I never expected to see Sansa again. She showed up at my door sobbing, falling to her knees, begging me to call Luca off.
I was confused and wanted nothing more to do with her.
When I asked Luca about it, he explained that Ivan's parents suspected his "accident" years ago wasn't accidental at all. They'd hired Luca to investigate.
But why was Sansa so panicked?
Could she have been involved in Ivan's death?
I didn't want to consider it. Even in a terrible relationship, who would harm their child's father?
"Because Danny isn't Ivan's biological son."
Luca answered my unspoken question casually.
"That's all we've confirmed so far. We don't have other leads yet, but she's definitely involved."
Ivan had done a paternity test the week before his accident. The timing was too convenient.
I remembered how Sansa had tried to prevent doctors from saving Ivan after the crash, claiming she "didn't want him to suffer." Now everything made sense.
A chill ran down my spine. I never imagined she could be so calculating.
A few days later, Sansa was taken in for questioning—sooner than I'd expected.
Danny, with no guardian, was placed in temporary foster care.
I saw Vince again at Parent-Child Activity Day after school started.
He'd lost weight and looked defeated.
When he saw me, he hesitated, as if wanting to speak.
In the end, he only said:
"I'm sorry."
I gave him a small smile before turning to watch Elise playing with his classmates, my heart swelling with love.
After the activity, Luca picked us up. On the drive home, Elise chattered nonstop.
With Luca in his life, Elise had become increasingly lively and playful.
"Mom, can Uncle Luca come to the parent-child activity next time?"
Elise's question made my heart skip.
"Why? Isn't Dad good enough?"
"I think Uncle Luca is better."
"Great! No problem, buddy!"
Just as I struggled for an answer, Luca jumped in with a smile.
He took my hand with his free one and placed a gentle kiss on my palm.
I gazed out at the sunset. Vince's apology had stirred nothing in my heart.
Luca's gentle care had already begun healing me, showing me something more important.
Our future. Luca and I exchanged smiles.
