There was a sharp rap on the door, breaking the still morning silence. With a wince trailing from her mouth, Sarah heaved herself from the couch, her stomach rebelling to the action. As she arrived at the door, she glanced through the spyhole and saw the familiar smile on Didi's face.

"Didi!" With a flood of relief washing over her, Sarah exclaimed. The weight of growing twins was beginning to show, and these days even the most routine chores felt like an Everest climb.

With a vibrant cotton tote bag draped over her shoulder, Didi entered the room. "Good morning, sleepy mama! Guess who's here to help?" she chirped, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

Sarah chuckled, leaning against the doorframe. "Help with what? Another round of insatiable morning cravings?"

Didi grinned. "Actually, something more productive," she announced, holding up the bag. "Operation Twin Takeover begins now! We're conquering the mall for baby supplies."

Sarah's eyes widened. "The mall? Are you sure? I wouldn't want to hold you up…"

Didi scoffed. "Nonsense! Consider it a field trip for a very important soon-to-be aunt. Besides, you need a break from these four walls."

Sarah conceded with a smile. The thought of fresh air and a distraction from the nesting instinct that had taken over her apartment was enticing.

The peaceful sanctuary Sarah had built at home was a long cry from the busy mixture of loud music and swarming crowds that was the mall. Didi manoeuvred through the crowds with ease, guiding Sarah past shops filled with cribs, baby gear, and brightly colored toys.

Sarah was excited to be surrounded by little onesies and tiny plush animals. It was finally happening: two tiny lives were going to be born. She lifted up a pair of ridiculously small but incredibly cute tiny socks.

"Imagine two sets of these tiny feet kicking around," Sarah mused, a smile blooming on her face.

Didi bumped her shoulder playfully. "Get ready for double the trouble, double the love, and double the cuteness overload."

As they piled their chosen items into a shopping cart, Sarah's smile faltered slightly. A pang of loneliness for her family, a family torn apart by distance and circumstance, pricked at her.

Sensing the shift in Sarah's mood, Didi squeezed her hand. "Hey, what is it?"

Sarah took a deep breath. "I was just thinking…about my sister, Olivia. We were…really close back in the day."

The mention of Olivia brought back a flood of memories – playing dress-up in their childhood bedroom, whispering secrets under the covers, the never-ending support they had offered each other through life's ups and downs.

"How is she?" Didi asked gently.

"I haven't spoken to her for months," Sarah admitted, her voice thick with emotion. "Everything happened so fast when I left Bobby. I didn't want to put her at risk, or have Bobby use her against me."

Didi placed a comforting hand on Sarah's shoulder. "That makes sense, Sarah. But you miss her, don't you?"

Sarah nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "More than words can say. We were always there for each other."

Didi gave her a squeeze. "Maybe…when everything settles down, when the babies are here, you can try reaching out to her. Explain everything. Maybe she'll understand."

Sarah considered this, a glimmer of hope flickering within her. Perhaps someday, when her new life felt established, she could reach out to Olivia. The thought of reconnecting with her sister brought a warmth to her heart that had been missing for far too long.

They finished their shopping spree, returning to Sarah's apartment laden with bags. The afternoon was spent transforming a small bedroom into a haven for the twins. Sarah climbed onto a stepladder, a paintbrush clutched in her hand, while Didi taped plastic sheets over the furniture.

"So," Didi began, her voice echoing in the room, "tell me more about this Olivia."

Sarah started telling stories while she worked on painting a gentle blue stripe across the wall. Stories of their early adventures, Olivia's steadfast devotion, and their enduring relationship over distance. A sense of belonging, a longing for a lost part of her life, seemed to flood the room as she spoke, beyond the paint.

Didi listened carefully and offered words of support and encouragement. When they were done painting, the space appeared airy and friendly, prepared for the twins' arrival. More significantly, though, Sarah experienced a relief of weight in her chest. It had been simple to share her recollections of Olivia, to take a step toward healing the unseen ties that bound them together.

As Sarah looked around the transformed room, a wave of gratitude washed over her. She had Didi, a loyal friend by her side, and soon, two precious babies on the way. And perhaps, someday, she might even have her sister back in her life. The future, once uncertain, now shimmered with possibility.

