Jane's POV

The next day. My phone rang aloud and it disrupted my deep sleep. I forced my eyes open and had to pick up the call without looking at the face of the phone.

'Hello, who is this? And what is the problem?" I snapped with my dull, cracked voice.

'This is the police and we bring you unfortunate news. Your cousin's corpse was found in our cell this morning." He revealed.

My lips trembled in shock as he hung the call. I was feeling sleepy earlier but my eyes brightened at the news. I stared at the wall with disbelief and as the news sank in, I decided to check my phone.

Maybe, it's just a bad dream. I checked my phone again only to find the number of the police officer as the person who called last this morning.

My heart started racing fast against my chest. ‘How could this be?' Even though Ray wasn't a good person to me. Even though he had tried to take me down. But he is my blood and doesn't deserve to die.

Without further ado, I crawled out of my bed and put on my clothes. I rushed out of my house shabbily.

When my driver saw me, he was quite shocked by the manner in which I was dressed. 'You can't go out like this. You don't look good at all." He spoke with concern when he saw I was aiming for the car.

'Take me to the police station. My cousin is dead!" My voice rang out in pain and desperation to be at the police station.

Upon hearing the news, the heart of my driver fled at once. He jumped into the car and started the engine. I sat back as he accelerated.

The base of my eyes was laced with tears. The memories I had with my cousin when I was young played in my head.

Car screeched audibly when he marched the break. That distracted me from my sad moments.

'Why did you break like that?" I asked with concern while my face shrank and my eyes bulged.

'I am very sorry, ma." He apologized to me.

'Be very careful next time." After my words, he continued driving and after a few moments, we arrived at the police station.

I stepped down from my car while disappointment was written all over my place. I walked into the station and my eyes glinted across all the officers. An officer approached when he set his eyes on me.

'You welcome, ma." He greeted calmly. But I was agitated by his response. 'What happened to Ray? I want to hear it again." My voice was fierce as I peered into his eyes.

He gulped in the saliva in his mouth In fear. 'You have to calm down, ma. We don't know how it happened. We found him dead in the cell." He explained.

I shot a deadly glare at him with nonsense he was spouting out of his mouth. 'What are you saying officer? The police station is supposed to be a place of protection. If you can't protect a prisoner, is it the society you will protect?" I raised my voice and it disturbed the police station that everyone's attention was called.

'We are very sorry about your loss, ma. Upon check, we discovered that Mr Ray didn't die a natural death. He was poisoned to death." He explained.

'I don't have the strength to digest the entire news now. I just lost my cousin and all I want now is to see his corpse." I grinded my teeth against the other while I looked at his face soberly.

'You will have to follow me to the forensic department. That where autopsy was been carried out on him and his body has not been moved from the place." He detailed.

'Okay. Take me there right away."

The police officer led the way, while I followed him from behind. It took a few minutes before we finally arrived at the autopsy department.

The police showed the security his Identity card and he was granted access inside. I followed him until we reached the corpse.

'That is the body of your cousin." The police officer said while he stood aside. I moved swiftly towards his corpse and removed the cloth used to cover his face.

'Ray!" Tears laced down my eyes. 'I know I don't like your ways. But I never wished you dead. Who on earth could have killed you?" I held his cold hand and continued to cry.

After crying, I was about to cover his face with the cloth until I spotted an inscription on his chest.

It reads, 'Go to hell!"

‘This must have been done by his killers. What has Ray gotten himself in? Who did he offend?" These questions that hung in the air that I needed an urgent answer to.

‘Since a criminal could slip into the cell to kill. The police might be very much involved in his death.' As that thought uncovered itself in my head. I felt very guilty.

If I hadn't sent him to prison, he wouldn't be dead by now. As that echoed in my head, a memory flashed my mind.

‘Who was Ray in contact with on his phone when he was helping me secure my system. That person might have a hand in this.' I grunted with displeasure and closed his face with the cloth.

I lifted myself and cleaned my eyes. 'Officer, since Ray is dead and I am his family. I want to have his properties that are in your possession." I said to him.

'There is no problem. You will have them before you leave here." He emphasized.

I heaved out a breath of calmness as the both of us walked back.

'Please, stay here. I will go get his possessions."

'Okay." I waited at that position for the officer to return. After ten minutes of waiting, the officer wasn't back.

‘What's happening? Why is the officer not back already?' I thought In my head while I became very vigilant.

A few minutes more and the officer walked out of his superiors office with Rays belongings. My troubled heart calmed.

'Who took you so long?" I challenged him.

'I am sorry for the delay. This is his belongings." He handed it over to me.

I collected it and the officer turned to leave. I decided to scheme through them and after checking through, two things were missing. ‘Rays wallet and phone.' I lifted my eyes to see the officer pacing forward.

'Officer!" I called out his name. And he halted with tension visible on his body.
