AMELIA’S P.O.V

I was sitting in Kaden’s office when someone knocked. I knew it wasn’t Kaden because he wouldn’t have needed to knock on his own office so I stayed silent hoping whoever it was would leave. The knocking ceased and I thought everything was fine until there was some shuffling and the door creaked open revealing Blake. He had two bobby pins in the key hole that he used to pick the lock and he had a crazed look in his eyes as he pulled them out and walked into the room.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I told him as he moved further into the room. “You need to leave.”

“I couldn’t leave without seeing you. I knew you would be here. Do you know how hard it was to get your father to take me instead of Brittany? I had to convince him that as his future son-in-law I needed to be present for these kind of meetings.”

I winced as his words hit me square in the chest. He was still with Brittany. Despite everything that happened and everything he knew they had done to me, he was still with her. He seemed to realize the impact of his words because he reached out for me but I took a step back. I didn’t want him touching me especially not after what he just said.

“You know I don’t have a choice,” he murmured. “If I leave her, she will know it is because of you. She will know that you’re here. I am trying to keep you safe.”

“Then why are you here?” I whisper yelled. “If you came with my father, didn’t you think that he would realize your absence. How did you even know I would be here and not at the house?”

“I knew he would never leave you alone. After what happened the last time I knew he was too obsessive and he would try to keep you as close to him as possible. It was a calculated risk and it paid off because you’re here,” he reached out to cup my cheek but I slapped his hand away. “Come on, Amelia, I missed you. Please just let me hold you.”

“Blake you need to go. They will notice your absence and they will come looking. You will lead everyone straight to me. I’m sorry if I misled you but I want nothing to do with you.”

As much as I wanted to mean those words, I didn’t. A part of me was still drawn to Kaden no matter how much I tried to fight it. A part of me still missed him and would always love him as my first love. Sometimes I wished things were easy, I wished I could pick and choose how I felt but I couldn’t. I couldn’t control my emotions any more than I could control Blake’s or Kaden’s.

I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t know Blake had started to move forward until he was pressed up against me. I took a hesitant step back and my back hit the table. He was too close and he was trying to come closer so I held out a hand to keep him at bay. I could see that he hated that due to the way he clenched his jaw but I couldn’t bring myself to care.

“Are you saying that you didn’t feel anything when you got my letters?” he asked.

“I did not.”

“If you didn’t then you would have responded to tell me off. You should have responded.”

“Please, leave.”

“You didn’t respond to my letters,” he spoke in an accusing tone. “Why are you hiding from me, Amelia?”

“You need to leave,” I whispered harshly scared that someone would walk in at any moment and see us. “Kaden will be here soon and he is going to kill you.”

“Kaden, are you on first name basis with him now? What happened to Alpha? Isn’t he your Alpha? Are you fucking him?”

“You have no right to say that to me. I need you to leave, Blake, now.”

“Not until you answer me.”

He leaned forward as if to kiss me and everything happened so fast that I barely had time to process it. One second, he was leaning towards me and the next, Kaden was bursting through the doors. Blake had enough self preservation to take a step back and move away from me. I could see the death and murder in Kaden’s eyes so I did the first thing I could think of and I leaped into his path to plead with him.

I knew he hated that I was pleading for Blake but I couldn’t think about any of that. Once Blake had successfully left, I let out a sigh of relief thinking that everything was going to be fine until Kaden started acting weird. It only took me a few minutes to realize he was jealous and I tried to diffuse the situation but nothing I did seemed to be working. At the end, I got annoyed and I stormed out of the room.

Caleb was waiting for me at the foot of the stairs and I could tell that he had a lot of questions but I was not in the mood to answer any of them. We drove home in silence and as soon as the car turned off, I stormed out slamming the door for extra effect. I knew Caleb was not the reason for my anger, but I couldn’t stop myself. I made a mental note to apologize later.

When I got into the house, Clara noticed my mood and she instantly rushed after me. I tried to shut her out of my room but she was quick to shove her foot into the gap to stop me. She refused to be pushed away and after a minute of trying and failing to move her out of the gap, I relented and let her in.