The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of activity. Didi became Sarah's constant companion, helping her sort through baby clothes, assembling cribs, and even teaching her a few basic nursery rhymes in preparation for bedtime stories. Sarah, her belly growing rounder with each passing day, found immense comfort in Didi's unwavering support.

The hours slipped by in a blur as they worked tirelessly, fueled by their shared excitement and determination. By the time the sun began to dip below the horizon, the nursery was transformed. Soft blue walls enveloped the room, while plush blankets and stuffed animals added a cozy touch to the crib and rocking chair.

As they stepped back to admire their handiwork, a sense of satisfaction washed over them. The room was more than just a nursery; it was a symbol of hope and new beginnings. And as Sarah gazed around the space, she couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude for the friend who had stood by her side through it all.

Turning to Didi, Sarah wrapped her in a tight embrace, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "For everything."

Didi returned the hug with equal fervor, her own eyes shimmering with tears. "Anytime, Sarah," she replied, her voice filled with warmth. "I'm so grateful to be a part of this journey with you."

One evening, as they sat on the living room floor surrounded by a mountain of freshly washed baby clothes, Sarah reached for a dusty photo album tucked away on a bookshelf. With a sigh, she flipped through the faded pictures, a smile gracing her lips as she landed on a photo of two young girls, their arms wrapped around each other, beaming at the camera.

"That's Olivia and me," Sarah said, handing the photo to Didi.

Didi's eyes softened as she studied the picture. "You two look so happy," she remarked.

"We were," Sarah confirmed, her voice laced with a hint of nostalgia. "We were inseparable. We told each other everything, promised we'd always be there for each other."

Didi squeezed Sarah's hand gently. "It sounds like a beautiful bond."

Sarah nodded, a single tear tracing a path down her cheek. "I miss her so much, Didi. More than I can even express."

Didi knew this silence needed breaking. "Have you thought about reaching out to her?" she asked, her voice gentle yet firm.

Sarah hesitated, a flicker of fear crossing her features. "What if she doesn't understand? What if Bobby…" she trailed off, the weight of her past threatening to engulf her.

Didi reached for a tissue, wiping away the tear that escaped Sarah's eye. "You can't control her reaction, Sarah, but you owe it to yourself, and to your relationship, to try. Explain your situation, the abuse you endured, why you had to leave. Olivia is your sister, your family. Maybe, just maybe, she'll understand."

Sarah pondered this, a flicker of hope igniting within her. The thought of reconnecting with Olivia, of rebuilding their bond, was a powerful motivator.

"Maybe you're right," Sarah admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "Maybe it's worth a try."

Didi beamed. "Absolutely! Let's write her a letter. You can tell your story, explain why you haven't been in touch, and express your desire to reconnect."

Sarah's heart fluttered with both excitement and apprehension. The idea of reconnecting with her sister after so many months apart filled her with a sense of longing she hadn't felt in a long time.

But as they sat down with pen and paper, ready to pour out Sarah's heart onto the page, a sudden wave of fear washed over her. What if Bobby somehow intercepted the letter? What if he traced it back to her new apartment, putting her and her unborn twins in danger?

"We can't risk it," Sarah said, her voice barely above a whisper as she set the pen down, her hands trembling slightly.

Didi looked at her with concern, understanding the weight of Sarah's words. "You're right," she said softly. "We need to find another way."

Sarah chewed her lip, her mind racing with possibilities. Then, a thought occurred to her. "I'll pay her a visit," she declared, her voice filled with determination. "After the babies are born, when I know they'll be safe here with me."

Didi nodded in agreement, a supportive smile playing on her lips. "That sounds like a plan," she said. "And in the meantime, we can focus on preparing for their arrival and keeping you and the babies safe."

Sarah gave Didi a deep hug, feeling relieved and appreciative of her constant support. Even though she didn't know what was ahead, she knew that with Didi by her side, she could overcome any obstacles.

Sarah's heart grew full of optimism for the future as they went back to folding baby clothes. Even though she and her sister were now apart, she believed that their relationship was unshakable and that they would eventually reconnect.
