it smelled like cookies and coffee. I would have expected that somewhere like this would have more customers. It seemed like the kind of place I would like to visit.
“Welcome to my hidden gem,” she waved her hands around. “No one really knows about this place.”
“How come? It looks amazing. How did you find it?”
“My parents own it,” she said casually and I turned to her. “People prefer to frequent the more popular places but there’s no better food than home cooked food.Come, let’s go meet my family.”
Her parents were kind and they didn’t treat me like anything other than their daughter’s friend. They gave us free food and it was amazing. I made a mental note to tell Kaden about it so theycould have better business- they deserved it.
When we were done eating, I realized we were a little late so Serena suggested that we cut through the forest. I didn’t want to because I had this nagging feeling but Serena reminded me thatwe had a veryimportant test that we couldn’t afford to be late for. She assured me that the walk was less than ten minutes long soI agreed.
We were walking when I started to get the feeling that we were watched. The hair at the back of my neck stood on end and I got a cold feeling that washed over me. Serena was talking so I slapped my hand over my mouth.
“What the-” she began but I shot her a hard look and she went silent.
“How far are we from the school?” I whispered and she held up four fingers.“I think we are being followed. When I tell you to, you need to run.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“I have training and you don’t. Get to school and get Kaden or Caleb, alright?”She nodded and I sighted a pair of eyes between the trees. “Run, now.”
She took off while I turned to face the person. I honestly thought it was one lone rogue but mybravado dropped when three other people walked out of the woods with him.
“That was either very brave or very stupid,” the one I assumed was the leader spoke.
As he advanced towards me, I tried to reach Kaden but his wall was down so I pleaded with my wolf to get to his. I hoped he would be able to get to me in time.
“Are you trying tocall for help?” he cooed in a mocking tone. “You can call whoever you want sweetheart but we will be out of here before they arrive. Do you want to test it out?”
“Go to hell,” I spat then I turned on my heels and ran.
I heard him chuckle. “Oh, I love a chase.”