“What happened?” she asked and I told her everything. By the time I was done with the story, she let out a sigh. “Kaden is jealous but do you blame him?”

“What are you talking about?”

“He met you kissing the guy and now the guy was alone with you. He may not be pissed about that but he would definitely be pissed that you were trying to defend him.”

“Would you have preferred that I let him kill Blake?” I asked. “I was doing what I thought was right. If Blake died, my father would have realized that I was here. I acted out of self preservation.”

“I know that but he doesn’t.”

“He could have asked or even tried to listen to me. He just pushed me out like I wasn’t important. Who does that?” she opened her mouth to speak but closed it immediately. In that moment, I knew that she was on Kaden’s side. “I think you should leave.”

“Amelia,” she reached out to me but I brushed her hand away.

“I don’t want to talk about this right now, much less with you. I just want to be left alone.”

I could tell she didn’t agree with my decision but she sighed and turned on her heels. Once she had shut the door behind her, I let out a scream of frustration and buried my face into my pillow. I guessed she would take Kaden’s side but I never knew it would be so obvious.

I had never felt so alone before that moment and I began wondering if I even made the right choice. I was so frustrated and exhausted from the day’s events that I drifted off to sleep.

I woke up to frantic knocking on my door. I snapped awake instantly and rushed over to pull it open. It was dark outside and when I glanced at the clock, it read 8 p.m. I knew it had to be Clara or someone in the family but I couldn’t understand why they would be knocking that way at my door. When I pulled it open, Caleb was standing there and he looked worried.

“We need to leave, now,” he grabbed my arm and began to pull me towards the front door but I dug my heels into the carpet to keep my position.

“What is going on? I was sleeping. Is everything okay? Is someone dying?”

“It’s Kaden,” he said and the remnants of sleep disappeared from my eyes. “I cannot tell you what exactly is happening because I don’t know what exactly is happening but what I can tell you is that he had a huge fight with Lucy and he threw her out of his house. She came to the office in tears and I tried to go to his place but he won’t see me. He is a mess and you’re the only person who can calm him down.”

My heart clenched and I wanted to see him but I shook my head. “He asked me to leave earlier. I am the last person he wants to see.”

“That’s a lie and you know it,” Caleb cut me off. “Look, we can go to see him and if he refuses to see you then we leave but I am not willing to leave him like that in that state. The last time I saw him this destructive was a long time ago. Please, Amelia.”

I had never hard Caleb beg before so I nodded. He seemed genuinely worried for Kaden and I figured that the situation had to be terrible. He high tailed it to Kaden’s house. I was sure he was breaking all the traffic rules with how hard he was pressing on the accelerator. I had to hold onto the door and armrest for dear life and I muttered a prayer to the moon goddess so I wouldn’t die in the car.

As soon as the car came to a stop, I let out a sigh of relief. Kaden’s house was a massive two story building. It was modern and chic which long glass windows that were one-way mirrors and a large garden in front. Caleb led me over to the front door and he knocked on it.

“Kaden, it’s me,” he began and there was silence followed by the smashing of something against the door. I jumped in fright but Caleb wrapped an arm around my shoulder to keep me from bolting. “You try, he might listen to you.”

I knocked on the door and spoke in the softest voice I could muster. “Kaden, can you open the door for me, please?”

There was silence and I braced myself for the smashing sound but it never came. I glanced at Caleb and he ushered me to try the door. I turned the knob and to my shock, the door was open.

“Why didn’t you just go in?” I asked. “Surely if the door was open then you could have walked in.”

“That glass that shattered was a warning. If I had gone in then he would have killed me. He wants you there.”

I exhaled deeply and pushed the door open. The front was littered with glass and I crossed the threshold while trying to avoid it. Caleb started to cross when a growl cut through the air.

“Just her,” I couldn’t see Kaden but we heard him. Caleb shot me a sympathetic look and walked away while mouthing good luck. I wanted to follow him but I felt Kaden’s presence behind me like a raging force. “Close the door.”
