AMELIA’S P.O.V

I was anxious for my day at school. I could already imagine the rumors going around in the rumor mill and I was terrified. A part of me still wasn’t sure ifI was allowed to talk about my relationship with Kaden or not. I knew he took me out for lunch but it was in a private location. I was in uncharted territory and I had no idea how to proceed.

“Everything will be fine,” Clara told me when she saw me stressing in my room.

I called her in to help with my hair. I was hoping that nobody had seen us during dinner but just in case, I wanted to make sure I looked good. If I was seeing the Alpha then I needed to be presentable enough and worthy to be on his arm. I picked my prettiest top and paired it with skin tight jeans and my hair was curled then styled back.

Clara dropped me off and I was in a very good mood when I got to school because I felt pretty but the moment I stepped out of the car and the whispers began, I felt uneasy.I wanted to rush back into the car but Clara was gone and it felt like I was standing completely exposed in an open field with predators. I didn’t know if I could deal with it on a daily basis.

I was rooted to the spot and I had no idea how to proceed. I felt a hand on my elbow andI struck without looking. Thankfully, Serena was able to avoid being hit as she yelped and jumped out of the way. I placed a hand on my chest to calm myself down.

“Are you okay?” I asked and she nodded. “I am so sorry that I almost hit you. I didn’t know who you were and I felt very uncomfortable.”

“I can imagine considering everyone is staring and talking about you. I suppose that is what you get when you are seeing the Alpha. Are you dating or just fucking?” my mouth went open at her crude words and she scoffed. “What did you expect, Amelia? You were photographed with the Alpha. That is a big deal.”

She hooked her hand in my elbow and pulled me into the building. With her by my side, I didn’t really mind the whispers and pointing. Serena acted like my personalshield and whenever someone came too close, she wasquick to give them pointed glares that had them scurrying away.

I had hoped that the hype would die down by my free period but I was wrong because it only got worse. I had barely sat down at the table when a girl came up to me. She had hair the color of an orange with bright blue eyes. She looked like a nice girl but her smile was too eager. I recognized her from a class that we shared but I didn’t know her name and I didn’t think she knew mine.

“Hi, Amelia,” she completely ignored Serena as she spoke to me. “I think you look amazing today. Where did you get your top?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know, my friend bought it for me.”

She laughed really loud and I glanced at Serena in confusion. Serena just shrugged. I turned back to the girl who was now smiling widely.

“I know you are really busy but I was wondering if you wanted to be friends. I live around you and I was wondering if the Beta could give me a ride home too.”

“Leave, bitch,” Serena’s voice was harsh and the girl frowned before she left. Serena turned to me. “You’re with the Alpha, everyone thinks they can get an opportunity by being friends with you.”

I hoped that would be the end of it but I was wrong because the next thing I knew, hands were slammed on the table in front of me. I looked up to see Lucy. She didn’t look as put together as she usually would and her eyes held unbridled anger and hatred as she stared down at me. If looks could kill, I would have been six feet under and I wasterrified.

“You man stealing whore,” she spat loud enough for the entire café to hear. “What the hell is your problem? You just couldn’t bear to see me happy could you? You had him kick me out so that you could move in.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I kept my voice soft and quiet. “I am sorry that Kaden kicked you out but I have nothing to do with it.”

She laughed humorlessly. “You are on a first name basis with him now. I bet you feel so special, don’t you?” I opened my mouth to speak but before I could process it, she slapped me across the cheek.

I registered the pain before I even realized what was happening and she was smirking. Serena started to rise but I held out a hand to stop her. I didn’t need her to fight my battles for me. It was about time that I started defending myself. I stood to my feet and looked her square in the eye.

“Don’t ever hit me again,” I told her and I could tell she was shocked that I spoke back to her. “If you have a problem then pick it up with Kaden. I want no part in your childish fights.”

She grittedher teeth in annoyance. “Just know that you are nothing but a consolation prize to fuck. He will never want you and he will never love you.”

Her words hurt but I tried to keep my face impassive so she wouldn’t realize just how much. I watched as she disappeared and as soon as she slammed the doors, the whispers began. The eyes on me and the voices were getting too much and I didn’t even realize when Serena grabbed my arm and pulled me out.

“You did good,” she assured me. ‘You stood up for yourself and that is what matters.”

“She will come back.”

“We will be ready when she does.”

She didn’t bother me for the rest of the day but I caught her glaring daggers at me. I was on edge wondering what she was going to do but to my shock, she stayed away. By the end of the day whenCalebcame to pick me up, she shot me a distasteful look and stormed off towards her own car which was a beautiful black Ferrari.

“Is everything okay?” Calebasked when I got to the car and I nodded. He didn’t believe me and it was obvious but I didn’t care. “If you want to lie to Kaden like that then I suggest you get a little believable.”

“I’m not lying,” I lied and he raised a brow. I turned to him and his eyes darkened for a second.

“What happened to you?” he reached out for me and before I could stop him, he ran his hand down the side of my face where Lucy had slapped me. She had nicked me with her nails and it was yet to heal.

“I walked into a wall,” it sounded stupid even to my ears and he raised a brow. Instead of arguing, I took my hair out of its tie to cover that spot. “Is this better?’

“You better hope that Kaden doesn’t see that.”

I could tell that Caleb wanted to push more but he decided not to. It took five minutes of driving to realize that we were going towards the office and not the house. As we walked towards the doors, I was handed a card. I turned it over and right there was my name and picture with the words ‘all access’.

“Is this for real?” I asked and Caleb nodded.

“You have Kaden to thank for that. He is in his office, you should go to him. He can give the introductions better.”

Caleb’s voice had the hint of a tease in it. I couldn’t help but smile as I made my way towards his office. His secretary was there and she smiled and ushered me in when she saw me. I knocked and waited for a response but when I didn’t get one, I pushed the door open.

“I said I didn’t want to-” he trailed off when he realized it was me. “Amelia, come in. I thought it would take another ten minutes. Did you get your card?” I nodded and he rose to his feet. “Let me show you around and show you what you will be doing.”

“I thought there weren’t any openings here.”

“There is now,” he held out his hand for me and I gingerly took it. As we began walking, he suddenlyturned to me. “I never asked about your day, how was it?’

I wanted to tell him about Lucy but I didn’t want to spoil the mood so I shrugged. “It was good, I guess.”

He stopped and levelled me with a look. “You will tell me if something is wrong again, won’t you?”

I nodded despite how harsh the lie tasted on my tongue. “I will, now can we see the office?”

Kaden led me around and I realized that the office was larger than I thought. As we walked, I kept wondering when Lucy was going to show up but she never did.The question plagued me and the only reason I didn’t ask was because I was trying not to think about her. Kaden told me about everything I needed to do which included type his documents, deliver them to him and ensure that his schedule was never choked up. It seemed relatively easy.

By the time we were done with the tour, Kaden must have noticed that I wasn’t really paying attention because he led me back to his office and locked the door. He walked us over to his chair and took a seat before pulling me into his lap.

“Are you okay?” he asked and I nodded. He placed a soft kiss at the top of my head and pulled me into his chest. “You don’t look okay. I heard about the pictures that got out. Is this what it is about? I can have it erased from the internet. We don’t have to go public until you want.”

“That isn’t it, I just had a long day.”

He cursed. “I should have thought about that. I can have someone bring in some food for us. You don’t have to start work today. We can just spend it together.”

“Kaden, you don’t have to.”

“I want to take care of you,” he dropped his voice to a whisper. “Please let me, won’t you?”

I bit my lip and hesitated before nodding.
